When you say, "added pure water for a highlight" What exactly do you mean by this? Wet on wet scares me a little bit. I should just try it already.

I only recommend watercolor paper.
printer paper has no ability to handle watercolor, all wet paints will get absorbed inside the paper fiber, make it almost impossible to blend smoothly. It will get really wavy when applying streaky wash. and it can be torn if you scrub it too hard.
