Just joking. All in all I respect every kind of religion or spirituality. Except the extremists that try to oppress or even kill other believes. But in a 40k context, the Angry Marines (and pretty much the rest of the imperial "believers") would definitely deny the concept of "God" like some people praise him nowadays. The best example for this is the short story "The last church", where the Emperor talks to the last priest on Terra that runs the last "traditional christian"church. Great story btw...

But I look at my stuff just as childish attempts to draw, compared to some of the awesome people here on DA like Blazbaros, D1sarmon1a, eightball6219 and countless others that I watch and praise like a fanboy. Β
Anyway, I will try to improve over the time (I`m pretty new to digital painting, you know?)
And I love the fact that you and maybe somebody else out there sees something in it and likes it. Maybe it even spreads a small smile here and there. What more could I wish for?
BTW: I added you to my watch too. I love your paintjobs. They are on a level I will never reach. Especially your viking Astartes, the War Sons. We talked about them in the past, do you remember? first off, your stuff IS awesome. and the angry marines as subject matter lend themselves well to "basic" styles of artwork. secondly what do you use to make these, it's a really interesting medium. and finally thank you for the praise, my War Sons are a labor of love. i've been a warhammer fanatic for 20+ years and i finally said "screw it, i'm making my OWN chapter MY way". i don't play so i don't have to conform to any rules, just model and paint as i see fit. though because i am a Pagan, you will never see any of my models actually simulate the Gods so as not to offend them.

And my knowledge about northern mythology is pretty basic.

To your question: I use Gimp to paint my pics. It`s free (what is great, because I am sooo poor...) and I have the feeling that it is as powerfull and everything like Photoshop. And as simple to use and intuitive. Also it is as editable as PS when it comes to adding tools and effects and whatever you like.
1. When I do technical stuff like my Knight versions, I just collect the parts I want to use from here and there. (Like the legs in a dynamic way, then a body I want to use, a cool head.....) Then i put them together in the way I imagined, and convert whatever I want and add (like a custom weapon or head or pose...). When that basic structure (call it a sketch if you like) looks the way I like it, I lighten it up a little and do the linework on a new layer and then colour it on a separate layer. This process is done by other people by simply vectorizing it with Adobe Illustrator or other vector tools, but I figured out, that it looks too "perfect" then IMO. And if I wanted perfection, I could just photoshop everything, then turn it B/W and colour it. But where is the personal not if I would do that? Sometimes I colour with free patterns (metal, leather, glass, whatever...) that you find on the net or that I found myself but mostly I colour with simple colours. When everything looks good, I add shades, a background (sometimes) and finally highlights. Then a smoothening filter and everything looks good to me. I spare many other effects like auto lightening or shading or glowing or whatever. It never looks the way I want. Maybe I am too stupid to use it properly, but the positive effect is, that it contains more input from me instead of my computer.
2. The other way to do my pics is simply sketch it (digitally or by hand and then photograph it or scan it) and then do all the other steps I mentioned before.
You don`t need the newest hardware or whatever to do that simple childish stuff I do. Of course, when you want to do real awesome, professional stuff like some people here (not me), then some investments might be usefull to spare yourself ages of point and click adventures with your pics, but every painting tool out there contains a lining function that even spares you a graphic tablet. Yes, you can just use your mouse to simply set point A (where the line starts) and point B (where it ends) and the curve it the way you want. It takes much longer than simply draw it, but it is possible. So I would recommend you to buy a tab or something. It is simply faster.
Oh, and I maybe talk right now, like I am the smartest guy alive, but I`m pretty new when it comes to digital painting. My experience with that medium isn`t older than maybe 6 month or so. But I like it. It is sooo complex and there is so much to discover.
I will try to improve in the future. Everybody should try that with whatever he does.
