The original entry for this had no backgroundΒ fav.me/d927hgqIt was pretty simple and it shows clearly what happened. The background here is pretty simple, but I have to wonder if it really was worth the effort. Does it tell the story better? Does it enhance the scene? In any case I like the way it looks a bit more. I'm sure I probably could've composed it better to lead the eye towards Twilight.

Art, especially everyday moments like that, is always supposed to depict reality as closely as possible. If there would be no background, it would look like Sweetie Belle is flying a kite in a blue, empty void, which would make no sense whatsoever and be unrealistic, unless you would a provide a story for it how Sweetie Belle ended up in this void.
So, yes, the background enhances the scene. Everyday moments like that always need one to really shine.

I guess the thing I'm worried about is if the background adds flaws to the composition. If I had left the background neutral, the scene would've made sense to any passive viewer and they'd simply just imagine where it was happening.Β Adding a background means having to take responsibility for more things. What colors to use, where to place objects, and what those objects say about what's going on. It's a lot of work for potentially very little payoff.
But... I eventually want to get better at it so I might as well practice.
