How to Horror: Clothing, Colours and Designs

Introduction
So I've now been requested this topic twice now, so I think it's time I got up off my ass and do something productive~ Today I'll be talking on the vast topic, OC design. Now since this is such a huge topic I'm bound to miss some stuff and clearly this will be a long. Regardless, enjoy~

Things to consider
To make things easer I'm going to be splitting this whole tutorial into chunks. I'll be using a lot of hypothetical examples in this to, as well as some OCs.. just incase anyone wants to know~

Outfits:
Stating off with the largest topic, let's talk about clothing and outfits. Now I'm not going to really cover things like masks and other little details until a later chunk but I may touch on it here. The first thing to take into consideration when making an outfit for your charter is "when and where do they live?".
Say you have an OC who was born in Russia in the early 1900's, this is the first thing that came to mind so bear with me. When picking the clothing for this OC, make sure their outfit reflects the environment and time they live in. Case in point, if they come form a cold place, like Russia (though I'm told the summers in Russia are hot, but the winters are still cold as balls) the OC would probably wear very warm cloths, heavy fabrics and pretty bulky, not a crop top from you're local cheep clothing store. When making an OC make sure their clothing practically fits the style in the environment they live. If you have a rearly old OC who doesn't age they will probably still dress in more old fashioned cloths but modernised. This is basically where GraveYard went wrong with design wise, they didn't reflect their age, which undreamed the story of the charter as it became totally irrelevant.

Once you have the basic idear of what the charters cloths may look like, using the ideas you have related to the setting the charter fits into, the next thing to do is pick out the individual cloths. Now no-one, unless trained to do so after years of practise, can just come up with amazingly original ideas about new clothing and clothing designs no one's ever seen before.
Since it's used a lot, let's take the simple hoodie design, since its everywhere in horror charters (because it's a very variable piece of clothing that's practical). When you think up a hoodie you tend to come up with a normal looking design with either a zip down the front or a pocket, or both for those rearly crazy deigns. Now, that's not a lot of fun to look at since, as I've said above, it's pretty common. To make the item of clothing look more interesting go down to your local [generic clothing store] or to google and check out what deigns they have to offer. "Don't find an exact match for the charter?" Then just take the components you want and apply them to your deign. Also, adding your own logos, text and components, pretty much anything to break up the item of clothing you're using, will make it x1000 more fun to look at!! This idear can be applied to any outfit, dresses, trousers, hats, shirts, skirts, so on~

Last thing to mention with the items of clothing you're intending on using in your design is make sure they are practical. Ignoring colour at this point in time let's talk about the practically of clothing. If your charter is an athletic type give them clothing that's easy to move around in, louse and no heals please, but if your charter is the sexy type (yes, sexy and scary mix, grow up) then give them sexy clothing. If your charter lives in a cold place give them warm cloths, and ditto for if they live in a warm place; give them seasonal outfits that fit the charters personality, give them stuff that looks cool!!

Accessories

Another thing to consider when making an OC is the presents of accessories. Everything from the mask from scream to Jason Voorhees's hockey mask, then Freddy Krueger's gloves to the weird Marble Hornet body cameras, see below, charters are sometimes known by the kind of things they carry around with them. Case in point, even if you haven't seen the film, pretty much everyone knows of the iconic scream mask, because it's everywhere. Things like masks and accessories do go a long way into making a charter more memorable.

"But em!" I hear you cry from your respective homes and schools with internet, "How do we make cool looking masks and accessories no one else has ever used before!?" Well, my weird friend, this is a pretty big question for such a little bear to answer, but the answer is simple, google~ Based on you're charters background look at masks form the culture or time you're using and bass it off that. To make something totally original consider these things;

1. What is the mask made from? The marital of the mask will change the limitation the mask is subjected to. If it's made of wood or hard plastic it won't be able to be that big and will cover mostly the face only, materials like paper or latex allow a full head mask/helmet. In latex as well hair and other facial details can be worked in. Fabric and leather masks will stretch against the face, given a sunken look though can't be shaped.

2. What shape is the mask? There is no rule saying a mask has to be oval, cut chunks out to make a more elegant line, add bits on for spice, uncover the eyes, uncover the mouth, uncover the nose. Change shape form human to monster, remove chunks, disregard form, go wild.

3. How old is the mask? If the mask is old are their signs of ageing, blemishes, crashes and discolouration?

Before I move on though, remember that your OC doesn't have infinitely deep pockets and can't rearly be drawing around everything but the kitchen sink. If you give your OC custom items make sure that you don't give them to many and don't make them to large. Make sure all accessories are relevant to the charter.

Weapons?

Another topic I was asked to cover was weapons. In horror your charter doesn't need to carry around a weapon but if you rearly wanna give them one then be my guest. Now we all know that pretty much everyone and their mom seems to carry around a butchers knife these days, so how can we be original? Again differ cultures have different weapon styles and different professions will also used different knives, stakes, ect. Moving away form knives in general we can look a heavy weapons like maces, battons, or even just rocks as a method of crashing and breaking bones; other weapons of slitting and stabbing and chopping can be sickles, cleavers or falcon saw; projectile weapons can include darts, stars or gas cans. If all else fails, take a random screen shot of the below image and see what you get.

Morphology

So you've now got an idear of what you charter my wear but they just aren't creepy, well, why not mess with their form? Up until this point this tutorials been referring to humanoid charters and not monsters. We are lacking monsters in the horror industry. To give your OC a kick why give them some creepy attributes? Long thick arms, deformed legs, bulging eyes. I'll probably do a How To on monsters at some point but for now here is a thing to consider; giving your charter inhuman attributes like creepy eyes, mouths, limbs can make them more ascetically pleasing. Removing attributes to allow a vier to like them with people human will make them disturb and creepy. Dead lifeless eyes, mouths containing needle like teeth, so on.

Colours

Finally we get to talk about colour. It's been proven that colour will effect they way we interrupt things, reds and other hot colours will make us feel of danger while blue will emote feelings of safety. Red will make you act more compulsively while blue allows you to think long term. The Game Theory channel did a good video on this so check it out [link] . Having the whole charter be one colour isn't very interesting on the eye mind, so when picking out the colours for your charter make sure to vary what you use without making your OC a rainbow. Having mostly bland colours contracted by a little bit of brightness is most effective when it comes to colouring some charters but make sure the colours fit the kind of charter you're making. If the charter is bouncy and extrinsic they may work well with bright colours, but if they are stealthy and secretive, give them dark, dull colours.

How to apply

Trying to make your carter 100% original isn't going on work, you will find parallels. Take your ideas and run with them. Learn from others around you, but do not copy them to a T. Making a good design takes time, and I mean a lot o time. Don't worry if you still aren't happy after a week, a month, a year even, just keep refining your chatter and don't give in!!

What to avoid

Not much to putt here other than, don't blindly copy people. There is no formula for making an OC design, it's all relative.
