Description

Arlo watched silently as a strange blue glow emitted from the corner of his mother's eyes and the line of spots going down her side. He took a sip from his glass of water and finally Aster sighed, as if defeated. She opened her eyes and Arlo tipped his head at her, "What are you doing, Mama?"

"Dowsing."

"Wha?"

"It's magic." She sighed, "One of the abilities of basic water magic is being able to dowse water...to sense it." She cast a forlorn look at the water glass in her son's paws, "I can't seem to even sense your water very well, and you're only a few inches away from me."

Arlo blinked, "Is magic hard?"

"It can be..." Aster told him. She recalled not having too much trouble practicing her earth magic, though it took her a long time to even master the basics. Now, perhaps it was the pressure of deadlines and expectations, she found herself struggling a bit more with water magic. Dowsing so far was posing the most struggle to her, it felt like the faintest tingle but she found herself losing the sense as soon as it arrived.

She gave it another try, and Arlo curiously watched, wondering if he should be able to tell if it was working. Finally, Aster decided to call it a day and move on for now.

"Hey Mama?"

"Yes Arlo?"

"What's those weird spots on your side?" He pointed at the row of glands going down her flank, "They glow...?"

"Oh, those are..." Aster wasn't sure if she ever found out what they were supposed to be, just that they mysteriously showed up after her unfortunate accident...so far, despite how they seemed to be like extra magic glands, she didn't find they affected hers in any way, "Well...I'm not sure entirely...I remember they just suddenly appeared on me after an...incident."

Arlo blinked at her with those light purple eyes, and Aster figured she had to give up the whole story, "Well, this last fall, there was a horrible monster that came to the town. I got hurt trying to run away from it."

The wyngling's eyes widened, "M-monster?!"

Aster nodded, "But, but don't worry! It's gone forever now." she assured. Arlo still looked unnerved, and his eyes fell to her missing leg,

"Is...d-did the monster eat your leg and that's why you have to have a metal one?" he asked. Aster shook her head,

"Not...not quite. But yes, it was because of the monster I lost it. Anyways, those spots showed up when I woke up from the incident." Her eyes darkened, "Then I became very ill shortly after."

"O-oh..." Arlo's ears flattened, "D-did the spots make you sick...?"

Aster shook her head, "I'm not sure...though it seemed like everyone who had them mysteriously appear all got sick..." seeing her son look even more alarmed, she patted him comfortingly, "Don't worry though! We recovered just fine, as you can see!" She decided to omit the part about how massive the death count rose during that horrible time...

"O-oh...so...are those spots on you for...forever?"

"Forever? I'm...not sure, to be honest." Aster replied, "All I know is that they glow when I use magic. I believe they're harmless now."

"I won't get them...the spot disease...will I?" Arlo mumbled. Aster shook her head,

"No, some out-of-town wyngrew came and fixed that for us, I believe." she said, "They had to get rid of the broken Nova Tree."

"Oh..." Arlo said. He finished off his water, and then froze, looking back up at his mother, "I-I'm sorry Mama, did you want to try and dowz the water again?"

The purple wyngro shook her head, "No, that's alright." With a sigh, she pushed herself off the edge of the bed, staggering slightly as she leaned on her metal leg. Arlo placed the glass on the bedside table and hopped off the bed, following her out of the room.

"Hey Mama! Can I do magic too?" he asked, tipping his head back to look up at her,

Aster smiled down at him, "Not yet, you're too young to take classes."

"When I grow up though...can I do magic too? Just like you?"

Aster looked down at him, her smile faltering a bit as she looked upon the little Bright. No health scares yet...but...

She turned her smile into a grin and nodded, "Of course, if you really want to!" she told him.

Arlo smiled brightly.
