The peole in the background each seem to have at least one limb or part of a limb held in the same direction as the markings on the clock behind them... then whe I look closely even people in the foreground have parts pointing in the same direction as the main diagonals on the clock. It seems to help bind the whole composition together.

...though I'd prefer to have a bit more space on the left. Unfortunately, there are two standing figures there, which break the balance, so I have to to cut them away

Indeed, a little more space on the left side would improve the picture. But without that, photo is very consistent based on the skew, balanced lines.
