Description These are some initial designs for a little personal project I'm doing for fun. I guess after a while of working with game art it starts to rub off on you.

Then again when I was growing up I loved making characters for fighting games. Just moved into the MMO arena nowadays I guess! :] I dream of a game with the social aspects of a massively multiplayer game, the action/reaction based combat of a Monster Hunter title.. or maybe even God Eater, and the community building/sandboxishness of a Minecrafty/Terraria-ish title.

Can you guess the theme? Hint: It's pretty timely, considering the date..

Well, by the look of this, I think the theme is halloween: the werewolf, the crazy scientist, the frankenstein guy, the ghost and the zombie. Oh, and also the mummy and the strange monster.

Very awesome. It took a double-take to understand fully what a couple were, but in a positive way! The subtle vampiricness of the lower-right mistress is sweet, to say the least, and the mummy (mummess?) in the center is awesome. I personally favor the little mercreature, though.

Thanks! Yeah, I realize that with some it's not entirely clear, particularly the Vampire(ss). I hope to make some full color portraits of these folks later on, with like.. moves and stuff, which'll probably put them in a more focused light, mythos-wise. Thanks for looking. :]

My faves are the lil' fishy and the Egyptian priestess. You should post up to tell us what the class names are~ If I had to gueeeesss I'd say:
Zombie, Mad Scientist, Frankenstein's Monster, (the fishy one's hard - something from Lovecraft??), Ghost, Voodoo priestess/Necromancer, Werewolf and Vampire/Vampire Hunter?

Hmmm... I'm going to go for the guessing. Definitely a dark fantasy theme. As for these characters' classes? Go go go.

Warrior, Alchemist, some sort of Golem, no clue on the prawn, oracle, no idea on glowing eyes @D, summoner/werewolf?, and a priest?

...ahaha, I don't know if these are actually classes or not, but having just gotten into Pathfinder I'm all *devours possibilities*

Yeah, it's a shame MMOs is an area of gaming that seems to be pretty... stuck? At least I've noticed an overwhelming amount of World of Warcraft/Guild Wars/Eve Online clones. It's just like a lot of these games lack soul or spirit beneath the pretty models, especially the Asian variants for some reason.

I'm putting a decent amount of faith into Guild Wars 2, I hope they certainly are able to shake things up a bit.

I think one of the most important things to introduce would be an alternate style of combat. The click and fight, then wait for cooldowns thing is.. well. Eh. That's why I say Monster Hunter in terms of combat, it feels so much more immersive. But that's just a personal taste. :]

I'm cautious about Guild Wars 2. I like that they try to play around with the storytelling department, but mixing nonlinearity with pacing/buildup to make boss fights etc feel epic sounds like a tough task. Otherwise it seems like they "just" do some extensive polishing of the core gameplay, which is totally since they're doing a sequel, but I personally would like to see exactly that gameplay change.

While also agree with your gameplay taste, I think the "locking on the enemy, then chaining combos and waiting for cooldowns while autoattacking" gameplay has its advantages and disadvantages.

It was a good choice for Warcraft 3 because it let you focus on micromanagement and the rest of your units. In theory it gives you a breather so you can focus on tactics. In the real game however, there's (often) exactly one correct skill tree and exactly one correct combo per situation or you're being inefficient, so the most dynamic part of the gameplay becomes target selection and the distance between play and target. Heck, sometimes you can be as skillful as you want, without the correct gear, you're toast.
League of Legends is an excellent example for this. Then again Warcraft 3 are its roots.

I think you're on a good path and believe core gameplay is more fun the more control the player has and the more dynamic the game is (be it on a gameplay or storytelling level). Not always easy to program, but sometimes there just seem to be invisible barriers I can't understand.
I've yet to play an RPG where I can aim my spells and get a responding damage model (and be it just that a fireball to the head causes critical damage instead of equipping special gear) or any game with dialogue where I have Source-like voice options always available. I mean there are players in TF2 having small conversations only using voicelines from the menus, why can't someone expand on that concept?

Sorry, enough with the rambling. It's just so sad that there's tons of unused ideas out there and people either lack resources to experiment with them or they want to secure their resources and hiss at risky experiments like they're poison.

Briefly! Back at the old studio I did some occasional doodles in Imageready and animated them like, flipbook style, but I don't really have the capacity (or patience) to animate at *Unknown-person levels of fantastic.

Interesting, I can see these more for a fighting came, but maybe not the sandboxish. I've seen Doofus add a bit of combustibility to their MMO, letting people buy houses and create them, and so fort, but I'm guessing you're going for something a bit more... Though, an interesting concept! I do hope you continue on with this idea.
also, will the 'classes' be unisex? I know a lot of people complain in an MMO if a class or race is one-gender.

Not a sandbox game, an MMO with sandbox elements. Like I said, more just the community building/survival aspects. :] It'll be a bit clearer when I elaborate a tad more on the aspects I had in mind. Given the setting and circumstances of the story I think it'll make more sense later on.

And hell no the classes would not be gender-locked, I hate when MMOs of any kind do that. I'm a huge fan of customization. B| These are just initial designs, after all! A lot of fun to do though. I hope to have zombie girls and ghost guys sketched up in the near future.

Hm, so these are the classes. Some of them I can more or less guess, but what are the titles for some of the others?

Of course, they all look very unique and interesting and I would love to see more of this personal project and find out where this will go.

All the character desgins look so incredible and expressive! I'm really fond of the zombie guy at the top, the guy at the bottom, the Egyptian girl and the girl wearing the cape. Great job as always!
