I think I saw him explaining how he does his sketches, and doodles on his tumblr once. He basically just takes his linework that he did traditionally and puts it on a transparency layer and copies it to make the linework more refined and darker. He then edits out that extra stuff to make it cleaner, but he leaves a couple of sketchy stuff in because he likes the grit.

Brushes can look surprisingly traditional.
It does indeed look like he drew on-top, but I've seen enough videos of digital sketching to allow the idea of these being 100% digital.

It just seems like a lot of extra work to convert it from pencil to digital. if you're already drawing traditionally, why not just finish traditionally?

It does, which is why I'm implying that all the sketches are probably done digitally with the right settings.

I completely agree! Fitting breast space to a suit of armour means necessary movement will be restricted. These are all the more cool for how practical they are.
