I would be great if the SS Combine design would have made it into Half-Life 2 instead of the retail design.

Sure thing, but it wouldn't fit with the universe of the game, it would have been a good choice when the game was in beta and the universe was more industrial style

It's a shame, that everything looks like generic sci Fi in retail version instead of the dieselpunk inspired style the combine had.
