Description
Right to LeftPRR A-3 0-4-0Β #16: A recent edition to my fleet, I was to repair this for sale at my Hobby shop, but I decided to buy it for myself! It runs loud, but well!
Southern 0-6-0 #1435: Another used engine from the Hobby Store, this engine is temporarily out of order, due to an untimely frame snap...
Chattanooga 0-6-0 #150: A Bachmann 0-6-0 from the "Chattanooga" set, this engine has been one of the main engines for years.
Western Maryland 2-8-0 #760: One of my favorite locomotives, this is the first spectrum engine I ever purchased. She has been on the point of many PHTC&M freights for 3 years. She is currently in the shop for a Rock Knocker rebuild.
Buffalo Creek and Gully 2-8-0 13: Nicknamed "Ole Slobberface" in honor of her prototype, this engine has yet to experience mainline running. When the Coal Hollow Short Line finishes construction, it will be a main power on coal trains.
Chattanooga 2-8-0 #638: With suspicious resemblance to Ole Slobberface, this engine is the 3rd Tyco 2-8-0 i've bought. I plan to rebuild her into an USATC S-160.
Western Maryland 4-6-2 #204: My main passenger engine, she pulled fast limiteds for a short time on the PHTC&M, until the construction of the CHSL started. Now she occasionally pulls the Workmen to the current work site.
New York Central 4-6-4 #6069: A product of the Marx Locomotive Works in the 60's, this engine was in a state of dispare when I acquired her. I fixed her up with some oil, a rubber band, and TLC. Little did I know, she has a smoke generator, than has a timed cylander that makes realistic smoke! This timeless classic pulls the varnish of the SP&S!
Pennsylvania Railroad 4-8-2 #4016: A fine fast freight engine, she has and still is a vital part of the time freight service of the SP&S.
Duluth Mesabi and Iron Range 2-10-2 #511: A heavy freight engine that works the coal drags of WV, 511 hauls and shoves tons upon tons of black diamonds, through the Mountain state.
Western Maryland 2-10-2 #1129: Working alongside 511, these two battle the steep grades, and always win. They are the unbeatable duo!
Baltimore and Ohio 2-10-2 #6206: A 55 year old engine that has the capability of taking 15" radius track, this engine is unfortunately out of service, and will be until I can find the issue with her motor.
Baltimore and Ohio 2-8-8-4 #7600: Last, but not least, the great EM-1. She hauls everything from coal drags, to varnish. She is my pride and joy, and when not in operation she is displayed for all to see.

When I go on to facebook or Youtube, I see Β Model railway Exhibitions in the US and UK for example - other than being a little larger than here in Australia, they look almost the same! Β Enthusiasts enjoying their hobby and enjoying 'Railroadin' - and isn't that really all it's about! Β The same with magazines etc. Β I sincerely believe there is something special about the hobby of Railroads (I bought my Russian decapod on Ebay - have also purchased a WM 2-8-0 Bachmann there as well)

I know what you mean - I have 47 locomotives at the moment (predominantly UK prototype)... Β It only seems like yesterday I was selling all my brass because I had no job! Β The sad part is I still don't have a layout

You've got a lot more 'Big Engines'! I really like that DMIR Santa Fe type, I've been looking for some larger motive power for freight (I cannot find any parts for 'Malissa', and I'm thinking of replacing the whole tender chassis with one off a diesel), and seeing as most of the drivers blind, my tighter curves shouldn't be much trouble.
I'm also considering some 4-8-2s, more of the dual service stuff to put on freight trains. Cuz the Pacific has shown capable of freight, she just hates it.

That may work with the 2-8-0! Or you could take a bachmann 0-6-0 chassis and make it a tractor engine!
The IHC 4-8-2 engines are fantastic! I would recommend them! My pacific hates freight too. But she runs like a dream on passenger trains.

WELL THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING... but slippy. I'm using that chassis as the back half to a little baby Garratt, the water tank unit is unpowered and has very smooth bearings (if you blow on it, it will roll)
I'll see if I can find one! And I'm gonna probably figure out how to get some removable deflectors on the Pacific, and possibly similar ones for that 4-8-2.

A baby Garratt? Tell me more.
Wouldn't be that hard. Make a few styrene slips, and rig them to slip onto the Hand rails.

0-6-0+0-6-0, it'll be US style too.
That's what I'm planning, they'll be like LNER A2 deflectors probably.

You have a rather impressive roster! And there are a few I see that are on my wishlist!
I see you have one of the Rivarossi B&O 2-10-2s also! They're really nice engines. Mine ran pretty well, but could still use a real good cleaning. That and one of the electrical leads came off of the motor. So I need to re-solder that in place. But I'm thinking about re motoring the locomotive entirely.

Considering that I don't have an IHC donor mechanism I think I'll stick with what I have. The hardest thing I'm going to have to do is file or grind down the flanges as they are WAY over sized! Even on code 83 rail the flanges are still hitting the plastic spike heads... O_o
However I am on the look-out for a Bachmann Russian 2-10-0. I have a crazy idea to backdate it to have a wagon top boiler. Basically a more modern version of the first 2-10-0 built by Norris. But was too long of a wheelbase so it, funny enough, was also the first 2-8-2 ever built! I plan on sticking with a 2-10-0 arrangement.

Sounds cool! Why not draw a concept?

I plan to draw a concept at some point, but I have some other artwork that has a higher priority. And mainly due to the fact that I can make some money with it.
Sadly no, I don't know anyone with a lathe. But I know one can be had for cheap via Harbor Frieght. Same with a small drill press. Both are tools I would like to acquire.

That's a possible plan, but I'm really wanting to start some real progress on my HOn30 layout. So I've been acquiring the needed tools and materials for that. I need rail more than anything since it's all going to be hand laid. Bought some spikes online and some basswood for ties.Β
Right now I'm looking at how to realistically weather Hand Laid Track and tie staining techniques.
But the article would be a nice financial boost.

You are a man who hand lays his track, eh?!
π: 0 β©: 1
gunslinger87 In reply to Engine97 [2015-10-22 05:30:56 +0000 UTC]
Well, typically, I prefer using flex track. I've never truely hand laid track before, ever! But in this case, the curves are quite sharp and suitable flex track for HOn30 just doesn't exist. To me anyway...
I know, PECO makes a line of flex track for HOn30, but its code 80 rail. Which is freaking HUGE for 30" gauge!
Code 55 is still a bit large, but narrow gauge standards, code 40 would be better. But code 55 with work for me and have a much more scale appearance. The over sized rail of Peco's track would be too much of an eyesore for me and ruin the look of things. So I've decided to jump head first into hand laying. I've already bought basswood for ties, I have two packs of micro spikes on the way. (about 2k spikes worth) An N scale track gauge for code 55. And I have some pliers I can use. Albeit not intended for spiking, but they will work.
I've really been looking into how to realistically weather wooden ties for track. I'm leaning more towards staining them with either an Alcohol & Ink mixture. (more of a grey stain) Or Vinager & Steel Wool solution. (More of a brown stain.
I also want to mimic dirt ballasted track rather than stone. Seeing as most narrow gauge railroads used dirt rather than rock or stone ballast. Especially operations with financial trouble. So I'm looking into how to model that. Granted it would be simple enough to dig up some dirt myself... but all the dirt around here is red, REALLY red! And certainly not something you'd see in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State!
Hand laying also gives me another advantage, I can ballast my track before I spike my rails down!
