Description
I believe that the first four weeks of our production class have been a very interesting learning experience for many of the members of the class. As for myself, I had an idea about how much really goes into a production, but when I thought of this class, I pictured us working in Maya from the beginning. Even though this goes against the preproduction pipeline that we learned in our first semester at the DAC, I still thought of it as just another class having to deal with Maya. I think that one of the aspects of this class that everyone is enjoying is really getting in there, and doing some of the dirty work that is involved with concept artwork, and developing a story.Even though people disagree on what characters should look like, and what story events should take place, I feel like they can leave their personal feelings behind, and still produce something worthwhile when they are over-ruled by what the group wants. Having said this, these first four weeks have been a great learning experience with regards to the fact that everyone gets their toes stepped on at least once during the whole pipeline. One of the first things that really came at a lesson this semester was that you won’t always get your way, and not to take it personally when you don’t. For every time that the story or character doesn’t go your way, there will be another time in the future where it does.
I think that the second interesting lesson to me was the fact that to be involved in the act of preproduction doesn’t just mean doing concept artwork. I was really worried about the prospect of this, because I thought that I was going to be expected to create a lot of artwork this whole semester. I was surprised to find out that I can have an equal role in the concepts aspect by just adding my personal opinion in the form of writing and research to the group’s work. I have always worried about my drawing skills, especially being in a fine arts degree. I have taken lengths to improve them, but I think that it is still apparent that the drawings that I have produced are not the strongest part of my portfolio. Rather, I would like to think that I have had a greater impact on the project from communicating with my group members- giving them feedback on their artwork, and just generally posting ideas up on the forum to give people a place to start thinking.
I never really liked group work in high school, because it seemed like I was always the one who did all of the work, and then the entire group got credit for it. I believe that for the most part, this will be a different experience though. Since we all want to make careers out of 3D, I think that people will be more motivated to work on the project. In any case, I believe that the weekly self assessments were a valuable tool for me during the first four weeks, because I kind of used them to gage my forward momentum in developing pieces of artwork and writing for the idea that our group pitched.
The last major thing that I learned in these past four weeks is that a daunting task can become completely manageable when it is taken one step at a time. When the class started, coming up with a story within our small group seemed like a huge task- I felt like I didn’t really know where to begin, or what direction to go in once I did start. Just coming up with the one-liners was a huge help, and the first step along the path that step by step helped our group build an interesting story, and a great pitch. I can’t wait to see what we as a class turn out by the end of our senior year.
