While browsing Solar Flare art, I came across TheBlueBlur09 's OC, Solar Eclipse, a version of Solar Flare turned evil. Now, there’s something you should know about me: I’m not fond of the whole “seeing beloved characters go down a dark path and become evil through some sort of means, whether it through their will, manipulation, possession or otherwise” trope. Likewise, seeing the pic and reading the backstory on Solar Flare becoming a broken plant driven to the zombie’s side by neglect and rejection made me feel sad. However, at the same time, it also gave me the idea to make this piece.

Basically, it’s the aftermath of a one on one heartfelt battle between Solar Eclipse and her former best friend, Green Shadow. Partway through this fight, this would be where Solar Flare reaches her breaking point, being unable to cope with the mental and emotional strain of having to harm her best friend who she, in truth, cares so deeply for… It just wasn’t worth it anymore… She no longer cared for the fact that Zomboss had rescued her… She no longer cared for if her friends replaced her with a genetic replica… She just wanted the pain to stop… She just… wanted to be back with her true friends…

As such, she begins to commit self harm during the fight, knowing that her words were ineffective at regaining the trust of her former allies back when she first tried to return to the plants. She knew the only chance she had at returning to plants at this point was to break open the suit, which was no easy task especially with pain that she’d have to endure seeing as the roboticized components were interlocked with her nervous system. Even so, she pressed on, much to the confusion and horror of Green Shadow. Zomboss predictably knew that there was a chance of Solar Flare would at some point refuse to continue working for him, whether it be through failing to convince her that the plants left her for dead or otherwise. As such, he had a microchip installed inside her head during the roboticization process which allowed him to assume direct control of her mind at any point as a failsafe mechanism. This caused the fight to continue onwards, albeit with Solar Flare at certain points overpowering it and continuing to do self harm.

Eventually she manages to cut into the back of her head with her chainsaw-like attachment, destroying the microchip, but doing severe harm to herself in the process. At this point in the fight, Green Shadow unleashes a powerful attack to finish her off, which leads to the events of this pic. Green Shadow is left in complete disbelief as the dust clears and she sees the face behind Solar Eclipse, horrified of the revelation of the truth… Solar Flare is broken in all 3 senses (physical, mental and emotional) and breaks down into tears… Following Green Shadow picking up and hugging her best friend, she too breaks down… Afterwards, Green Shadow would end up returning Solar Flare to the plant base to treat her injuries and disassemble the remaining robotic components, where the Solar Flare ends up sharing a heartfelt reunion with her true friends along with Green Shadow. As for what happens with the Replica Solar Flare, I’m not sure.
