Description
Doesn't this look dangerous? Most probably not politically correct.

This is my first Irken OC, Vaika. I never put a story down in writing. She probably looks a bit girlie than what she is.

    Name: Vaika (Vai)

    Gender: Female
    Race: Irken
Height: I'm still working it out.
Weight: Seriously, what do you think?
    Age: 193 yrs
    Occupation: N/A (She's a bit of an odd-job nomad)

    Background
A bit of a drifter, Vaika is a non-loyalist (she's not wearing an Irken uniform, durr), misanthropic over her own race, and normally travels the Universe alone. Her first occupation of choice was a lab tech on Irk, but got bored of the job, got sick of her loyalist Irken peers, and went to become an apprentice as an electrical engineer with Vortion, "Boris" Bort Lir. There, she met an old fellow student, Ver (a.k.a V=IR ), and became a bit more tolerant of the Irken race. (Though Ver did annoy her quite a bit at times, like annoying younger brothers might). After studying with Bort Lir for a few years, she had left, but before leaving, was given special gloves and boots that stored electricity in the palms and soles, in case of any combat. It was a sort of gift for her new life, I suppose.

Now she's a bit of a wanderer, hanging around gangs of Irkens and other species. You know. Tough gal stuff.

    I'll add more later.

    Extra Info:
  • Like Vir, she wears all rubber coated clothing for full resistance against electric shock.
  • Metallic clips on dress-shirt are much like Vir's buckle on his boot, except has it doesn't tell the time (aww )
  • The electric current is very controllable when it comes to direction, hence it is a safer and more affectable weapon.
  • The current and voltage is adjustable, adjustments are hardwired from her PAK to her brain, to control how much flow she wants.
  • Current comes from both the base of the boots and the gloves.

  • TL;DR:

I really wonder if I can do my comics like this.. it's so nice.
Getting my way around the Invader Zim fanartists, I come across some fantastic styles and ways of drawing Irkens.

As I'm a curious sort (And a big fan of ~InvaderSaik 's art - I wonder if she knows it? XD), I thought I might have a go at drawing Irkens this way. There are quite a few, I notice, that draw them more "realistic" like this. It's fun, I have to say

This is...wow...I suppose this is the best artwork of yours I have seen so far. At least I like it the most. It´s amazing.

First of all: I love the colours you used. They all look calming, even the red of her eyes and fit together very well.

The shading: ... ... !!! Awesome! Just great! The folds in her clothing, how the lightning reflects on cloth, gloves and shoes, as if you have thought about every kind of material she wears and how it would reflect the light. Especially the shoes and the top look wonderful.

The antennae look beautiful, too, a little fragile and pretty. The outfit makes me wish I had something like that because it´s gorgeous! *drool*

I am not sure whether I had been one before...but I think I became a fan of you^^

Ok.. you have no idea how much that last comment of yours warmed my heart. Here, there is a fantastic traditional artist I WONDER how she keeps it so fine and neat, and so perfectly drawn (I swear, I couldn't ever put so much as to how you do it. Probably why I stick to a computer! ) and then come out with a confidence. I hardly show it, but I always look at good traditional artists more than digital ones. Irony

Thank you very, very much The colouring I have to say was a tester more than anything else, since I've never used the technique before. Shading like this isn't as hard as it looks if you're doing it in parts! The colours I've always had in mind ever since my no0b days in the IZ fandom xD I kept with them because they just suited.. I'm glad there was SOMETHING good about being a no0b!

The clothing the design was a big play on an old outfit of her's, but I'm quite through and happy with it (: Gosh.. I want it too. But I think I'd wear nearly any Irken's outfit. Maybe even Skoodge's, if that thing got a good wash! Thank you, once more. I always come online to look forward to such fantastic comments such as these ^^

Do you teally think of me like that? Wow...I don´t hear that very often. Thank you so much...
I still see me more as a critic of good artists to help them becoming better, not as a good artist myself^^ Maybe because the only people I know personally who draw a lot are and . And they are a lot better, so I see me as...not so good XD

You did not use it before? It´s a marvellous result for a tester then!
You seem to have a good sense for suiting coulours, which I find very imortant for the mood of the whole picture!

Oh, no problem! I began to love commenting your pictures with more effort because I love your pictures (yes I do^^) and you always take the time to write a long answer, too! This makes me really happy <3

Yes. I don't ever find the occassion to say so though. Wouldn't it be a little strange if I said so all of a sudden? I really wish I had more time to properly browse your gallery. I don't often have the time online these days, but I do those little quick looks, and I can see what I see (: Probably it is not heard often, because like me, people are short for time to look and say so.
Aw, now let me say, we are totally in the same boat. My best friend in real life, who also has a deviantART account is not only younger then me by a few months, but is also a artistic prodigy considering her age. I try SO hard to be like her. She's my best friend, and still says my art is great, but it's so hard to believe when she is in fact, really fantastic.

Thank you! I must say, it's what I learned with using a simple colour wheel, and playing with the colours until I find something I like. It would probably take me a few minutes just to get something pleasing to the eye. I sometimes look at colour schemes of other artpieces for ideas

I always do my best! I am a bit slow at times with my replies, because it may be days before I can come to catch up on my longer messages (you and a couple others do the same with these thoughtful messages). That, and I sometimes be a bit naughty and go comment on other artworks before I start reading my replies I do try to go around with my thought out comments, as I've said. I am so glad you appreciate my comments as I do yours

Oh, since I don´t upload new pics so often, you have plenty of time to watch all of my pictures later! (not like D.Fal, who uploaded 200 pictures during two weeks XD)
I would be very thankful for you paying so much attention to me!^^ I already am; having so many long replies of yours in my inbox surely IS a great thing!
Well, I am consciously trying not to be like her, because I won´t be able to reach her level (simply because she draws every day whereas I finish one in a week after having a long break from drawing (a few years...). As you may see when you go through my gallery; I do a lot of different stuff. She gives me some tips, as I give her a lot of feedback in real life and on DA. [link] received a lot of criticism by me until it came out like this...it´s wonderful...
Oh, I don´t think you try to be like her by copying her, don´t missunderstand me here...
I know what you mean. When she sais my artwork is great I always ask for reasons, on the one hand because detailed criticism helps a lot more than a simple "awsum", on the other hand it prevents me from thinking she just sais it because she´s my friend...

That´s a good method, indeed...

Oh, I do the same, don´t worry^^ Sometimes I just doubt being able to write an answer worth to be sent and just want to decrease the message- and deviationinbox.
Especially when I have conversations as huge as those with Irken-defect: [link]

Ah! I noticed within her being on the account for only 1 month, she must have had a turbo-submission day or something, because she's doubled what I have in just about half a years worth of being on this site! She is quite the artistic machine
Well, you are actually quite an interesting person to talk to, if you haven't noticed it yourself. Some people may go on talking about things I do not know, or things that are petty and just always complaints, or not thought out. You don't do any of that, so I find you a very awesome person to talk to. I say I only talk to 3 people I know like this. The rest, not so much. It's hard to find someone to talk to sometimes.
You know, I love a lot of how D.Fal has a different approach to drawing Irkens. They are real, and true to what I would see them to be as actual aliens, yet they are not hideous or frightening like other people's interpretations are. You're going to have to tell her that for me xD I get so embarrassed sometimes.
Be very glad you have someone there to give you tips and feedback, and are kind and gentle, yet tough enough in a caring way to help you improve. It also shows, that underneath, they know you can do it. They wouldn't be helping you if they thought you were an artistic dead end. Obviously that must mean something
That is so right! When my friend does the same she will say "Juliet, this is great artwork, I love it!". I ask her.. "Why? What is it that makes it great?". The answer depends. Sometimes, she'll just say "because it is". Less often than that, she might say some reasons, like the style or something. But still, I get the feeling that because she is my friend and my better, she must have the need to be kind like that.

Oh, I certainly agree! And I find it troublesome when someone sends me a message, and find I don't know how to respond to it. I do whatever I can to think of something, but then I give up, close the message and hope they are not offended. Even with the really kind comments, I'm not sure of. I hate to seem repetitive and say "Thank you, that was lovely for you to say so!", because obviously, they will get bored of it eventually. I want to put in more, but I never can. That is what is hard about being an artist. The comments you will receive.
Haha! xD I have messages like that, just the same. It fills my heart with satisfaction, to see the page filled up with so many words. I do the lot the same, but with Yeakuaf. [link] We tend to debate a lot, and verse each other on opinion (I tend to lose xD) but we still respect each others opinions, and talk as we normally do in another conversation.

DeviantIrk In reply to enigmatia [2010-01-13 07:41:24 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree! Especially within the DDs you find hell a lot of three-word comments like "wow, thats awesome" (I always wonder how this feels for the artist). I don´t really understand that, because I usually don´t look at those people´s pages, but when somebody seemingly put a lot of effort in the comment or at least seems to have had a closer look on the picture, I do.
I also am not that kind of "artistic machine"; I rarely draw, but if I do, there is always some kind of symbolism, a message or similar aspect in it and most people don´t seem to appreciate or even notice that. Most people want funny, coloured fanworks. It´s some kind of sad, really, but I am glad when there are people who actually see some sense in one´s artworks and those who answer on long comments like you do. Once I wrote a long one for a picture which was not very good, but I sensed the artist did not get a lot of comments, not to speak of constructive criticism. All I got back was "Lol, thanks for the information" - which was quite disappoining. Well.

I´ll give you a great example: [link]
Ahhh...complementary colours are very good for this purpose, too! Just try it, it´s fun to work with that^^
The dragon was just an example - that bird you drew was great, too! Did I comment on that picture, by the way...? I focused on the messages I wanted to reply and now I have 90 Deviations in my inbox *drops dead*

Okay, there it is: [link]
...it perfectly fits to my OC Cas...it´s so wonderful...arrgh...

(Damn, I should really check my deviations when I login)

I do like it. I really do. The way you've thrown the light off the electricity is probably my favorite part of this piece (As you should know by now, I'm a sucker for anything that glows), howvere, I must comment that unfortunately that pose does nt sem entirely natural. It's clear you've tried to establish a strong line of motion, and it shows, but the way you've positioned her arms throws off the line a little, and makes her look more like she's leaning/lying on something. I would suggest that the right arm reaches outwards to the side a bit more, and the left hand bends towards the bottom of the picture so that the pose is both more powerful and more natural.
Sorry, I'm practising my critique on you

(Gosh, you're not the only one suffering. I actually have a whole bunch of amazing art I have little to know time giving a proper comment on, no matter how fantastic they are!)

Aaah, yessss. Pose. I knew it all along, there was something REALLY weird with it. I just never know what.. A line of of motion? Is that something like those lines they draw down the back of a sketch of a character? Because I've tried those things and I have NO clue as to how it works Hmm. At least I've still got the sketch. I'll redo the sketch. I don't think I'll redo the whole digital work though.

Don't be sorry! I'm all up for reading it from you It really does help out!

InvaderSaik In reply to enigmatia [2009-12-17 03:34:36 +0000 UTC]

(Hmm, yeah D: )

The line of motion is basically the general movement of the picture. You have a curved-downward line of motion here. It just helps to indicate where you want the motion to be going, basically.

That's good to know then :3

I didn't get a chance to comment because I know it's gotta be a long comment for this one so it takes time. Plus, this picture is so awesome in so many ways.

This is an excellent way of coloring. I really think this is your best work yet and you should use this style more often.

Where should I start. The antennae are just divine. I love the highlights which makes the antennae look so slick and smooth. The lineart is pretty smooth and crisp and looks wonderful. I as well love the skin and Vai's shading on the head.

My favorite part has got to be the eyes, I bet you had fun coloring that because I always find that the best part in coloring. I really love the shading and the highlighting and the eye shine. The color is just perfect here, not to bright but just right! Her eyelashes on the bottom look really nice.

Her jacket looks so snazzy I love the blue, white and gray highlights on it. I also enjoy the underside color of her coat. It's really a nice dark mulberry color.

Wow the arms! I really love the glove armor on her forearms. They look so damn shiny I just love the low opacity highlights on that.

Now the gloves, those look splendid as well. I love fingerless gloves. They look pretty rad. I like how you incorporated some blue highlights reflecting from the blue electricity current.

Her blue tunic is also quite excellent looking! I really like her belt under her bust there it really gives a boost to her curves.

And the stripes makes a very IZish touch. ^^

The boots look fantastic, I love the blue highlights once more as well as the white. The boots are also my fave with the jacket and gloves! They really look like rubber boots! Great for the rain right? Unless she's weak towards rain? (oh right there's no rain on Irk. Unless they have another form of precipitation since they should have a different form of 'water' I like how you didn't give a generic looking boot, with the steel toes. (Like Nny and Tak have) It just looks more original that way, plane toes with the steel buckles.

Critique: I really can see the similar shading of the tunic as the skin and they look like they're both soft, maybe incorporate the same rubbery shine you did in the jacket and glove on her tunic and stripes if it is made of rubber? Cause then it would look like rubber more.

Lastly, The background is phenomenal.
Great work as usual.

Haha! I'm glad you came to comment! Coming online, seeing a comment like this.. I just feel like I've done something great XD

Whoa.. your wonderful comments on the different parts of this artwork left me going.. "Wow. I did that good of a job?". You really know how to bring up a person! Thank you, thank you. The eyes where indeed, the best part of colouring. Though another thing I have gotten into the enjoyment of would be the lines on the things like the boots that show the squeaky shines

The boots actually.. I draw on probably 2 different characters I liked them too much. Hehe, the steel-caps thing would have been cool add on to a pair of boots, but the really do hide the shape of the boot, not to mention add an unnecessary piece of white/silver to the end of a pair of dark coloured boots. But I'm glad you like them. I was never too appreciative of my own designs for characters, because they never seemed so eye-catching compared to a lot of others I've seen. But then again, I try to keep it simple and realistic.

Oh crap! I forgot the dress and the stockings! I always do the shines first on the gloves and boots when I colour an Irken's outfit, just to to remind me that those are of a different sort of material. I kind of forgot she wore ALL rubber xD Thanks for pointing it out, it always terrific knowing someone can point out these things to me (And critique is always welcome ) Thank you. the background.. I just wish I could do more with it than just the big whoosh. I'm working on drawing backgrounds to suit, but those things are so tedious! Eh, I'm trying xDD

Oh yes. The electric current. I still don't get that real "electric" feel from it, but I feel it's not as bad as it could have been. Thank you

hm, seems like i forgot to finish the comment and start to draw the sketching of ameliah, seems to work ok, but theres nothing like zim style. i might as well upload it when i finish (will have a lot of time to draw next week, holidays started). at least it's a good thing i started. and i think u might get amused by her references and backgrounds ^^. i think i made up a whole nation.

Aww, I don't even try my characters in IZ form, though I know I should! I think I'll try it now actually. I got OpenCanvas to try it out on xD Don't worry though. IZ style, even if I originated drawing it, I'm a bit of fail at drawing it.

Oh yes, the holidays Holidays for me started ages ago, so I've been having all the time in the world to draw. I'd look forward to seeing that!

Ooh, I see Ameliah there! She makes me think of the Tallests, not just the height, but how she's all thin and delicate like that. Those curls look neat I like how you tried drawing the different characters of Invader Zim besides just Zim, Dib, Tak, Gir and Gaz. It's nice I've been taking a hand at drawing Sizz-Lor and the Shadow Hog myself. Those big guys are amusing xD

well, ameliah doesn't look that good there, comparing to the idea i got her to. was still fun though, though you haven't seen the other sketch i've made for that cause, in her human form. i consider it kind of odd, ther difference of styles is too obvious and i never like that. so i keep it away from humans xD.
well, sizz-lor is not my favorite guy in the series, far from that . i really enjoyed the shadow form of miss bitters in the halloween episode (even tried to draw her too, in my sketchbook i use for school). that and gaz/membrane shadow forms are really cool too .

You're welcome xD I actually had a whole lot of fun redrawing her. I was thinking to just lineart the other one, but that's the lazy thing to do Besides, I was dying to draw her like this!

Naw, it's fine I don't mind waiting. I procrastinate too, so I probably deserve a bit of procrastinating back! xD

Oh naw, that sort of thing passes over with time xD I had a REAL procrastinating month last month but I got into the habit of thinking "You know, if you start wasting your type people WILL get mad with you!". It's all about power of the MIND!

Well, I mean, I still procrastinate a bit, but not as much as I used to ;D
