The world trembled and the floor and walls began to crack. Feller found themself scrambling to follow the rushing movements of myres flooding out of the town. The smell of adrenaline and panic tainted the water. Voices rumbled out for loved ones, like a haunting choir of whales from miles away. They were almost inaudible with the sound of stone hitting stone from every direction. A cacophony of deafening rain, pouring down gradually to bash one’s skull in.
Feller felt the pressure of the ocean shift. There were horrible sounds of rock crumbling around them. As their home fell to pieces.
They wanted to dive to the first nook they could find and hide. They wanted to wait for this to pass, like a storm’s choppy water would always settle again.
But if they did, they would never be found again.
“To the surface! To the Shallows!” Feller heard. Through the sound of their home crumbling around them. They raced to follow them, tail and arms pushing through the water. They grasped for the bodies myres rushing past. They squirmed away as quickly as Feller felt them. They disappeared into the water.
Until all at once, their chest was deflated. A stone had fell on them faster than they could tear themself away. They could smell the myres getting further away. They could make out their voices. “Keep going! We can’t turn back.”
“Wait for me! Wait for me!” Feller cried out. “Don’t leave me!”
They were hopeless as rocks tumbled around them. They covered their head with their arms as the smell of their people disappeared. As the world began to grow increasingly loud as the destroyed caves ground against each other.
Feller shrunk. They squirmed. They made themself as small as possible before the rocks could do it for them.
There was a weem. A primal desire to survive. And great effort.
The ocean floor wasn’t exactly kind to a myre on its own. But Feller survived. They scrambled to learn, adapt, and accept they had been abandoned.
The Depths had kept them alive. For what reasons, Feller couldn’t comprehend. It wasn’t for them to decide. But they were terrified of what would happen if they were to leave the Depths’ domain. A dark jellyfish loomed over their shoulder. It’s great tentacles grasped at Feller’s tail. It never stung. It never answered what would happen.
Their heart panged. The myres left them behind. They never came back to dig them out. They waited. They cried. They wailed.
They had to do it themself. They had to find a way to live without anyone’s help. They were bruised and scarred and tired. But they were alive.
The warmth of the shallows was motivating, though. At times, they felt the Heavens hit their back. The inviting sense of light and sun upwards.
There was an inkling of what might be up there. That it could be worthwhile. Maybe they’d find a home. Maybe they’d find friends. They quietly prayed they wouldn’t find their family.
What could be up there? A warm welcome from the Shallows, maybe. The myres could be expectantly watching the water for Feller to emerge.
What if they gasped and cheered? What if they were relieved to see them? Maybe they were afraid. Maybe they were too scared to return, in case the Depths would swallow them like they did the rest of the buried myres.
But what if they were up there and they shove them back under? What if Feller rose to the surface just for the Depths to crash back down and destroy their new home? What if this was all a test and Feller had failed again? They weren’t quick enough. They didn’t arrive soon enough. They didn’t break the surface. They were too much of a coward.
What if? What if, what if, what if. Questioning for years. Praying to Gods who haven’t answered.
They might. They have.
They haven’t.
Feller gripped their head, floating in agony in the waters. Their stomach turned as they started to fall.
If the Depths wanted to smite so badly, they would have. Maybe they should have. Maybe they should get it over with. Why inflict this for so long? Why go through it for so long?
I don’t want to die.
I won’t die. I refuse to die.
The waters are safe. Safe enough. What lurks here is familiar. The places to hide and the places to fight.
The pressure of water squeezed around Feller’s chest. They were falling for far too long. They felt a headache grip their skull as their joints ached.
They were going too far into the Depth’s domain. This happened at times. They drifted too far and couldn’t move. Couldn’t react quickly enough. They ached for days.
I have to rise.
To surface. To the Shallows.
Feller’s fins propelled them upward. A force that felt nearly automatic. Something that Feller was almost afraid of. Their limbs were being pushed harder than they anticipated. They were going quickly. Tail and legs thrashing upwards. The water fought. The water pulled them back. They felt the currents that were tugging them deeper. The Depths’ gentle but persistent pull.
The jellyfish followed. Always.
They swam higher.
To the Shallows? What if something happens?
But what if nothing happens?
But I’m scared.
But I’m scared anyway.
They rose. The cold water grew warmer as the sun reached down.
They left me behind but I’m not going to leave myself behind. I deserve the Shallow’s prophecy.
I deserve to breathe the air of the Heavens.
I want this. If I’m disappointed, if it hurts, that means it means something.
Adrenaline rushed behind Feller’s ears. Their teeth grit as their muzzle grit into a snarl. They fought themself, not to turn tail out of fear. Not to turn around and hide again. Away from the dark nooks and crannies.
The surface was unknown. It could be cruel.
But it could be kind.
Their feet hit a sandy ground. They were confused for a moment. The bottom of the ocean? They had been swimming for so long.
They heartily sniffed the water. It smelled of fish from the shallows that would drift far from their homes. And something familiar that Feller couldn’t quite place.
Their heart skipped a beat.
Myres.
They were different. They smelled like something new. But they were here. They survived. The Shallows Prophecy was true.
Feller flung themself forward. They struggled to swim without running back into the floor again. So they dragged themself upward. Their wings sloppily kicked up sand and pebbles. Their tail was being tugged by the currents. They felt the waves, the more they climbed. As they climbed and climbed and climbed.
They grew tired.
They trudged forward.
The water was harder to breathe. There was so much sand and the currents yanked away their footing.
But Feller broke the surface.
They panted. They snarled. Their teeth grit and they snarled over their muscles, crying out for relief.
Myres were here. They were talking before Feller surfaced. They felt their gazes and heard the sniffing noses of their kind trying to figure out if their senses were being honest with them.
There were others here too. Creatures and plants and life. And nothing happened as Feller dragged themself fully onto land.
They would have sighed with relief if they weren’t catching their breath.
Once their tail no longer touched the water, Feller fell. Collapsing on the beach, their belly lay on the ground, and their sides rose and fell heavily.
The myres spoke. A language that Feller didn’t recognize? Perhaps their head was too cloudy to hear them properly.
“... in Staves Rest?”
“… alive …”
“… how long? …”
“… they okay?”
Feller would ask questions later.
For right now, they would nap.
