Description
Zazu had only taken Nala partway back to Pride Rock when they found themselves faced with Nala's father."You can go," he told Zazu. "I'll take Nala back to her mother."
"O-of course, sire," the hornbill stammered, turning around. Before he flew away, he gave Nala one final pitiful glance. Even though Zazu was furious that the two cubs had almost gotten him killed, his heart twinged a little. He hoped their fathers wouldn't be too hard on the kids.
Nala was entirely silent on the way back, keeping her shoulders square and nose to the ground. As if it couldn't get any worse, the King was angry at her, but now so was her father. Nala was exceptionally close to her father and the last thing she could take was him being furious with her. Granted, it was her own fault, but it still hurt.
Her mother greeted them as they neared home. On seeing them, she ran towards them and nuzzled Nala. "Oh, my daughter! Are you hurt? Are you wounded in any way? I'm just so glad you're all right."
Nala's heart hurt at the tremble in her mother's voice. Had she been so worried? What if the King hadn't gotten there in time to save her and Simba?
"Come on, let's get you back inside," her mother said, bringing her closer with her paw.
"'Fina, not now," her father spoke up for the first time, and his voice froze Nala. "I need to have a little talk with Nala first."
Sarafina nodded, plopping herself down on the ground and pushing Nala a little towards her father. Her father sat down as well and placed one paw over the other. His gaze made Nala curl up even more. She wished that the ground could just open up and swallow her whole at this moment.
"D-Dad?" she softly asked. "Are you mad?"
He sighed deeply. "No," he said. "Just disappointed."
It just got worse. Nala might have been able to handle her father mad at her, but that look that he was giving her, that look of extreme disappointment broke her little heart.
"What you did today was incredibly stupid and dumb," he chastised. "The fact that you went to an Elephant Graveyard of all places...how could you put yourself and Simba in such danger? I thought I raised you better than this."
"Asani," Sarafina calmly told her mate before his anger blew out. He took a deep breath and exhaled.
"Do you realize the consequences of your actions?" he asked his daughter. "You deliberately put yourself in harm's way. Didn't you think about how that would affect the ones around you? How it would affect your family? Your mother was worried sick when Zazu arrived. You're incredibly lucky to be alive right now."
"Asani," Sarafina warned again. Her mate really meant well, but his anger could sometimes get away with him. It did come from concern and relief though. "But your father's right, Nala. We were all incredibly worried."
"I'm sorry," Nala said in a small voice. "It's just that, it was Simba's idea-"
"So will you do whatever Simba does just because he does it?" Asani cut her off.
"I-I mean," Nala stammered. "h-he's my friend!"
"Which is precisely why you should know when to put your foot down."
She looked confused, so Asani exhaled once again. "Do you know how the Kings choose their Council?" he asked.
"Because you're childhood friends?" Nala offered.
Asani chuckled lightly. "No, not exactly." He shifted a bit so that he was more comfortable. "He picked us because we're the only ones who can stand up to the King of the Pridelands and tell him he's making a mistake."
She looked up at him. "Being a good friend and adviser doesn't just mean going along with what the other says. Many times it requires you to tell them they're wrong."
"Isn't that being a bad friend?"
"On the contrary, Nala. Just going with what they say is being a bad friend. A good friend knows when to stop you from making a decision you'll regret. A good friend makes you a better lion."
Nala looked at the ground. "You and Simba are close," he told her. "That's why its important for you to know how to be a good friend. Both of you should make each other better, and sometimes that involves saying no."
"I understand."
He smiled slightly, knowing his message had gotten through. "I can't simply let you off for this, however," he told her. "You're grounded, Nala. You can't see Simba or play with your cousins. You need time to clear your head."
She nodded. She had expected a grounding at best.
"Now go on back home," he told her, getting up. "I'll get you some extra food. You need a good night's sleep after what happened today."
He stepped forward and licked the top of her head. "I'm just so glad you're okay." His shaky voice hit her deep inside and she watched after him as he turned around and left.
Nala sighed. She'd really messed up. Worse, she'd caused so much worry to her parents. She should have turned around the second she and Simba had rolled into the Elephant Graveyard. If she'd been a bit more assertive, maybe they wouldn't have so narrowly avoided death.
Nala made up her mind that night. Never again would she blindly follow. She swore that she would become a better friend, so she could make Simba a better King one day.
***
My version of what happened with Nala after Mufasa rescued her and Simba from the Graveyard. Nala would have probably been fussed over by her parents and also gotten a stern talking to.
Sarafina here was heavily referenced, and the background as well as Nala's colors were pulled from a screencap from the movie. I used Nala's colors to color match her parents.
If you guys are wondering who the male is, its my version of Nala's father, Asani. He's one of the three lions from "Simba Wants to Play." He is a member of Mufasa's Council.
He's actually very playful and fun in general, but I think he'd be furious and stern when his family would be in danger. His anger here stems from relief, relief that Nala's alive, albeit very shaken up.
My backgrounds absolutely suck even if I'm directly referencing from the film XD
Either ways, I'm loving playing around with Nala's family tree.
Enjoy!
EDIT: The eyes on Asani and Sarafina have been bugging me for weeks so I took care of that. I feel like the scene now feels more together

There’s a book called ‘Simba Wants To Play’?
I should read it and I’ll probably like it!

I really like this idea and it's a good one too! Perhaps you can work on Simba's POV? Because I believe that Mufasa and Sarabi had grounded him too.

That's cool! I also think that the Lion Guard is just a police force...or knights?

That makes sense. In my verse, I actually ship Kopa and Vitani together and they both have a cub named Nkosi II, who is named after Nitza's son who had died when he was barely a teennager from an illness. Kion and Rani have a son who's name is based from Hindu origins. So I'm guessing that Rani's name is Indian or something?

That's a very interesting idea and I'm creating my own original lions since I love East Asian culture and I've decided to create a pride of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean lions. I know that they don't exist, but they're my original race.
Making Vitani a single mother is a good idea! Kovu and Vitani have biological parents named Faraji and Mbali.

Yeah, that's true. My lions hailed all the way through ancient China, where they're descend from the Lion God in Chinese mythology. Their descendants are actually on good terms with Lions from the West, more notablly, Simba's pride. So he was shocked to learn that there were Asiatic Lions. There are a few breeds of Chinese Lions who are living in the mountains.

Amazing work! You captured the expressions and emotions so well, and the BG looks great too (I also struggle)
Really love the dialogue about teaching Nala how to be a better friend and stand up to her friend.. explains a lot why she stands up to Simba later on in the film, very fitting
