In this world the rules of magic are the same, no matter where you are. The six elements in the outer circle are the basics. As such, they have an elemental advantage over one and a disadvantage over another. The arrows indicate the element it has an advantage over. Light and Dark are unique in that they're the only elements that oppose one another. In this regard, they are referred to as the master elements. It should be noted that among the mortal races, mages that use the master elements are a rarity.

It is most common for mages to wield two elements as opposed to one. However, those that use one element can bring it out to its full potential. If you've ever played Pathfinder, this is similar to wizards vs sorcerers. Wizards are more versatile, but sorcerers are the specialists. This is also why Zhang mages are considered so powerful, because they focus on one element.
