Description Okay, I'll admit it; Power Rangers kind of sucks.

This is a revelation I acquired shortly after my failed attempt to attend the 2010 Power Morphicon Convention, in Pasadena, in August 2010. That’s a whole sorted mess I won't get into, despite one magnificent highlight where I saved an old man from strenuous baggage carrying, at the Los Angeles Union Station, while on my way too the miserable event that very morning.

Seriously, nobody should be carrying traveling bags as heavy as cement buckets, and especially at that age, across the great distances within the Union Station.

I didn't have all that much fun at the very first 2007 Power Morphicon either, but again, not going to get into it.

Anyway, there’s a lot I can say about both the American AND original Japanese versions of the Power Ranger (dubbed Super Sentai), namely a lack of story pathos and some rather unneeded comic relief that more often fails then it works.

However, the franchise isn't so horrible that it warrants non-fans to contemplate suicide, in exchange to actually watching a minute of footage from it. And when elements within each individual series / season works, they really do work, like lone characters (and actors) that really stand out above the rest of the cast.

I'd love to get into each season with in-depth reviews, but my thoughts on Power Rangers somewhat echoes the opinions of Linkara’s online video series The History of Power Rangers, which looks at each season with a fairy level-headed critical mind...minus quotes like 'gun-swords are freaking awesome'...which they are of course.

[link]

Even if you hate Power Rangers, it’s still a very interesting web-series to watch, which thankfully condenses fifty episodes worth of individual seasons down to the manageable ‘best of’ entries, along with opinions of overall themes, continuing story threads, and characters of each yearly saga.

But despite all this, if there is one thing about Power Rangers AND its Japanese Super Sentai originators that I will gladly defend and champion to the grave, is its cavalcade of weekly monsters. Or Kaijin; a Japanese term which translates as ‘monster-person’, like the supernatural humanoids of classic Universal horror films, or comic book antagonists of a non-human / inhuman nature.

YES, YES, calm down, I know, I know…the Power Ranger Monsters are a wacky and an out-right ridiculous bunch that even I myself find frustrated with, espeshially when they get TOO extreme in their silliness (Abaranger and Power Rangers Dino-Thunder was not a good year for me). But most of the time these characters are strangely cool, imaginative, and if you get the references and jokes behind the designs, surprisingly cleaver creations.

And if you've been viewing my works for a while now, than you can clearly see that the Power Ranger Monsters, and related villains, have been a major influence on my own original character designs.

Although I've done tons of art featuring these characters in the past (wither they be Kaiju Portraits or Nayzor’s Sleeping Bikinis commissions), I will pay further homage to them through fan-fiction style redesigns! Other artists on DeviantART have done similar pieces before, but I hope to stay true to the humorous spirit of the originals; description wise though, I'll desperately try to keep them mercifully short.

*****************

Pantheon God Sphinx AKA Itassis, from Magiranger and Power Ranger Mystic Force

One of my more recent favorites from the franchise, whose more of a leading villain than a some one-time monster minion.

Sphinx / Itassis was a member of the ten-giants dubbed the Pantheon Gods, who served the evil Underworld lord called N.Ma (AKA The Master in Mystic Force). However, being the wise sage that she was, Sphinx soon realized that N.Ma was more harm than good for the practitioners of black magic, and joined up the good guys to destroy her former master. Sphinx then became the new queen of the reformed Underworld, while her US counterpart, Itassis, also turned towards the light-side, but sadly without the royal upgrade.

My version of Itassis is practically the same as her live action counterparts (because she rocks in either show), but I simplified her original look, and added more personality and soul to her face and eyes, which was originaly a very stiff mask with brightly lit, but expressionless eyes.

Slippery Shark, from Mighty Morphin Power Ranger

Although filmed in Japan, Slippery Shark was produced exclusively for Might Morphin Power Rangers' first season, and was another animal based monster created by the alien craftsman named Finster. And for some strange reason, he was a fully land-based beast, who'd burrowed beneath the ground, with his dorsal fin exposed, ala Jaws.

Candygram anyone?

He later returned as the leader of a small team of other resurrected sea monsters in season two, and this time he actually got into some real lake water. Slippery Shark also has a subtle rivalry / grudge with Tommy the Green Dragonzord Ranger, between the episodes they appeared in together.

My version of the character would have him as a brutal space pirate, employed by the villains to attack the Power Rangers. And is as lethal on dry land, as he is in the water. The rest of his crew would also be composed of ocean-based animal monsters from seasons one and two, such as Commander Crayfish and Pirantishead.

Bara Snoring AKA Somni-Bot, from Ohranger and Power Rangers Zeo

Sleep inducing, and equally narcoleptic robot from the Machine Empire, whose been sent forth to destroy our heroes, despite the fact that she's so utterly adorable! Sadly, the Power Rangers don't hesitate in destroying Somni-Bot, and although she is quickly rebuilt in a less cute form for a counterattack, the 'good guys' anilities her once and for all.

MY version of Somni-Bot would have her on the run from the Machine Empire, who despite their anti-organic-life doctrine, openly treat their own kind terribly (story elements taken from Ohranger), especially the lesser commoners who can't effectively serve the Royal House of Gadgetry. The Power Rangers take pity on the wayward robot, and with the added assistance of punk friends Bulk and Skull, rent a spot at a self-storage facility, where Somni-Bot now sleeps in peace.

Dora Skeleton AKA Bones, from Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Living skeleton created by Finster, from season one, who had the ability to create his own magical dimension to battle opponents within, along with his own group of henchmen (unnamed skeleton men), among other weird powers (like what appears to be a green 'laser-rapier').

My version on Bones is more-or-less the same, but I made him a real skeleton, similar to the ones from Army of Darkness and Ray Harryhausen's classic output. However, he still gets to wear the snazzy fedora and cape...because that's just freaking awesome!

Big thanks to for introducing me to The History of Power Rangers

Next Up in the 2010 Halloween Uploads: an exceptionally sexy re-imagining of The Little Shop of Horrors...and yes, its going to be one of THOSE illustrations.

I'd be tempted, but have enough paid commission work as it is, and wouldn't be free until some of these are taken care of first, especially if this is a free request.

Sorry to tell you this DisneyHater, since you've been such a loyal fan of my works, and I hope I haven't sadden you with this reply?

I can do PayPal to, I'm just saying that I have some other commission customers to take care of first. And again, my prices are cheap or negotiable.

Can you put requested movies and TV shows on DVD-R maybe? Or have a lot of Power Ranger / tokusatsu on VHS that I can have and convert DVD-R copies from?

No, and the only one I got on DVD is the zyuranger series, but I don't post videos either.

Thank you very much! Its nice to meet another PR / Sentai monster fan, though the sheer number of them per year does become a little blurring.

Out of curiosity, any particular favorite you might have?

Very nice drawings! Personally I think season 3 and Lost Galaxy have the best designs of monsters, you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Enshohma In reply to Nayzor [2010-11-02 04:12:18 +0000 UTC]

I think "Lost Galaxy" / "Gingaman" was successful in the monster department is because of the variety between its four armies (insect bikers, robot warriors, mystical women, and feudal Japan sea life), and all were relatively simplistic in their designs. The warrior robots in particular are some of the better mechanical foes of Super Sentai and Power Rangers, with all of them tough and serious opponents; a far cry from the fairy tale clockwork of "Zeo" / "Ohranger", or the junkyard silliness of "RPM" / "Go-Onger"

I think the third season monsters work better in they're original "Kakuranger" context, of ancient Yokai (Japanese folklore monsters) updating themselves for modern times. Otherwise, they seem like more cartoon nonsense from Lord Zedd, Rita and Finster. But even with that said, I have some favorites, like Blue Globbor, Kat Monster, and Crabby Cabby.

Cool and here's a fun fact. The Kat Monster's name is officially Katastrophe. It came out in a script.

Enshohma In reply to Nayzor [2010-11-03 02:03:32 +0000 UTC]

I’ve always been hesitant to use that name, mostly because it seems too much like fan-fiction dribble…but if it comes from a script, I’ll accept it…though where did you get that information?

Nayzor In reply to Enshohma [2010-11-03 02:27:10 +0000 UTC]

A few years ago they had an auction of numerous monster costumes. Katastrophe was one of them. So was the pumpkin monster from Invasion of the Ranger Snatchers. His name is Pumpkin Sorcerer.

I freakin's love this! They all look great. While you held the original designs intact, your own personal touch made them really shine out.

And I agree that in abaranger/dino thunder there were a lot of silly monsters, but they had a few good ones too. Those trinoids were the silly ones with their mixed up plant/animal object design, but the giganoids had better designs most of the time.

But worse then abaranger were the turbo era monsters. I know carranger was supposed to be more of a parody but most of the monsters were too plain silly. Sometimes so silly they were likable, but most of them were crappy. If they were supposed to be a biker gang/pirate crew to begin with, they aren't doing a really good job to be intimidating. Someone should try to redesign them to look less silly or something...

Either way, i love how you drew each of these guys and you paid great respect to the ranger designs while still make the monsters stand out from their counterparts. Keep up the good work!

The great Knd6 speaks!

You basically nailed it on the head, about me giving them my won personal touch, while remaining true to the originals; again, other artists have done similar redesigns, but either missed the point, or gone too far by making them real inhuman monsters, that clash with the more humorous details.

After being told off by several "Abaranger" fans, I still stick to my opinions, as the Trinoids' plant / animal / machine combos almost never worked, and just offered a walking mess design wise.

But I will give props to most of the Giganoids, who were quite awesome looking giants, particularly that green armored plant warrior Giganoid #11: Immortal / Jade Gladiator, and the Phoenix inspired Giganoid #9: Miracle.

Yes, "Carranger" / "Turbo" had some real stinkers, even in the original context of a self-referencing comedy series, but unlike the Trinoids, those 'ugly-human caricature' bikers were at least simplistic looking.

I do plan on tackling some of the "Carranger" / "Turbo" later, or at least my guilty pleasure dubbed Mad Mike the Pizza Monster (forgot his Japanese name).

I'm sorry to hear your trip wasn't as fun as you'd hoped, Ensohma. It always sucks when you have a crummy time at a special event, because that just makes it EXTRA crummy. But enough about that, on to the art work!

I like your take on Sphinx, like you said it's basically just her, but with more soul and personality. I imagine this is what she'd have looked like if they hadn't had to make her face an actual mask. The shark I know nothing about, but Dora Skeleton is one of my (relatively few) faves from Zyuranger. But why didn't you mention his explosive eyeball-shooting powers? Maybe that's just in the Japanese version, then. And of course, Bara Snoring looks utterly lovable in your style. Or rather, more than usual. Seriously guys, we get like 3 sympathetic villain kaijin in Ohranger, and yet she's not one of them? Phuh!

Now I've got to disagree with you on the Abaranger kaijin, as they happen to be among my favorites from the entire franchise. Although that could be due to my immense love of wordplay. But whenever I need to convince someone of the brilliance of Japanese tokusatsu costume design, it's the costumes from Abaranger that I use as my exhibit A. Pretty much all the kaijin from the mid-90's to today have been great, but in my mind, the Trinoids and Giganoids (and yes, the one Hekanoid, too) are the epitome of creativity and exquisite detail.

Enshohma In reply to DrZock [2010-11-02 05:30:00 +0000 UTC]

Always great to hear from you Dr Zock; please stop by more often.

Power Ranger fans are a strange, if not rude lot, and despite some friendly faces, I came close to beating the snot out of others...argh, never mind - I helped an old man from killing himself, and that's all that matters. Thanks for your sympathy though!

It would be great if the creature effects on Super Sentai allotted for more expressive animatronics, puppetry, and special FX make-up, but in the last couple of years, its been rather bland rubber faces, with barely moving lips (and I miss blinking eyes on the Ultraman monsters). I loved the Pantheon Gods / Ten Terrors a lot, but they are exhibit A in this execution flaw, and with Sphinx / Itassis being such an awesome gal, I really wanted to give her that expressive edge.

I'm actually a huge fan of the "Zyuranger" monsters for their appealing simplicity and mythological backgrounds, which I've only come to appreciate recently by acquiring the entire series through a friend on DVD-R. Despite this, Dora Skeleton is one of the stronger, more fearsome monsters of the series; so much so, that I feel a little guilty for slimming him down Harryhausen-style. I forgot about the eye-bombs, though I do remember they were more like laser-fireballs.

Japan has a weird tradition of making overly cute villains who are supposedly evil, and frankly it rarely works, especially in a lot of anime (though that clockwork 'Disney princess' android from "Sailor Moon" was pretty nifty). Bara Snoring fits into that category, but thankfully unlike other such villains, she's not too evil, and thus is likeable enough to love. I agree, they created such an adorable robot that was perfect for sympathetic antagonist status, which even "Power Rangers" failed to use. And yet Kabuki Novice became the basis for a very special "E.T." style Christmas episodes...the Hell?!?!

The whole idea of the royal family mistreating their own robotic minions would have made for some great story fodder (some kind of Baranoia peasant uprising), but as you said, not a lot was made from it.

My problem with the "Abaranger" monsters is that they were too complicated, particularly the Trinoids whose mixture of plant, animal and machine parts, made them look more like walking garage messes, than imaginative monsters. They're might be some cleaver in-joke within the Trinoids, but its the kind of tokusatsu monster I don't want to use in defense of the genre. Creative yes, but greatly unfocused creations.

But I will give credit where credit is due, and admit that there were a lot of great designs among the far more opposing Giganoids, who should have been the template for the Evolians' Wicked Life Forms, especially since they seem to match the main villains better, appearance wise. The Giganoids dubbed Immortal, Miracle, and Hero are my top favorites in this regard.

And I have to admit, for a monster made of multiple elements beyond the basic Trinoid three, HanaBikiNikiBinasu was actually a good design; wacky but unified and simplistically appealing in doing so...and no, I'm not just saying that because she had a decent rack
