Description Okay, I'll admit it; Power Rangers kind of sucks.

This is a revelation I acquired shortly after my failed attempt to attend the 2010 Power Morphicon Convention, in Pasadena, in August 2010. That’s a whole sorted mess I won't get into, despite one magnificent highlight where I saved an old man from strenuous baggage carrying, at the Los Angeles Union Station, while on my way too the miserable event that very morning.

Seriously, nobody should be carrying traveling bags as heavy as cement buckets, and especially at that age, across the great distances within the Union Station.

I didn't have all that much fun at the very first 2007 Power Morphicon either, but again, not going to get into it.

Anyway, there’s a lot I can say about both the American AND original Japanese versions of the Power Ranger (dubbed Super Sentai), namely a lack of story pathos and some rather unneeded comic relief that more often fails then it works.

However, the franchise isn't so horrible that it warrants non-fans to contemplate suicide, in exchange to actually watching a minute of footage from it. And when elements within each individual series / season works, they really do work, like lone characters (and actors) that really stand out above the rest of the cast.

I'd love to get into each season with in-depth reviews, but my thoughts on Power Rangers somewhat echoes the opinions of Linkara’s online video series The History of Power Rangers, which looks at each season with a fairy level-headed critical mind...minus quotes like 'gun-swords are freaking awesome'...which they are of course.

[link]

Even if you hate Power Rangers, it’s still a very interesting web-series to watch, which thankfully condenses fifty episodes worth of individual seasons down to the manageable ‘best of’ entries, along with opinions of overall themes, continuing story threads, and characters of each yearly saga.

But despite all this, if there is one thing about Power Rangers AND its Japanese Super Sentai originators that I will gladly defend and champion to the grave, is its cavalcade of weekly monsters. Or Kaijin; a Japanese term which translates as ‘monster-person’, like the supernatural humanoids of classic Universal horror films, or comic book antagonists of a non-human / inhuman nature.

YES, YES, calm down, I know, I know…the Power Ranger Monsters are a wacky and an out-right ridiculous bunch that even I myself find frustrated with, espeshially when they get TOO extreme in their silliness (Abaranger and Power Rangers Dino-Thunder was not a good year for me). But most of the time these characters are strangely cool, imaginative, and if you get the references and jokes behind the designs, surprisingly cleaver creations.

And if you've been viewing my works for a while now, than you can clearly see that the Power Ranger Monsters, and related villains, have been a major influence on my own original character designs.

Although I've done tons of art featuring these characters in the past (wither they be Kaiju Portraits or Nayzor’s Sleeping Bikinis commissions), I will pay further homage to them through fan-fiction style redesigns! Other artists on DeviantART have done similar pieces before, but I hope to stay true to the humorous spirit of the originals; description wise though, I'll desperately try to keep them mercifully short.

*****************

Pantheon God Sphinx AKA Itassis, from Magiranger and Power Ranger Mystic Force

One of my more recent favorites from the franchise, whose more of a leading villain than a some one-time monster minion.

Sphinx / Itassis was a member of the ten-giants dubbed the Pantheon Gods, who served the evil Underworld lord called N.Ma (AKA The Master in Mystic Force). However, being the wise sage that she was, Sphinx soon realized that N.Ma was more harm than good for the practitioners of black magic, and joined up the good guys to destroy her former master. Sphinx then became the new queen of the reformed Underworld, while her US counterpart, Itassis, also turned towards the light-side, but sadly without the royal upgrade.

My version of Itassis is practically the same as her live action counterparts (because she rocks in either show), but I simplified her original look, and added more personality and soul to her face and eyes, which was originaly a very stiff mask with brightly lit, but expressionless eyes.

Slippery Shark, from Mighty Morphin Power Ranger

Although filmed in Japan, Slippery Shark was produced exclusively for Might Morphin Power Rangers' first season, and was another animal based monster created by the alien craftsman named Finster. And for some strange reason, he was a fully land-based beast, who'd burrowed beneath the ground, with his dorsal fin exposed, ala Jaws.

Candygram anyone?

He later returned as the leader of a small team of other resurrected sea monsters in season two, and this time he actually got into some real lake water. Slippery Shark also has a subtle rivalry / grudge with Tommy the Green Dragonzord Ranger, between the episodes they appeared in together.

My version of the character would have him as a brutal space pirate, employed by the villains to attack the Power Rangers. And is as lethal on dry land, as he is in the water. The rest of his crew would also be composed of ocean-based animal monsters from seasons one and two, such as Commander Crayfish and Pirantishead.

Bara Snoring AKA Somni-Bot, from Ohranger and Power Rangers Zeo

Sleep inducing, and equally narcoleptic robot from the Machine Empire, whose been sent forth to destroy our heroes, despite the fact that she's so utterly adorable! Sadly, the Power Rangers don't hesitate in destroying Somni-Bot, and although she is quickly rebuilt in a less cute form for a counterattack, the 'good guys' anilities her once and for all.

MY version of Somni-Bot would have her on the run from the Machine Empire, who despite their anti-organic-life doctrine, openly treat their own kind terribly (story elements taken from Ohranger), especially the lesser commoners who can't effectively serve the Royal House of Gadgetry. The Power Rangers take pity on the wayward robot, and with the added assistance of punk friends Bulk and Skull, rent a spot at a self-storage facility, where Somni-Bot now sleeps in peace.

Dora Skeleton AKA Bones, from Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Living skeleton created by Finster, from season one, who had the ability to create his own magical dimension to battle opponents within, along with his own group of henchmen (unnamed skeleton men), among other weird powers (like what appears to be a green 'laser-rapier').

My version on Bones is more-or-less the same, but I made him a real skeleton, similar to the ones from Army of Darkness and Ray Harryhausen's classic output. However, he still gets to wear the snazzy fedora and cape...because that's just freaking awesome!

Big thanks to for introducing me to The History of Power Rangers

Next Up in the 2010 Halloween Uploads: an exceptionally sexy re-imagining of The Little Shop of Horrors...and yes, its going to be one of THOSE illustrations.

Bara Snoring/Somnibot looks utterly lovable in your style. Or rather, more than usual. Seriously, we get like 3 sympathetic monsters in Ohranger, and yet she's not one of them? Phuh! >

Barbara can still voice Somnibot, and has very fond memories of playing the character. She even loves how, in my fanfics, Somnibot or "Somni" for short) is using her sleep-inducing powers and her singing to help others.

When you get to Sominbot and Itassis to our series theyu will be wooderful! I think my favorite for Zeo and Mystic Force to come are Archerina and Necrolai sleeping next to her daughter Leelee. Nai and Mei from Magiranger will be nice too!

I'm going to upload the long awaited Lipsyncher combo during the Christmas break, but based on your compliments, I think Archerina will be my next big stand alone piece, simply because she's so hot for a non-human looking robot, and I'm bound to get a lot of views if I do her picture just right.

As usual, pay me for Lipsyncher after she's done and submitted here.

Oh you most certainly will; I have a Mad Mike (from "PR Turbo") and Icy Angel ("PR Lost Galaxy") pieces already completed, but contemplating wither they should be combined together, or poster separately.

Also, in case you are a Power Rangers fan; do you know what happened with the premier of "Power Rangers Samurai"?

I know Nickelodeon has a long history of bad scheduling with their own shows, but the second episode instead of the actual first, why?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IronBloodAika In reply to Enshohma [2011-02-08 21:22:00 +0000 UTC]

No idea why they did that. I don't know why a show would air a series like Power Rangers out of chronological order.

I'd say keep them separate unless you have more redesigns. If you do, you can make a piece like this one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Enshohma In reply to IronBloodAika [2011-02-13 03:39:38 +0000 UTC]

My hope is that they do eventually air the first episode, because it isn't even my On Demand cable option.

After thinking it through, I'm going to have to combined the two images, simply to continue the series with part two, and because the re-designs are on hold for the moment (mind you, the moment). However, after finding out how many Icy Angel fans that are out there, I won't let Mad Mike out stage her in the combo.

BTW, any PR monsters or villains you'd like to see me take a pass at in the re-designs?

IronBloodAika In reply to Enshohma [2011-02-13 03:52:45 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...I can think of a few that I remember the most. King Sphinx for one. He was seen the most out of Rita's other monsters in the toy commercials if I recall. Terror Toad (hat guy gave me nightmares as a kid) Madam Woe, Shellshocker (made by Squatt and Baboo of all people), Finster (favorite monster maker), Scorpina (Why didn't they bring her back?), Eye Guy, Soccadillo, Pudgy Pig, and Oysterizer. Those the ones I remember the most as a kid.

Enshohma In reply to IronBloodAika [2011-05-12 09:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Man, you've named many of my favorites from season one; I love the monsters of that time for their simplicity and mythological backgrounds, which was more apparent in the Japanese series "Zyuranger". From what I understand, King Sphinx was originally supposed to get a much bigger role in "Power Rangers", especially considering he had a human form in "Zyurangers" and last two episodes. However, as is the case with a lot of PR villain NOT making return engagements, the suit for Dora Sphinx / King Sphinx was in terrible shape.

With Scorpina, there was a conscious effort to bring her back in season two, but those plans fell by the waste-side. I go into full detail on Scorpina here:

[link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IronBloodAika In reply to Enshohma [2011-05-12 16:20:15 +0000 UTC]

I always wondered how those suits can get so messed up so quickly. Maybe it's all the sparks from the fights or something.

Maybe someday she'll return, having either avoided the Z-Wave or having been turned good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Enshohma In reply to IronBloodAika [2011-05-13 20:55:59 +0000 UTC]

Monster suits in Japanese tokusatsu always go though the rounds, with said explosions (sparks) and stunt work (notice the decay of the Godzilla suit used from "Destroy All Monsters" (1968) to "Godzilla vs. Gigan" (1972)). And this is well before they are shipped off to America or New Zealand.

In the past, I'd be cynical on the possibility of old villains returning from past Sentai and Power Ranger seasons...BUT, considering the current nature of "Pirate Task Force Gokaiger", its more than likely Lami / Scorpina might come back...MIGHT.

No, with the possible exception of Turbanshell, since he's based on a sea snail.

But I was really thinking of Goo Fish, Commander Crayfish, Pirantishead and Oysterizer; again, sticking to the "A Real Fish Story" style monster casting of that said episode.

CrazyGamerDragon64 [2010-11-09 23:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Interesting re-designs, I used to love MMPR when I was a kid and I started watching the series a bit again during Lightspeed Rescue's run. I have to disagree with you on Dino Thunder though, that one was by far my favorite of all the seasons, it was like Mighty Morphin' for the new generation, although I do agree, most of the monsters were pretty lame, the only monsters I liked from that season were the White Terrorsaurus, Ruby Dragon and the Ugly Monster, oh and the two generals that Lothor brought with him from the Abyss of Evil (they're the ones based off the two monster makers from Abaranger)

If you're taking suggestions of re-designs, I'd love to see re-designs of the monsters I just mentioned, any of the monsters from Lightspeed Rescue or Mystic Force and any of the monsters that Moltor used in "Operation Overdrive"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Enshohma In reply to CrazyGamerDragon64 [2010-11-10 18:33:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a huge fan of Dino-Thunder,/i> for a variety of reason, beyond the silly monsters, like the rather unfocused nature of the series (especially its lead villains), and some of the strange production and acting direction left over from the admittedly inferior Ninja Storm. You bring up a very good point about it trying to recapture the original season days, and its works in that regards, but it was still a little too high school for my tastes, even with some stand out episodes (Lost and Found In Translation and Fighting Spirit).

The unfortunate thing about Lightspeed Rescue demons and the Jaryuu Clan / Moltor's guys is that they're already too awesome to really re-design, but if I do, I'll lean more towards the former demons.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CrazyGamerDragon64 In reply to Enshohma [2010-11-11 20:11:33 +0000 UTC]

I think that's the reason why I like Dino Thunder, it's kind of how the newest generation of High School students act, it seems more realistic in that sense, I liked Lost and Found In Translation because it's like the PR characters are getting the chance to see their world through OUR (the viewers') eyes and they even make fun of the monster from that episode, Connor even saying "Oh come on! THat's clearly a guy in a suit!" I kind of liked the acting on the heroes' part, it was neat seeing Tommy come back too, but I agree with you the villains were a little sloppily presented, Zeltrax could have been a great character if they had further developed his relationship to Tommy and Mesogog is kind of weird (but I think that was their point, he's supposed to be this emotion-less, calculating creature who eventually starts to lose his sanity towards the end of the series)

Yeah, say what you want about Super Sentai/Power Rangers, they really seem to have a never ending supply on monsters.

Nice redesigns, I especially like Dora Skeleton/Bones, I remember he creeped me out as a kid watching Power Rangers.

Heh, candygram, nice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Enshohma In reply to Wyote [2010-11-02 01:24:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm grateful for the endless stream of monsters from the show, which have always been there when Godzilla and Ultraman have not. However, unlike those aforementioned franchise, it nearly impossible for Super Sentai / Power Rangers to establish returning favorites, beyond a handful of the lead villains from recent, individual seasons.

In fact, I wish the Japanese side of the franchise would take at least a six month break, for a much need creative break; Power Rangers being off the air for over a year seems to be something of a blessing in disguise.

Bones, as well as almost all the "Zyuranger" monsters, are among my top favorites, for their appealing simplicity and mythological backgrounds. But I got to admit, Bones' original suit was quite good in its own right, and didn't really need my redesign, which is basically a regular skeleton raiding his wardrobe. On an added positive note, Bones briefly turned giant size in one of the American Power Ranger comics, so good news for his fans there.

Glad you got the SNL reference
