Yeah before we lock down a design direction we mainly focus on monochrome passes of a concept, removing color as a distraction and proving out a design that doesn't depend on a color splash for readability.
This saves a lot of time at the start and usually makes for a stronger character read in the end! (It's also my favorite part of development as I get to fek around with a bunch of ideas!
This was me trying to capture a slight hint of an emo vibe for Varus! He's such a tortured soul!

That's very interesting. But it makes sense in order to look at the character for their features and not all the colors and other distractions.
You certainly evoked a very emotional side of Varus, and in a very good way, I think. It adds depth to him instead of being such a killer fighter, you can also see into him as a character, and person, if you will.
Nicely done. I look forward to seeing what you will do next!
