Daniyah walked the beach. It was a calm, barely windy day that still had a feeling of summer, though it was already september. No one was at the beach besides her, and nothing hinted at the massacre that had been happening just a few miles further south from Portereo. Queen Abrienne had sent her to analyze the situation, and here she was waiting for her ship to the isles of Aquamarine. She needed a bit time for herself, so she had told her troup to wait in the harbor while Daniyah walked in loneliness... no, she wasn't.
There actually was someone. Daniyah frowned. Light hair – perhaps white hair? Was that a Rotheran? Maybe even one of those who had attacked Aquamarine...? But when she hurried closer to the man kneeling in the sand, she saw he was actually blond. When he heard her, he turned over. Light grey eyes – he was human. A friendly but slightly scared face, she noted when he hastily stood up and grabbed for the black jacket that lay beside him.
"Pardon me, I did not mean to frighten you", she said, raising her hand in an appeasing gesture.
The man calmed a bit. "Greetings. What is a Lady like you doing out here alone?"
Daniyah laughed. "I'm not a Lady at all! I am Captain Oamra of the Royal Guard!"
A stare of disbelief, he glanced the flower brooch at her collar. "The Royal Guard of Avalonne?" Suddenly, he laughed. "May I have a look at your sword, please?"
Daniyah frowned. What a strange question... but he did not seem like a thief. She loosened the sword belt and handed it over to him.
The blonde man pulled the sword out of the scabbard only for a few inches, studying the jewels decorating the knob. A smile flickered on his face. As if he knew the sword... but he wasn't a Royal Guard, was he? Daniyah took a look at his jacket. Black, with red embellishments – it did actually have some similarities with a uniform jacket.
Meanwhile, the man beheld the scabbard, made of steel and blue velvet, studded with small iron plates. Those plates were engraved with the names of the captains of the Royal Guard, all of them. The bottom one held the name "Daniyah Oamra", but the man looked at the first one. A melancholic expression on his face, he gave the sword and scabbard back. "What do you know about this sword?"
Daniyah could have asked him the same... "As far as I know, it's property of the Guard for two hundred years", she said, hesitating. "It has always been the Captain's sword. They tell a tale about a guard who lost his family in a war and then ran off to Rothere to help himself out of his desperation by matters of black magic. They say he left the sword behind, and since then..."
"Since then, it's always been property of the castle", he completed, his thoughts far away.
"So, how do you know it?", Daniyah demanded. But right then, a call made them look up.
"Ivander!" About three hundred feet away, there stood a young lad with black hair, waving over to the blonde man. "Ivander, are you coming? We have to leave!"
"Pardon me, Captain", the man bowed to her, threw his jacket over his shoulder and ran to the young man.
Daniyah took a look at the scabbard. The first name was barely readable, the surname was already smoothed out. There was only to read "Ivander". Daniyah looked up. The blond man and his young companion were already gone.

Much of talk, little of story... Ivander is a bit down because of the thought to fight his former home.
