All of my friends say nationalism is stupid, irrational and starts wars.

well it can, but when it is again, extremist lol. if one was apathetic toward the nation one would not promote the bettering of a people as a whole: then one would be left to an apathetic, close to anarchic state. light doses of nationalism help keep order in larg groups. and it gives a source of pride which everyone desires or ese the concept would not exist nor be considered positive lol.
but as with anywhere, there is always plenty not to love. nationalism can be simply about love//liking what is good, not everything lol.

Those are good points. Nationalism on a certain level can help to keep things together in a time of conflict (assuimg it was caused my something other than extreem nationalism, such as economies or neighboring dictators). It can also be used to great effect, for better or for worse, in political campaigns.

yes exactly. it is similar to chocolate. chocolate in overly large amounts are not exactly the best for one's health, but one can also not deny the antioxidants and other beneficial properties of it. /shrug.
