A roleplay between
Seymour

Patagonia

Seymour followed his handler quietly through the bustling market. He stayed close to her side, careful to not put any tension on the leash that kept him close to her. He wasn't quite sure why she had brought him along to do something so mediocre but he supposed it would help him become more familiar with the area in the process so he wasn't going to complain.

Nadine, his handler, smiled and talked to him. She called this place a 'farmer's market'. So this was the infamous farming area he had caught a glimpse of when he first arrived? Many scents filled his nostrils, cooking meat and vegetables but raw meat as well. There was the odor of smoke and exhaust from large plowing machines in the distance. He stayed quiet, glancing up at Nadine every once in a while to make sure she was okay. Nadine came to a halt in front of a little stand that was selling various meats. From what he could smell there was squirrel, rabbit, and some other creature he wasn't quite acquainted with?

Nadine bent down and unclipped his leash from the metal ring that hung from his olive-colored collar. "Go have some fun boy, but behave yourself." she said, giving him a loving pat on the head before going to talk to the person who stood behind the counter of meats. Seymour turned around, looking out to all the people who went about their day relatively happily. He could smell other dogs around but wasn't quite sure where to start looking for someone to socialize with. He hadn't met anyone from the farming group as of yet. He wondered how they acted, if they had similar traits to the dog he was and his brothers and sisters in arms. He had only heard the gossip in his own faction and so far he had only heard very little of it. Maybe they were somedogs he could get along with.

~~~
The summer sun pierced through the clear June sky, blasting the farmer's market with thick, sticky air. The summer was quite miserable to Patagonia, who had become accustomed to AC. But there was no air conditioning out here; the only way to escape the sun was by wiggling under Harvey's table and plopping down in the shade.
The beagle had just managed to get comfortable beneath the table of meats when she saw a pair of feet and paws approaching. "Mornin'," Harvey said, reaching out a hand to greet the customers.
With a yawn, Patagonia crawled out from beneath the table and stretched her legs, looking over the customers with half-lidded eyes. "Is that one yours?" She asked the dog, jerking her head towards his handler. "Are you her pet?" If he was a pet, perhaps he'd seen Cardigan recently...
~~~

Seymour watched as Nadine went to greet the person behind the counter. He watched after her carefully before his thoughts were distracted by the voice of a small beagle who had emerged from beneath the vendor's table. She had appeared to be hiding from the sun that beat down on them. While his coat was dark, he was accustomed to the heat from his time overseas.

"Yes she's mine. She's my handler, I'm in the service." he explained to the small brown dog. "I'm Seymour, what might your name be?" he asked calmly. So far the farming faction seemed friendly. He examined her, she had a multi-color piece of cloth around her neck. Something he assumed was meant to replace a collar in his world? Her coat was a light ginger color with white blotches and she had a dark-tipped tail. He hadn't seen a dog like this in a while. There was a few he served with years ago whose impeccable sense of smell had aided in narcotics and ticker detection. He pondered on whether she had ever done anything like that.

~~~
"See-more?" Patagonia responded, stretching out the syllables. "Ever met a blind dog, Seymour? I bet she'd set you up with a real nice pun." Trotting forward, she gave the black and tan dog a sniff. "Patagonia," she said, finally answering the dog's question. "I'm a hunter. You're in service? Service for what?" Perhaps he was a part of the new faction in town -- the Military Faction. She'd heard about it, but had yet to meet one of the newcomers. Perhaps he'd be able to elaborate on what his faction did, exactly.
~~~

Seymour listened, amused by her pun. "I've never met a blind dog," he responded, one brow raised slightly. "Nice to meet you Patagonia," he replied. Ahh, a hunter. That made sense. A dog with a nose like that would make tracking now prey easy, or at least that's what Seymour believed.
"I serve in the military. Have been since I was little. I just arrived not to this lil' town not to long ago." he explained. Sometimes he forgot that a lot of people didn't quite know what he meant when he said he was in the service.
It was easy to get caught in a military mindset and forget what it was like to be a civilian. Seymour gave the beagle a sniff in return, the smell of various meats and what he assumed to be her owner on her coat.

~~~
"That's too bad," Patagonia replied. "She's a sweet pup. How's service, though? I thought you military dogs were supposed to be stone cold and stoic. But you don't seem to bad." She looked over Seymour, taking in his huge size and build. Perhaps he was a guard dog or something; he certainly looked like he'd be on the physical side of things. After all, dogs like him were bred for their muscle -- at least, that's what she'd heard.
~~~

Seymour squinted, he hadn't realized she was talking about a specific blind dog. Perhaps she was friends with one? He gave a hearty chuckle at her comment on military dogs. "We can be when we need to," he replied. "I serve here as a grunt for now. I've only just arrived, like I said, so I plan on making my way through the ranks and hopefully being put on patrol duty since it's what I'm good at. Unless your town needs some tickers found." he explained.
"So you said you hunted?" he spoke, glancing at the table full of meats where his handler stood, still talking with Patagonia's owner. "Are you the one who claimed all of that meat?" he asked.
He wondered how she had managed to take down all of that since she was such a small dog. Surely the rabbits would have been hard to catch, especially with how quickly they can flee. Seymour had tried catching them before but had failed at every attempt. He assumed it was because he was big and heavy, to slow for them. Maybe with her small size she was more zippy than he could be.

~~~
"I helped catch it," Patagonia said with a shrug, acting like it had been easy for her. "I can track down anything. Deer, rabbits, squirrels... anything." The beagle stood in her hind legs and leaned against the table, looking over all the meat she'd tracked down. "I find them, and he shoots them," she explained. "But sometimes they don't die right away, so I have to track them down again. It's easy, though -- for me at least. After all, I do have the best nose in Canidale." Ah, there it was. Typical Patagonia.
~~~

Seymour listened intently. Ah so deer had been the meat he couldn't quite identify at first. The hunting method she explained sounded very efficient. It was obviously so from the haul they had brought in.
He sensed a bit of egotism in her next statement but brushed it off for the moment. Usually a statement like that would warrant a sharp remark on his part but since he didn't know her that well and wanted to try and make some friends here, he bit his tongue.

In the distance he could hear the chatter of a squirrel. He stood up, his eyes now trained on the oak tree sat in in the distance. He wasn't sure why the tiny creatures invoked such a raging anger in him but he always felt like they were mocking him; not to mention that their incessant noise was always annoying. He glanced back at Nadine, if only for a second, to see if she was going to try and stop him from taking after the little rodent but she didn't seem to care, as she continued to visit and talk with Patagonia's owner.
His hackles raised, he let out a quiet 'boof' as if trying not to alert the squirrel of his presence. Not yet, anyways.

~~~
Patagonia had just opened her mouth to continue bragging about her hunt when she noticed Seymour's attention drift to something else. Following his gaze, the beagle spotted a bushy-tailed creature scurrying through the branches of an oak tree. A squirrel.
"Do you see that?" She whispered. Of course he did. That's what he was looking at. But oh, how she wished he hadn't noticed. She wanted that squirrel, and she wanted it to herself.
~~~

Seymour's muscles tensed as he prepared to take off. Patagonia had said something but he was to focused at this point to listen to what she had said. He pushed himself forward, ripping some of the grass up in clumps as he flew forward.
The squirrel was now alerted to his presence as he bounded towards the bushy-tailed creature at full speed. The oak tree grew ever closer to him and he could practically feel the squirrel's fluffy body in his jaws now.
Nadine flung around as she saw a black and tan blur fly by her. She gave an exasperated sigh when she saw the squirrel clambering from branch to branch in an attempt to get away from the hulk of muscle flinging himself at it. She hadn't told him to stay so really it was her fault; they were still working on his squirrel issues.

~~~
As soon as the beagle saw Seymour take off, she kicked into high gear and zoomed after him. She raced towards the oak tree right on his heels. When Patagonia finally reached the trunk of the tree, she leapt against it and let out a loud baroo!
"It's mine!" She howled. "My faction, my squirrel!" Over and over, she leapt against the tree and clawed at its bark. "Just wait 'til it gets down there! It's all mine!"
~~~

Somehow the little beagle managed to get ahead of him and reached the tree before he did. When he did arrive he leapt up as high as he could, slamming against the trunk of the tree. It's sturdy bark held fast as the squirrel scrambled to the next tree, leaping to a outstretched branch.
Seymour didn't bother to say anything to Patagonia's protests. He would be getting this squirrel, he was sure of it.

The next tree wasn't as sturdy as the oak it had been sheltered in before.  Seymour threw himself against it, the branches shaking and few leaves drifting to the ground. The squirrel held on for dear life but slipped and fell to the ground. It's mine.
Seymour was just about to pounce on the squirrel when Nadine's voice rung over the meadow, calling for Seymour.
"Seymour, come!" she commanded.
Seymour stopped in his tracks undecidedly. Nadine repeated herself and he gave an irritable huff.
"Today's your lucky day, pest." he spoke, a small growl escaping his maw before he turned around and bounded back to his handler. The squirrel scrambled away as quickly as he could, leaving his acorn behind.

~~~
Patagonia had took off after the squirrel just a bit later that Seymour, and had ended up behind him when the male suddenly came to a halt. The beagle put on her brakes as quickly as she could, tumbling head over heels with an oomph. By the time she returned to her paws, both the squirrel and Seymour had ran off.
"That stupid mongrel!" She huffed, turning and racing towards Seymour. She let out a growl and gave the rottweiler a growl. "You big beast!" She snarled. "I could've caught that squirrel if it wasn't for you! You could've caught it if you weren't some brainwashed military mutt that listens to everything his human says! You ever think for yourself?"
~~~

Seymour came to a halt next to Nadine, the beagle howling insults behind him.

"Now stay and behave yourself." Nadine commanded before turning back to the vendor. "Sorry about that..."

Her voice trailed off when Patagonia approached him, furious at him for 'losing the squirrel'. "Yeah, I do. And here's what I think. Back off pipsqueak. I'll listen to my orders if I darn well please. Looks like you could use some discipline yourself." He retorted, sitting straight up, gazing down at the small hunting dog.
Well he thought this was going well; that he was making a new friend. Leave it to squirrels to ruin everything for him.

~~~
"Pipsqueak?!" Patagonia said in outrage. "Just because you're a big ol' ball of fleas doesn't mean I'm a pipsqueak." The beagle couldn't help it; she let out a loud baroo to let him know just how she felt.
"Pata! Hush up, y'hear? I can't understand a word this here woman's sayin'."
Now, she wasn't about to disobey Harvey, but she wasn't about to let Seymour think that she was brainwashed. So Patagonia let out just onemore short and quiet howls
"You could've had something other than stale kibbles for once in your life, but you just had to give up the squirrel." She fixed Seymour with a frown.
~~~

Seymour stared off into the distance, listening to beagle's protests detachedly. He wondered when he would finally be able to leave this place but if there was one thing he knew, his handler was a talker. And a big one. So he'd probably be here a bit longer.

With her last howls he turned back to her, wondering if the squirrel was really that important. Dont get him wrong, he wanted to capture it and rip it to shreds just as badly as she did. But despite the objections he had had to a new handler when he first arrived, he was beginning to settle back into his normal state of following orders. A squirrel wasn't worth the trust he had built up with Nadine so far.

He licked his chops, some drool dripping down from his droopy lips.
"Look, Patagonia," he paused, trying to word his next statement carefully. She obviously got fired up about things that weren't really worth it, not that he was much different. "I didn't want to get off on the wrong paw here but if you are going to insist on blaming me for the loss of the squirrel because I did what a good dog should do, then I'm going to ask you to leave." he stated. He could feel his temper beginning to wear thin and he didn't want to be mean to her.
"Now if you want to put the squirrel issue past us, we can continue to talk and chase squirrels in the future since you are obviously good at it " he paused to gesture to the vendor's table that sat high with meats.
"But if not, I don't think we have much else to talk about." he added on. He was trying really hard to make friends here but he wasn't sure if Patagonia's personality was something he could adapt to.

~~~
With an ill-mannered huff, Patagonia decided to let the issue slide. "I still think it's your fault," she said. "But since you're new, it's fine. You're not a hunter, so you obviously had no clue what you were doing, and it wasn't your fault that the squirrel got away." The beagle's nostrils flared, and she had to look away for a few moments to regain her posture.
"Now," she said breezily. "Was there anything else you wanted to say?"
~~~

Seymour dug his worn down claws into the dirt beneath him in irritation when she accused him of not knowing what he was doing. He had been chasing squirrels before she was conceived. But he held his breath and his tongue, while she finished her speech.

Nadine finally turned around, a bag with meat inside in hand. "Alright boy, I think it's time to go." she spoke, turning and waving goodbye to the vendor. "It was nice to meet you Harvey and I'll definitely be back soon!" she spoke, clipping Seymour's leash back on.

Seymour turned to the beagle just before Nadine began walking away. "Nope." he replied curtly, " I'll see ya around, pipsqueak." he said, turning and walking away with a small smirk.

I finally got this finished! I was going to finish this piece a couple weeks ago but I started fulltime at my job and then we had plumbing problems which prevented me from being online for about a week so I just got to finishing it today! I'm really happy with how it turned out.
I had so much fun roleplaying with hovnds and her character Patagonia. These two have really contrasting personalities and I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops on the future!
I hope you like it
