Description
ADDENDUM: Natural horses are becoming a bit more prevalent in the show, especially among stallions, so the part in my above tutorial on body markings and "natural" style ponies is becoming a bit obsolete. So, I amend my rule on body markings to this:On body markings: Subtlety is key. Keep markings to simple, medium-large sized shapes. Note, though, ponies in the show with body markings include Luna, Pipsqueak, Troubleshoes, and Sunburst which are all supporting ponies. As an OC should follow more of a background pony style, if your OC has a bit of body marking, markings should be pretty much the only unique thing about your pony else it will stick out a bit more than it should.
ADDENDUM #2: "Times are a Changeling" directly contradicts what I've said about "nice" changelings in this tutorial. So that part is now null. However, it still stands to reason that changelings aren't unique in body or shape, so if you decide to create a changeling, manes and tails are still a no go. Start with the basic changeling shape and you may alter slight things, but nothing drastic. That is all. If you are making a "new" changeling, there are several body types to pick from, but you should stick with the overall aethetic.
ADDENDUM #3: "Campfire Tales" shows a unicorn from a "Chinese" pony culture that has a curved horn; multiple gradients on her horn, feet, and ears; as well as a flowing Celestia-like mane. This was on a "main character" of her own storyline, and is extremely unique. So if you decide to use multiple traits like this on your pony, recognize that it might still be "Mary Sue" because your pony is not a pony of legend. One of these traits could be used properly, but it should be the only unique trait your pony has.
--------------
I state it in the tutorial, but I'll state it again here, all of the above are my opinions. Feel free to disagree on every point if you wish! These are just "rules" and tips I've found over time that make for a show-accurate, like-able, "good" OC. Feel free to comment with your own suggestions, or links to other helpful tutorials. I'll start compiling a list here!
Also, I'm always happy to help with developing OCs, so feel free to comment asking me for suggestions, help, a "rating," or anything else! I'll always note it to you.
Quick list of things to avoid (in order of unforgivableness):
- Black (any black at all) anywhere but the eyes
- Fully Saturated colors
-Β Alicorns
- Recolors (i.e. using the exact same mane shapes as canon characters--normally from pony creator)
- Blank flanks past filly/colt
- Dead parents
- Personal close relationships/familial relations/romatic relationships with any canon character
- Heterochromia (two different eye colors)
- 100% white anywhere but the eyes (tints of white are fine)
- Dual colored wings
- Having zero flaws in personality
Avoid ALL these things. Change them if possible.

Well, first of all, the name really won't work. Human like names don't work well for ponies. "Roxina" doesn't really fit. And "Firewolf" is just obnoxiously obvious. Like, "She's 'Firewolf' because she's a fire wolf. Fire design and a werewolf. Get it?" That's something I mentioned not to to in the tutorial--obvious names.
Second, you really should revise the color scheme. Color schemes often go with the overall idea of a pony whereas the mane/tail design, speech, and general pose/facial expression convey her attitude. If you've got a beast hunter pony, you don't want a fire color scheme. Make her hair spiked and her poses aggressive/determined, but pick a different color scheme that works better with the beast hunter idea. More neutral tones and maybe some accessories (crossbow, or a utility vest) to get the idea across is what I would suggest.
Finally, as far as Luna goes, that would work fine but tone it down a bit. I can see her as part of a pivotal moment in your OCs story where she helps her accept herself, but she shouldn't be anything more than a one time passing influence. Luna often visits the dreams of her subjects, and it wouldn't be uncommon for her to help somepony (especially if a nightmare was recurring), but stating she "accepts her for what she is" and "helps her sometimes" implies a closer relationship than just a benevolent ruler-subject one, and that's all your pony would be to her.
Hope that helps.

Doing some browsing with the vampire/werewolf/beast/monstetΒ hunter theme, and I saw a lot of black, red, blues, gold and white. Would any of those colours fit? But Im not sure wether to stay with the King Sombra Grey. And what about Beast-Claw or Beastblood for the second part of the name? And what I meant by helps her every know and then is that if she has run into a ruff patch or something, she come and give advice like before. Nothing more than that. She's basically some who gives advice and nothing more. But Luna is aware of what she is and promises to keep it a secret for her.
And I've decided to give her a beast hunter cloak with the previously mention collar, and have a crossbow as a weapon. But it's too bad that human like names don't suit, because Scarlett would go well with Beast-Claw or Beast-Blood But you do have Scarlett Red which is a colour in her but people would instantly think of the name before the colour. Or maybe I could do Scarlett Red as her body colour? But it's hard to come up with a beast hunter colour scheme because most are black/really dark grey or brown & red. And to come up with something that suits the beast hunter colour scheme is proving to be difficult.

I think Scarlet (spelled like that) Beastblood could work fine, provided you use scarlet somewhere in her color scheme--my recommendation is a hair highlight since it's a fairly saturated medium red color. I think a light brown/tan body with medium-dark brown hair and the red highlights would work great. Medium length hair cut. Incorporate that red into her cutie mark and somewhere on her collar. Give her... try green eyes and a hunter green cloak. That sounds like it would work great altogether. I think that would be what I would go with. A stoic expression and a strong, grounded pose to convey her attitude.
I still wouldn't have Luna be more than a one time figure. Any much more than that and you get into "mentor" category, and that's getting a little into Mary Sue territory.

I've chosen a dusty chestnut (I think that's what it's called) which is the colour most often seen on palomino horses. And instead of green eyes I chose a light cerulean which look really nice and complements her dusty chestnut and makes her look really nice.
And with her hair on body both her mane and tail there's two streaks, one is thicker and the other is thinner. The thicker one is scarlet red and a darker on the thinner streak. And with the rest of the hair, I've tried many shades of brown and it just looks like to much brown. So I'm still deciding on that bit. But she all has the different style of hoofs (Like Bic Mac, Shining Armor, but edited to be neater and even) and I'm debating what colour to make them. And I'm constantly working on this so hopefully I'll come up with the solution. And I've made her cloak a maroon with scarlet lining.

No no no--if you're going for a canon look, she can't have feathered hooves. She could have hoof markings (think paint/pinto) but I wouldn't even recommend that because of everything else she's got going on in her design. Regardless, in the show feathered hooves are reserved for male ponies only.
I'd have to see the overall look of her at this point to give you more tips if you decide to deviate from the description I gave you at this point. Red is reqllly difficult to do on a pony because it's easily over saturated.

Β I've just tried a blue which is between a cerulean blue and a aegean blue. Its not too bright and not too dark. It's basically if Scarlet Red blue. It actually looks really nice, it looks good and it goes well with the red streaks in her hair and everything else. What about that? And then the blue hair could represent the sad and lonely side, and then the red streaks can represent her aggressive/determined side. And with that blue there she looks good and she looks like she's just about done.Β

No, sorry. If you want a canon looking female pony, she can't have feathered hooves. It's just the truth. No amount of "perfect" color is going to fix that. And furthermore, red and blue are VERY difficult to have work together as they're two primary colors and compete for attention. It doesn't sound like a good at all idea to me.
Also, again, colors aren't for personalities. Colors are for theme.
As for the picture, if you want me to take a look it'll have to be posted somewhere. Your gallery, your sta.sh, or somewhere else.

Just a random question: How do you think the mane 6, the princesses, Discord, and the main villains or whoever really would react if they found out Scarlet was a werepony? Just curious. And since she's being a cannon oc, a few little scenarios came in my head. That's all.

Hey there! You are so awesome and have helped me soooo much because of this tutorial and I cannot thank you enough! But I want to ask you something.Β I'm making a oc/ponysona and her name is Kiahna Fireheart but I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep the first part. I've looked all over the internet and i could only find 1 pony that looked similar (because of the hairstyle but that's it) but otherwise I can't find anything like what I'm making so I'm sure it pretty unique in a way. She has a cool looking mohawk (that looks like the skrillex pony on Dragoart) and a tail that looks like a flame but it's not complicated. She has King Sombra grey body and a red, orange and yellow and red eyes and a cute little flame for her cutie mark. She is unicorn who can use fire magic as a special gift and is a werepire (but I'm not sure wether to make her a werepire only in the ponysona universe). She is confident, badass, brave, a tomboy but can be a bit girly on a rare occasion but has trouble after being dumped in the woods (which is when she becomes a werepire). And in the ponysona universe (and maybe the oc universe if you don't think it's Mary Sue and could somehow fit in the show) she has permanent wings after a DNA fault after her first turning. Is she a Mary Sue? Does she need to go back to the drawing board?Β Would that ever fit in MLP:FIM or should she just stay in the mlp ponysona universe? Are there any tips you could give me to make her a good oc/ponysona? Thanks π Keep going with the great work!

equinepalette In reply to WerewolfQueenSarah69 [2017-05-07 22:35:15 +0000 UTC]
Well, first you should know that I am insanely honest. With that said, yeah, she's a straight up Mary Sue. Especially if you give her permanent wings. That would make her an alicorn AND a "werepire". No alicorns, ever. Even if they're not born that way.
Furthermore, she's definitely not going to be a canon worthy OC. Especially with the "werepire" aspect. It just doesn't exist.Β
Finally, I can't really tell you how to make a ponysonas. If you feel it represents you well, then it's a good ponysona. So if you want to go down this route, understand that what you have is and can only be a ponysona. She can't be a canon-worthy OC.

Well, I'll either remove the fire part or the werepire thing, though were-creatures are my thing so I probably go with that and get rid if that and associated with her being a werepire than fire, but that will still be a Mary Sue as well. Plus those who are werepire, their wings can be sheathed back into them at will and probably the same the other way around, & and the form probably last for the night if the moon make them turn, etc. Or I could just replace the werepire part with werepony, but I'm pretty firm on the werepire. But I just can't figure out how to figure out how to associate her with either one of the two things without her being are Mary Sue and it's driving me CRAZY! I keep looking all over the internet but I still can't find anything else to help me. I will probably make a cannon version of her and then have a ponysona version of her. Got any ideas of how to help? I knew it was hard to mark a character be awesome with something that's not very often or if ever seen without them either being boring & plain or have them end up bleeding into the crowd like is so hard π«

equinepalette In reply to WerewolfQueenSarah69 [2017-05-09 21:14:36 +0000 UTC]
See, the big thing about making something non-Mary Sue is not making it "super special for no reason". Being a werepire... that's kinda super special for no reason by default. Not only a pony, but a vampire werewolf hybrid. When vanponies only existed by a spell, and it was only for a small amount of time. You're basically not only claiming your OC has something totally brand new (werepony) but also combining it permanently with something only temporary, which ALSO gives your unicorn wings, making it an alicorn. You're having such difficulties making it NOT Mary Sue is because there's no escaping that what you want ARE Mary Sue traits combined.
Honestly, to me, a ponysona is yourself, as a pony. Not a character in Equestria with its own story and life. Some people see their ponysona as who they would be IF they lived in Equestria, though, so your ponysona is however you want to see it. I tend to tell people to stay away from doing two different versions of their ponysonas though--just because it gets confusing and weird. Make your ponysona someone who represents you, with whatever traits you want, then work on a separate OC that you like.

Β But here's were I'm having trouble. I read a thing on a mythical creature website and it said that unicorns could walk/run in the sky using their magical horn. So I thought that could be a ability for her called 'Moonwalk'. And I thought, if there's no way whatsoever that she an be a werepony or a werepire with reason, than maybe this can be her talent/special ability or something. And when this ability, when it is activated, a few little dots around her hoofs appear and glow and give off a light cerulean blue glow. And she wears a spiked collar around her neck which the spikes glow cerulean blue when Moonwalk is activated. Cause it's a way to tell that the ability is activated. But is that Mary Sue? It probably is π. I know how wereponies and vamponies work, but I read on the werepire wiki page and it said that the wings are temporary and can be sheathed back into the body at will thus werepires do not count as alicorns if the werepire is thatvof the unicorn race. I'm sure her appearance is not Mary Sue, But I can't design her cutie mark until I get your opinion on wether she would or wouldn't be Mary Sue if she's a werepire or a werepony with or without the Moonwalk ability, or none of them at all. Because I do want to associate her with something like the night, the moon, or nature without copying something that's already done, and wereponies/werepires fit within some of those... I think. Or have her cutie mark representing her being a werepony/werepire if I make her that. But if IΒ don't that maybe something representing her Moonwalk ability if I give her that. But I just don't know what I'd do if she's not a werepony/werepire or she doesn't have the Moonwalk ability. But I want her to be a werepire or a werepony so badly, plus she would be more associated with the moon and the night. But I also want the Moonlight ability (if it's not Mary Sue). I can't decide on anything! π«Because I really want her to be cannon and look like a cool pony that could fit in the show without being Mary Sue. But what do you think? Is this an improvement? Can I have her be a werepire or a werepony with or without the Moonwalk ability without her being a Mary Sue? Because my goal is to make her be cannon, even if she just makes it over the line. And thank you for your true honesty. Thanks you for everything ππ

equinepalette In reply to WerewolfQueenSarah69 [2017-05-10 15:50:12 +0000 UTC]
See, now you've run into a different problem. A dark blue pony, with Luna's eye shape, eye color, body shape, AND its moon themed? Does that sound like a good idea? It's basically Luna but with a different hairstyle. That appearance won't work. At all.
As for the rest, if you want here to be a werepony (not a werepire) that's got to be the ONLY unique thing about her. No different hooves, no "moonwalk" ability. I think where you're losing sight is that you rely way too much on other lore, when the idea about making a canon worthy pony is to keep it within the realm of MLP LORE. For example, to make the werepony thing work, your pony is a wildlife researcher who primarily studies the timber wolf populations of Equestria. One expidition while tracking a case of a rabies like virus that's threatening the timber wolf population in a certain area [the everfree forest, or some other woodsy area on the Equestrian map], she was bit trying to help a supposedly rabid timber wolf. The thing is, if the virus infects a pony, it causes werewolf-like symptoms and behavior. There. Now you come up with the appearance.Β

WerewolfQueenSarah69 In reply to equinepalette [2017-05-12 10:57:04 +0000 UTC]
Well my ideas a changing so much since that comment and I haven't been able to connect about her I to so I apologise. And I did come up with a story for how she became a werepony. She livedwith her father in a cabin in the Everfree forest, though no one has found the cabin she lives in. Which is both good and bad. She can have peace and quiet and not hurt anyone but the bad things are that she has trust issues with new people us if afraid of what people would think of she her, or then finding out about her secret. She has come into Ponyville once, but she walked in wearing a black hooded cloak and left as quick as she arrived. You could ask everyone, but don't expect anyone to remember. If they do, they would probably say that they saw a mare in a black cloak getting some supplies but thats it really. He is a monster hunter and protects people from monsters and all that. And since that's basically the family business, she was going to get a cutie mark based on monster hunting as well. And one night she gets attacked by a rabid timberwolf (but can't some wereponies curse other or something?) either way. Her father gets attack and is struggling to get up so the beast goes for her. She ends up getting bitten, the beast takes her father. And that gives her a life purpose. To hunt the monster down and find her father, if he's still alive. But he is. But she will never know or it will take a very long to find him. Either way. But know I'm debating on changing her colour theme, cause this is what I did. I created her appearance with a pic of Luna in the corner for comparison reasons. Luna has a blue and purple theme, and my oc has just blues but their darker than Luna. And I decided to make her cutie mark a paw print with little claws and its very simple and only uses 2 colours. But now you're telling me to change the colour theme, but I just can't decide. I've decided to make her a werepony since it can be cannon, and since a werepony is a creature of the night, that's why I went with the night blues. But now I might have to change her name again. But why is the Moonwalk ability not ok? I made sure its has a few bads to it. It allows her to walk on the sky and for the price it's slowly drains her energy, and if she uses it to much it could break. And it's a family heirloom and the collar is very hard to fix if broken because of how old it is. And it needs to be recharged (but I'm still figuring out something reasonable to recharge it) Is it just not allowed cause it's not cannon? But there's so many things that can give people greater powers than that. Plus she doesn't uses it that often at all. She might use it a one or two times a week, like getting something night out of a tree she can't get from climbing, ladder, etc. For easier traveling for not too long trips, escape danger from below, its can be quite useful and it's not just for the reasons to be special. But werepony can be any colour I'm sure, so if i have to change her to I colour that either is related to the night,Β a colour I like or something that suits her personality, cause any colour can suit her occupation and cutie mark. Be a red like blood, or gold. God knows. Now all I got to do is make some little edits to her story, change her colour theme, and change her name, though I do like Angel. Angel's are good, but some cane be a little dark and corrupted, and for her that can be the werepony. Thanks ππ

equinepalette In reply to WerewolfQueenSarah69 [2017-05-12 18:05:36 +0000 UTC]
Yes, change the color scheme. If your character shares more than two traits with a canon pony, (like body color, eye shape, eye color, unique body shape, etc) it's way too close to that character. And, go back and reread my section in this guide about colors, because I'm not sure you paid any attention to it. You don't want only one color in your pony, and you don't want it to be all dark, night themed or not.
No, you can't have the moonwalk ability. It's not only pointless to her overall idea, it's a Mary Sue ability, drawbacks or not. It would be like a soccer playing earth pony who had an amulet that gave her a temporary horn and allowed her to paint art masterpieces. Unrelated and overpowered.
Also, you need to dial back your descriptions. The whole bit about going into ponyville once is completely irrelevant and distracting. And the "good and bad" about living in an isolated cabin.
Oh, and don't use the name "Angel". The name doesn't have to match the talent, but that's a REALLY overused name/idea and a bit too far out in left field for a werepony.

I've just made a dramatic change and have scrapped everything about her except for choosing to make her a werepire or a werepony, cause I really want her to be one of those, but it's probably Mary Sue π, but I'm trying to figure out how to make it make sense without it being for no reason. Plus that's was never my goal, to have a ability without reason. I always do things with/for a reason. So her new name is Angel Moonshine, her body is a denim blue with 3 shades of navy blue with her main and tail. Her hair and tail styles remain the same, she has the other hoof type with the different coloured hoofs which are cerulean blue, same with eye colour with Luna's eyes shape, body shape, horn shape and a dark shade of cerulean blue for her eyeshadow. I've spent up to 3am last night working on her appearance on the sketches app on my iPad and I don't think she looks Mary Sue to me. But I could be wrong.

Oh, he looks really nice! That's the one thing I always recommend with shipping babies: design them so they can stand on their own as a design and doesn't look like a mosh mash of traits from the parents. Good job!

I think making multi-colored eyes is actually pretty cute. I sometimes use that in my OCs, but make the colors match eachother.. Is this okay?

True heterochromia is generally the problem. So, like, one eye is blue and the other red or some such like that. Combining colors in eyes is fine! I recommend them being close on the color wheel, though, like red/orange, cyan/blue/green, etc.

I think dead parents are fine so long as you try to make something different with their dead parents. which is hard, I must admit

Because it comes across as a trope, I make it a "DO NOT" rule. Immediately it comes across as "oh pity me my childhood was lacking because I had dead parents". Only exception is if they're an older adult pony and their parents died "naturally" lol.

Well, I thought about saying "old age" but I've known people who died in their 50s or 60s due to things like a heart attack, which is natural but their not old. The parents don't have to live out their full life necessarily, it just shouldn't happen during the characters developmental years (I.e. Childhood or adolescence).

Again, this tutorial was made YEARS ago. The section on changelings just happens to be outdated now--they can be a bit more unique. But like bat ponies, theres still not enough information on them to really determine a basis of what's right and wrong on them.

Bah, I think it still holds up, to be honest; I was just makin' a little joke π: 0 β©: 1
We only see a little more of the bat ponies in the comics (I love the comics :U) and I haven't seen any cutie marks on them.

Interesting. I don't read the comics, so I wouldn't know. Interesting that they may not have any cutie marks.

THOUGH there was a segment of the comics where all of the Mane 6 were turned into Bat Ponies like Flutters was
All of their cutie marks became bat/vampire themed. I think...apples may have taken over ponyville and Twilight brought back Flutterbat to copy her apple lust. Their cutie marks were all changed and themed of either apples or vampire-esque things

Ah--that's different though! There are big differences between Vamponies and Bat Ponies!
