The same thing “Animal Farm” has to do with communism, only without the cynical wisdom....
....YET.
But the starving dogs will be eating all the eggs soon enough.
The problem with “Animal Farm” is that Orwell bought into the starting premise that the Czar was willfully neglectful.
He was not.
A better beginning would have been to have had a well meaning but desperately overwhelmed Farmer who was in a VERY tight competitive market with all the other farmers, this competition representing WW1. Distracted, he delegated too much responsibility to farmhands he hadn’t properly vetted, and THEY are the ones doing all the abuse. But the animals don’t grasp that they’re acting on their own initiative and the Farmer wouldn’t approve of cruelty, and drive him and them out.
The rest of the book is spot on.

Thank you for speaking up, I appreciate it. I was reluctant to depict the evidence of brutality directly because I felt like that would be fetishizing suffering, which already happens a lot, and I didn't want to contribute to that. But you're right that the focus of the message needs work: I had a hard time resolving it, and I think it came up short. The responsibility of rejecting one's role in a harmful system is important, but it's still centering the wrong people. I think I need to try again, because the problems with it are built into the central metaphor.
