The 'first cut' looks like this.
I'm thinking of turning the whole sample on end, duplicating it, then trying to engineer some depth information into the 'pair' so that it will 'stand out' [or sink in] in 3-D.

Neither am I.To get a good aspect ratio the first step would be turning the sample on end and then duplicating it. There is then a set of 'actions' or recipe that horizontal only 'spherical distortion' to move pixels further apart or closer together, or further 'out of' or 'into' the picture plane.

and here it is, a 3-D version of your stock: Please try crossing your eyes until the two halves of the thumbnail overlap. If you haven't done it before the result should be a surprise.
