I think this is very nice, I love the skin on this guy. It looks as though you added a duplicate overlay of about 20% gaussian blur to soften it as well, but I have an old version on Photoshop and this is what I have to do to get this effect. The only thing I would have done is added a distant light, maybe off to the left and behind him, pointed it down, then made it a soft blue or red (about 20%). That would have outlined his body with soft distant color (like a neon or street light coming through a distant window), rather than just dark shadows. As for the shorts, I play with the mats all the time by finding my own textures online and replacing them. Many of the clothing pieces will have separate mats for each part (trim, waistband, etc.) and you can replace all or some. With all that said, I do like this piece. This isn't really a critique, just observations.

I'm impressed! This pic has indeed an overlay with a Gaussian blur at about 17%. I don't use that technique much now but it was present in most pictures I made then. I still suck with interior lights though maybe less than then LOL. Sadly I can't open that file anymoreΒ so as to see what result I'd get with some bluishΒ back light.

I'm hardly an expert on lighting myself lol, most the time I just end up using a pre-set and tweaking it to my liking But I'm learning.

I'm guessing you did the main shadow post-work? Or have I gotten that wrong....? Either way, this scene has a nice look to it, sort of like a photo-manipulation, and his pose/expression are very good at conveying the title.

I'm not any good a critiquing, but if I could put my 2 cents in, I would have strived for more of a fill light in the foreground rather than a spot, or possibly a much dimmer spotlight. Just my opinion the surfaces here look excellent as well~ Nice work!

Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate.

I used a desaturated overlay to deepen the shadows. I now think that if I want to use that technique I should do some brighter renders and only use it on pictures with contrasting colors. This pic was rather dark to begin with but I liked the effect the overlay had on the shadows. Maybe it is a little bit too dramatic.

In DAZ Studio I still really suck at interior lighting. Even more when I use dark atmospheres I wanted the character to stand out against the background. Obviously, I still need to find a way to do that more efficiently. You're right about the fill light in the foreground only - Problem is I don't know how to achieve that I will try to use a point light rather than a spotlight and see what comes of it.

And thank you for your comment on the surfaces. In all my renders I spend time texturing stuff to my liking. In this pic the only thing I am not happy with is the texture of his boxer shorts.

You are very welcome, I'm glad to offer advice as I'm very particular about lighting myself. I know what you mean about interior style lighting D|S lights can be fickle in my experience.

If you see lighting in any of my images that you like the look of, please let me know and I will see about getting you the info on my light rig. Keep in mind that I do play around with post-working, however. But usually the general base lighting is from the raw render.

Keep up the great work
