Description Edit: ok 3 is a charm, i saw another ugly layer issue, man what it is with layers and me submitting something...

- Revision 4 - [link]
- Revision 5 - You are looking at it
- Revision 6 (Scrap/Desat) - [link]

After some feedback from previous submission: Rev 4 ( [link] ) here is a more blueish version - No Desaturation this time.. not sure i like this version more

I didn't exactly want to make duplicates here so i applied some different concept of editing it -

comments and criticism welcome

Changelog
- New Planet with Nightlights
- Nebula made Nebulaish
- Instead of sharper the ship is now partially covered by smoke and has drastic shadow (ie. Space is black, except where it isn't)
- Engine made less drastic, but still drastic

Well as i said, please comment which version you like more , i am partially tending to favor the previous revision, even though that has many flaws - technically i could merge the 2 versions more or less together ie, have multi colored stars in rev 4.. but i think both versions should stay unique... because they are in a sense different concepts...

Please understand that even though i call it Revision 5 that does not mean revision 4 is older or worse, i just make different version to get some feedback on which style is better/worse - i haven't exactly got much of a clue about spaceship scenes.. in space

Edit: I linked to a scrap version with "yet-another" different style .. ah well

I would love to think there's some alien spacecraft travelling through space. Unaware of us insignificant humans..

Would you mind if I could use this for a custom Yu-gi-oh! card? Credit will be given to you for the art and the card will not be used for my own personal profit.

I am currently working on a slideshow/video and it will contain many different pictures. Now i have found some images on your site more specific here: that I found very nice and fiting to the content of my video. Now I kindly ask if i may make use of this particular picture in the aforementioned video. It will be published onto youtube. A If my request is denied I will not make use of the picture. I do just wish to use it in the video not print it but it will be in a non commercial way. In credits and description I will make credit to your site and you if you wish.

1st - nice to see a scene made with this craft, GREAT job (got on my desktop)
Now some things... (most of them are purely based on taste so do NOT take them seriously into account )
1st - the rotation of the ship towards the camera - perhaps the upper part could be rotated so as to reflect the sun(specular)? Not only because of this, it just doesn't seem right to me this way... I strongly suppose it's just me here though...
Next about the nebulae - still looks kinda... weird... I guess the depth perception isn't there or something like that, I'm not sure...
About the engine effects - they are fine as they are

it needs a hamster toting a big ass, nasty cheese laser.. actually they both look good! I like the De-sat one just a tad better as it adds a sense of.. been around the galaxy a few times and back!

Thanks a lot for this extremely kind comment!

Yes, i gave myself a kick and fixed the glaring issues of the previous one after all.. guess it still could be better though!

But even though it could be better that is beyond my skill level for now...

Very, very cool. The little touches make this image pop just a bit more. (I still liked the other one, though.)

eRe4s3r In reply to dmaland [2009-08-23 11:23:54 +0000 UTC]

hehe Originally i wanted to just replace stars/planet in the previous version, but i had edited specular/diffuse layers to match the environment, and the alpha map was somehow off due to that.. bottom line i had to completely replace the entire composition from the ground up then layer the previous spacescape over the new one and delete parts i didn't want

In the end i think it worked out pretty well though

First of all Congratulations on this fine piece of art u have done really well :-D , also would u mind telling me what software and techniques did u use on accomplishing it ?

this version has 3 major improvments on the previous one that made it such an exellent piece :

1- the blueish ambient gave the ship and the overall scene a sense of depth and power
2- the additions to the planet were necessary
3- the engine trails in the previous version were too bright compared to the overall scene

Congratulations !!!

P.S i like the fog effect !

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

eRe4s3r In reply to albus-atlantis [2009-08-22 22:16:13 +0000 UTC]

Sure Well glad you like it ^^

- I use Cinema 4D R11 with about 8 lights, 2 for shadow casting and ambience and the other 6 for a spreading specular effect - one that does not affect anything in the back of the ship

Aside that, photoshop and smudging and painting and deleting with normal/color-dodge... lots of layers maybe 2 hours
I rendered the ship as multi-pass image with alpha (each element a different layer) and edited specular/highlights, the rest is liberal applied nebula stuff i have from previous spacescapes- ah and the planet is a edited as well to blur out the far horizon (simulating a dense atmosphere )

Overall i still like the desaturated version of this one the best, i am just not a huge fan of these saturated colors.. but then again Thats why i linked 3 versions

sorry for taking a long time to reply i just saw the message ( i am new here , 2 days only )

U know u can do v6 by scraping the outer space enviorment and doing a render of the same ship on an alien world surface
terragen would be usefull here

and again great work :-0

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

eRe4s3r In reply to albus-atlantis [2009-08-22 22:56:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but planet fall will be much further along - i also do terragen yes.. but it may not appear this way but scenes tend to take about 50 times as long as doing the actual model, alone to balance light/reflections/fog and so on, on planets i'd even have to use GI (which i do not use at all here)

i agree with the scene thing but Global Illumination will be a fine addition even to space scenes , that been said ,
