Description
Well, some people always complain (you know who you are!) that i never make color.... do color.. eh, use color on my ships.. (the EX stands for extra ,p)Well there you go, its colorful and its different - and its extra!
Thats about as much "texturing" as this ship will see, i quickly.. and i do mean, VERY not quickly threw out the idea of actually doing adapted textures (you know, real textures) for this... but then i saw that after 3 hours i was maybe 0.4% done - so the next 3 hours where on making a nicer/different shader.. so heres a different shader
I haven't really got an idea for a scene for this, so if you (yes you, brave or bored anonymous reader!) have any ideas, drop them in the comments
I still haven't found my "zone" it seems... well on to the next projects...

I feel like this conversation happened, between developers.
"Sir, we've made some of the best ships ever. What should we do now?"
"Make a ship out of guns....out of guns and engines."
"That....may or may not work. What about recoil?"
"Wait...THAT'S IT! The recoil will allow for amazing maneuvers! Yes, that's it!"
"Brilliant."
One can only imagine what happened when the order for half a thousand orders for cannons came-about.
"They want WHAT?"
Lol...beautiful, man. Beautiful.

I just keep finding more and more people who can kick my ass in 3d modeling... very good gallery, very good work.

You could try rendering an ambient occlusion map, first- that way, you won't have to render the global illumination which will save you massively on render time. It also adds definition to the shapes, it'll look great in any case.
As for the texture.. How would a space ship ever accumulate moss..? It doesn't make sense and kind of destroys the feeling of the ship.. Try something tighter, more sophisticated

Haha, well it was flying through the green WARP
If theres one thing i really suck at its texturing spaceships. I just have no idea where to put color, next one is going to be shades of grey again as well... Though, i had a nice redish/white/black version that looked great but i changed shaders again because of other issues (this ship isn't really made to be textured ;( )

Ah, they're not UV'ed properly? Understandable. I wouldn't want to UV that for the life of me :'D
I suppose you could just use a box projection for the UVs and paint onto that.. If you use a high res texture map, the bleeding shouldn't be too much of a problem (hope you have memory to spare, though! xD).

no, its all just noise and shader work, no texture maps at all.. and no uv (and yes, i do use box mapping and that but theres many issues with that and hard spotlights/specular, for this rendering i had to turn it entirely off otherwise it would have thrown "noise" (white dots) all over the place...
Also this ship suffers from copying too much, testament to me wanting to finish this ASAP ^^ So my urge to texture it/scene it isn't so huge.

Haha, fair enough. It's a bit like this saying: "once you're done with 90% of a project, it's time for the other 90%".
UV'ing isn't usually all that bad when you get the hang of it, but with objects of this size, you'll have to split it into parts, or it'll kill you. :รพ of course, then you'll have to start looking out for resolution problems etc.. and there's no easy way around it. Not until 3D painting becomes sophisticated enough, anyway.

Yeah, unwrapping isn't such an issue but the real issue is that i changed the "copied" models ever so slightly, so copying the UV map doesn't work, it breaks at parts and stretches at others, a nightmare indeed. One of the main reasons that smaller ships i sometimes texture while larger ships i usually don't.

hmmm a scene? well you could do a glory shot of a broadside, or maby have the ship up close and show the business end of that broadside off in the distance?

By far the best ship yet, though Im sad there isnt much of a light map(?) on this ship as in your previous ones to help indicate some sort of activity on the ship I mean I can understand the lack of windows but it doesnt seem like a stealthy ship in the first place to displace all lighting sources to the ship itself.

Yeah tis true, i completely killed all shadow casters... this ship doesn't lend itself well to fancy light ^^
My next ship (commission) is gonna be better, i hope

I use cinema 4D The thing is usually i don't do stuff without goal, but this ship started as a doodle and went from there, so no plan or point.. no scene in mind etc. Its telling that my best images are the ones where i modeled things with a clear goal in mind.

the color is subtle
which is a good thing as your not going to see much anyhow
for the most part flying space ship is somewhat like piloting a sub
it's done by instruments and not visual, so what's the point of a fancy paint job no one's going to see?

who cares about Color?!?!
you think in a Space battle anyone"s gonna stop and say "oh man, thats a really nice Color on that ship. bet that took some time"
only to be complete annihilated by the incoming Laser Blast because they were to busying worrying about its Color scheme.
dude i love you work.
for that reason, because everyone knows that it doesn't have to be pretty to kick some ass! lol

well man in that case. i think a space battle might be in order.
why dont you have it square off with you other vessel [link]
in high orbit around a gas Giant or something.

Aw space opera weaponry. Why does no one like the allure of Hard Science Fiction warfare? It is quite deadly... Plus if you add in some radical if plausible nano-tech it becomes perfect.
