Pheew... thats a tough question ^^ I think I would go for cardboard or crafting foam. Or you could get two thick sheets of the thick kind of foam, thats used to make cosplay armor.carve a part out so that the sword fits in and glue the sheets together. Then you can stat amking the thing roud from the outside....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to TobiUchiha56 [2013-03-07 09:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess it would. I've seen many people making such swords out of wood and in fact an acrylic board ist a little lighter but it has kind of a wooden behavior

How durable are the swords after being completed?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to digital-sabertooth [2013-01-24 11:40:29 +0000 UTC]

If you don't throw them to the ground accidentally (like me... o.O) these swords will live for a loooooong time

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

HikariRuby [2012-12-12 01:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Did you put clay on both sides of the sword or only one side? o.o

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to HikariRuby [2013-01-24 11:40:54 +0000 UTC]

Both sides, so that it looks 3D from both

NarutoSage5 [2012-12-02 01:56:08 +0000 UTC]

How thick is the acrylic board you used? Also, is there a way to hold the handle without using leather? Because the sword I want to make (the black sword of Kirito from Sword Art Online) and it doesn't have something covering the handle ([link] ).

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to NarutoSage5 [2013-01-24 11:43:10 +0000 UTC]

Hm... The board was round about 5cm thick and the covering of the handle couls also be done with clay ore may be wood... You just need something that is thicker than the board and formable into what shape the handhold has to be...

Thank you for the tutorial! ; 0 ; I've been researching a lot about making a sword. This is really helpful, and your swords turned out really good too!
I'm going to be making two swords of Kirito from Sword Art Online so I hope this works out good for me ; w ;
May I ask how much your total materials had cost? Mainly the Acrylic board, clay, and paint? ; w ; I'm sorry///

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to Chibi-Kizumi [2012-09-17 17:23:40 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks for the compliment! I'm glad the tutorial could help you! ^_^
Well, the acrylic board was the most expensive material of them all. For the size of the two swords I payed a bit more than 50โ‚ฌ (or 60$). Clay was something less than 20โ‚ฌ and the colors were very cheap. All in all you should get away with something about 70โ‚ฌ for two swords. ^_^ Hope this can hlp you too!

Black-Boo [2012-07-16 20:53:26 +0000 UTC]

So where does one go about getting acrylic board? A craft store?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to Black-Boo [2012-07-17 20:36:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, a craft store

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Black-Boo In reply to Eressea-sama [2012-07-17 20:44:16 +0000 UTC]

...and it struck me last night shortly after I asked this that Acrylic board is another term for plexiglass, which I planned on using for my equipment for Link from the get go.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to Black-Boo [2012-07-18 16:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, kind of The boar I used was not as havy as plexiglas and not clear. Don't know how to describe it...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Black-Boo In reply to Eressea-sama [2012-07-19 21:23:47 +0000 UTC]

I found some similar to what you're talking about at the hardware store when I went to get my plexiglass yesterday. Well, only tie will tell if I'm actually able to pull this off and successfully make a Goddess Sword.

seeka-san [2012-06-30 21:30:45 +0000 UTC]

What kind of air-dry clay do you like to use/find most effective?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to seeka-san [2012-07-01 13:23:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, the only one I could get was [link] ^_^ but it hase some "bad habits" It shrinkes when it dries so there is no way to stay close to a patern or something... and if it dries to fast it gets some nasty cracks... so if I had to chose I probably would take something else... But at least it works ^^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

seeka-san In reply to Eressea-sama [2012-07-01 16:47:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, just thought I'd ask! I'm always on the hunt for better materials, but I guess that a problem with the clay no matter what type or brand you get haha

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sabathamk In reply to seeka-san [2012-08-21 02:25:35 +0000 UTC]

Apoxie Sculpt apparently doesn't shrink, but it is very pricey in comparison to most others. I haven't used it myself, but I've seen it used on various customs before.

Do you think the same methods would work for a cosplay battle axe?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Eressea-sama In reply to PastaCakeVe [2012-06-28 19:44:10 +0000 UTC]

ohm... well... don't know... Try it out! 'Cause I can't think of any reason why I should not work....
