Description
My dad works for Entergy, and apparently got some pretty epic pics of what the storm did to Galveston. A few seemed good for stock, so I'm sharing.Related content

That would sadden me to see a sight like this Such a calm and beautiful place destroyed by the uncontrollable forces of nature.

No, he's not, but he works for Entergy, and said he took these photos...at least I think he did. It's entirely possible that A: he wasn't the one actually holding the camera, or B: Tony got the pic, but wasn't the one holding the camera. Doesn't much matter, though, I suppose.

Guys, you have to remember that in areas low to sea level, such as Galveston graves are in vaults above ground. With water as powerful as it is the tops can come off when storm surges are 15+ feet.
As far as burying becoming illegal and cremating being mandatory, a lot of religions forbid cremation. Judaism is one.

It would be awesome if there was like a McDonald's sign in the background somewhere; the photo would look like an advertisement gone wrong (or right, from some perspectives).

Yeah even more disturbing if some poor bastard somehow recognizes a loved ones wrecked coffin.

yeah, this is why graveyards & cemeteries should be illegal
there isnt any room for the dead anymore
just cremate them & drop them in the ocean
or just keep the skulls in your house the way the Japanese do

THIS IS FRIIKIN WOW MAN! Do tell me, because of the amount of water under the ground, made these pop up like that? Wow man, this is such a rare shot. Do you have any idea how some are on top of the others? This is too insane! GREAT!

It's because modern coffins seal so well that they usually contain enough air to be buoyant (at least for a while).
During a flood the ground soil will saturate, becoming soft enough for modern coffins to literally pop out of the ground and start floating away.
So they put glass vials in the ends of coffins with identification information, so after a flood they can tell whose corpse it is without opening it.

Wicked, lol, whoa. This is a real great shot, and at the same time, burry me, both humorous and disturbing -- humorous because they're floating off, dead people. I know, a dark sense of humor but, what can I say. This is indeed my favorite photo and most unique.

First time I saw a picture of this happening was in the mid 90s. Wish I could find the photograph again, it showed this house on a hill after a major flood.
House was perfectly intact but every inch of their lawn was covered with beached coffins that had floated there. What a way to wake up and start your day. Kind of reminds me of that scene in Poltergeist where the coffins burst up out of the ground.

I don't know what disturbs me more...
the fact that it happened at all, or the sight of that one in the back flipped over on it's top

Wow... that's just creepy.
I'd heard the coffins and vaults were popping up out of the ground, but I hadn't seen any pics of it yet.
These are kind of cool, thanks for posting!
