A Panorama taken at the climax of the pink Alpine glow we were so lucky to have. The combination of the low angle of the sun and the snowy coating (the volcano itself is, of course, black) is another proof that winter is the best time of the year to shoot in Iceland.
Öræfajökull is the highest mountain and volcano in Iceland. One of the most feared as well, as it has violently erupted twice in historical times. Prior to the first eruption the area around it was challed Hérað (shire), being green and lush. After the eruption, the area was flooded and covered in ash and volcanic debris. For decades after the eruption the area was uninhabited and since been called Öræfi - badlands.
