Description Calvin (from Calvin & Hobbes) as Naruto Uzumaki.
I just had this idea of using the Duplicator as the Shadow Clone Jutsu and I HAD to draw it.

I wanted it to be similar to Bill Watterson's style to make Calvin as recognizable as possible; if I drew it in my own style, it wouldn't be clear that it was Calvin since he's dressed as Naruto. So then it'd look like I just drew a bunch of short Narutos.

I don't usually try to copy other people's styles, so I was hesitant going into this. I wasn't sure how much trouble I would have trying to make it look decent. My first few goes at drawing Calvin weren't looking good and I was close to scrapping the picture. I really wanted to get the idea out though, so I kept trying after a bit of a break.

It went better after that. I did try to directly copy some things where I could but after doing a couple of them (and spending some time earlier just reading some of the comics and looking at the drawing style), I actually got comfortable enough to try and draw the rest on my own or make up parts of them myself to stay closer to my ideas rather than compromising them based on what reference drawings I could find.

The front 2 Calvins were largely drawn without reference since I couldn't find reference for the exact perspectives I wanted. I may have done a lot of the Calvin on the box myself too, but I don't remember now. I actually drew this weeks ago but didn't get to colour it until now.

It was tough trying to keep the Calvins consistent both to each other and to the style; there's definitely some problems in things like limb length and such. I certainly didn't do his hair as well as I could've (in terms of accuracy). I didn't quite understand how to do it until after I already drew it and had to fit the colouring according to that rather than how it "should be".

Back to limb length, I know Naruto's pants are rolled up a bit and showing his legs but I couldn't fit that in since Calvin's legs are so short. Besides, short pants touch his feet, OK?!!

I didn't do a small rough plan for this picture; I just starting drawing at full size from the start. I'm thankful I didn't run out of space or mess up the layout too much. I almost did a sixth Calvin since there's a panel of the story where a sixth duplicate was partially drawn in.
I had to look it up to confirm there were only five.

You told me about this Oh it is awesome. Since I kinda have a knowledge gap about Calvin & Hobbes, I won't know the inaccuracies very well. but from what I read, this pic seems hilarious and it certainly looks great. Where is Jump-Calvins shadow by the way? Also, congratulations about getting the layout right this first time! I really like this drawing, so playful!

I could link the original comic strips of this Duplicator story if you're interested. Just ask.
All you really need to know for the context though is that Calvin is a spiky-haired blond kid with a cardboard box that was used to make duplicates of himself. The similarities/crossover potential couldn't be ignored.

I left out the jumping Calvin's shadow. I figured that he was high enough off the ground to not beΒ casting a significant shadow (especially not in this simplified style).

Thanks!

I was a little worried someone may have already done this, but I looked around a bit and didn't find it.
Thanks.

I think you're pretty good from what I've seen in your gallery. It shouldn't be much of a stretch to do something cartoony like this.

maybe something a little less thick lined and .. i dunnoΒ  more detail??
what do you think would get me to that similarity.Β  not asking to do similar like duplicate art im asking as one artist to another.. for i guess a sort of critique of my style..Β

as dangerous as it sounds to me.. maybe that could be a journal i could ask.

I guess I should clarify for myself first, then. What exactly are you trying to achieve? What do you think is in this picture that you can't do?
I'd be glad to try and help, but maybe I misunderstood what you meant.

i think what i was asking for was similar to an art critique, but more of an artist critique.. kind of.. but more of how i draw from looking at my art.
i know i can't really do much with MS Paint, but maybe some pointers would help guide me.

I don't really know how to give critiques. I'm not sure I have.
I also don't really know much about cartoon-style drawing (this picture is not at all how I normally draw or colour), or dragons.

Well, at least based on the pictures I can see, I can tell that you've improved compared to a couple years ago or so. The limbs have better form/anatomy and the style overall looks more refined and confident. The facial expressions are nice and clear to understand what the emotions are.

The lines look good for MS Paint, but I think the roughness of the lines that MS Paint typically gives don't suit your work. How did you do this one? I think the smooth lines here look much better.

If you don't want to use MS Paint, there are free, more powerful programs you can download. Do you have a scanner? I don't use a tablet either; I just scan drawings and colour with a mouse.

If you want to use MS Paint or something simple like that, have you considered trying pixel art/sprites? I think your cartoony style and your familiarity with drawing more by pixels from using MS Paint would be a good fit for pixel art.

sorry to have asked for that.Β  i just kinda wanna be able to draw more like others and be happy with my artwork some day.
if you have any recomendations i'd enjoy hearing them for other art programs.
i think i've done a few, but im not too familiar with pixel art.

You should be more confident! Do you "kinda" wanna or do you WANNA be able to be happy with your artwork?

I only used GIMP myself. Others may recommend something else.
If you wanna try pixel art, it might help to start with editing sprites rather than starting from scratch. It might give you a closer look at how others do it, so you can get an idea of the tricks and techniques people use to achieve certain effects and stuff.

i use to use gimp.. i haven't been able to get it back though.
i need to because i found it soo much easier to draw atop of my sketches with it.
and was easier to colour for the most part.
