Description Aeris/Aerith vs Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.

Looking back, I did an unusual amount of Final Fantasy VII pictures this year. There was Barret, then Seto, then (if you count it) Creepy Woody/Don Corneo, and now this. I also had ideas for one with Vincent and one with Cloud, but I didn't get to them. There was no special reason for all of these; I just happened to have the ideas this year. It's kinda neat that it happened to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the game though.

This seems to be another in my unintended series of females fighting main/big villains.
Others were Chi-Chi vs Vegeta, Chi-Chi vs Mecha Freeza, Bulma vs Freeza, Amy vs Metal Sonic, Peach vs Bowser, and Jill vs Tyrant. The last one is actually canon though, so it's not really the same.

I had these pose ideas for months before actually drawing this. It came out while I was trying to do a completely different picture, with the only connection being one character had a staff. I ended up using different poses for that picture and having these poses here lying around unused. I never intended to draw Aeris or Sephiroth, but I liked the poses to want to use them and I needed someone with a staff (though I guess I could've used any sort of vertical weapon or even a bare fist). So here we go.

Sephiroth's pose didn't turn out as well as the initial rough idea though. It looked more dynamic before, and some of it got lost when I was drawing it as a proper body. I also changed it a bit because the original, while it looked cool, didn't make as much sense as an attacking pose as I wanted it to. I try to make my poses make sense and have actual logic, rather than just looking cool. The perspective also messed me up.

Aeris' pose caused some trouble too. I was bent on making it dynamic and I was satisfied with it. But in focusing on making it dynamic, I overlooked that the posing of her legs may not even make sense. Like the amount of foreshortening suggested a distance between them that wouldn't be possible with the posing of them. Of course, I didn't notice this until after I scanned the lines, and I had to try and fix it on the computer. I could only do so much by that point though, so it still may be stretching it a bit much.

I usually have no special meaning behind battle damage "design", but there's an exception with Sephiroth here. I don't remember what got me thinking this, but I'm under the impression that people consider Sephiroth like a samurai or that he was designed to be like one. Apparently he was inspired by a samurai..?

I notice that some fictional samurai are shown with only one sleeve. I tried to look it up to see if there's a meaning behind it or if it's just a design choice. It was really hard to look it up though since most of the results I got were tattoos (samurai one sleeve).

Even if I did find something, there's so much bad information online that it's hard to know for sure. Some say it's a ronin thing of a samurai losing his master or his master's favour. Some say it's only a fictional design thing to make a character clearly identifiable as a samurai. Some say it's to allow more free movement with the sword arm (I can attest to this the most because I always roll up my dress shirt sleeves in case I have to punch someone and don't want the sleeve to hold me back ).

If it's a ronin thing or a movement thing, great that I got to suggest more samurai visual elements. If it's a fictional thing, I had to give him battle damage anyway, so it at least doesn't make the look pointless.

With the rest of the shredded cloth on him, it's supposed to suggest those wings on the lower body of Safer Sephiroth (which I thought was an odd name and only now wonder if it's another bad translation).

I'm really not sure if I'm satisfied with this or not. The characters were drawn on two separate pages and pieced together. I couldn't see until then just how problematic the layout would be. It left a lot of empty space and I'm bad with filling in empty space because I don't know how to do backgrounds.

This was supposed to take place in the location at the end of disc one (I'm being vague in case anyone here hasn't played it). I couldn't do the setting though, so there was a bunch of nothing around the characters. I tried to fill it with colours and stuff, desperately trying to make it a little more interesting to look at. At some points, it was starting to look like they were underwater, which was...uh...kinda...dark.

They aren't supposed to be underwater though, or at least not in the water like touching it. The light is supposed to be like the beaming light things in the part at the end of disc one. I don't even know how to do that though, so it doesn't resemble it that much.

Special thanks to for mentioning floriography to me. I like to try giving my titles significance. I try to have things like hidden meanings, wordplay, etc. With Aeris being the flower girl, using floriography is perfect.

An alternate title was "This Guy are Dead".

I always thought it was supposed to be "Seraph Sephiroth"; the Final Fantasy wiki thinks it might be either that or "Sefer Sephiroth", to double-up on the Kabbalah reference.

In case you were wondering, apparently Bizarro Sephiroth was supposed to be Rebirth Sephiroth, but the translators misread it as Reverse Sephiroth.

I did read up on some of that, but I wasn't sure if it was fan speculation/theories or factual influences and intended names.
I don't think I heard about the Bizarro Sephiroth thing though. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if they'll re-translate any of the names in the Remake (assuming it comes out...).

Also, I appreciate the fave on Kefka.

Hehe, I have to say, I love the background on this... very atmospheric and fitting. you're right. the legs are a bit messed up... maybe you could try "camera angle from very below to get such effects? I don't know... I think you've done it before.. and you've definitely done it more than I. It does look very dynamic though...

Heheh, floriography, great jobΒ

also, I do love how you did sephiroth's hair, it looks dynamic and stylishΒ

The low camera angle is what I was going for, but I'm not very good at it.

Do you know floriography and know what the title means?

Thanks!

Β I see what you mean with the poses, and the legs in general. However I still think this is pretty sweet all around. Still love Aeris' pose. It's like.. the staff is being wielded like a bat and Seph's gonna get his face smashed in. XD Hell she looks like she might throw the damn thing.

Eric-3 In reply to MD5-Mobstar [2017-12-22 23:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Aeris' right leg should be pointing more towards the camera, but as is it looks like too much of a side view. It was even worse before I fixed it a bit digitally.
Haha.

Thanks for the fave and taking the time to comment.

I think you did pretty good then. That's a pretty tricky pose for sure, at least for me. Would be hard to do without a ref.

No problem man.

Eric-3 In reply to MD5-Mobstar [2017-12-25 17:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, tricky for me too. Clearly.
Thanks though. I appreciate it.

I try to minimize my use of references for poses. I think it would generally make my poses too normal or stiff. I wanna do action, dynamic poses, and unorthodox angles. Relying on references would restrict me too much.
Though I don't say this as advice, since this attitude also results in a lot of errors and bad habits.
It's just my preference. I'd rather my stuff be dynamic and flawed instead of boring and flawless.

MD5-Mobstar In reply to Eric-3 [2017-12-27 14:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I only try not to use refs these days strictly for the challenge I guess. I haven't done anything super dynamic lately so it's not much to brag about. Sometimes though even after all the mannequins on the scratch paper don't quite come out the way I want I gotta tap and go searching for a ref. It levels you up sometimes.

Eric-3 In reply to MD5-Mobstar [2017-12-28 18:35:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't mean there's anything wrong with using references. It's probably the best way to actually learn more efficiently. It's just a personal thing of me wanting to be more original. That attitude has caused trouble for me though.

I do use references, but I try to keep it minimal. I'm more likely to draw something and then check it against a reference (if I can even find something suitable), rather than base something off a reference from the start. Or I might use a reference for something generic, like just seeing the detail of an ear or whatever.

Whoa... I've never thought of Aerith as a badass, always seeing her as the beautiful, tragic lover with the incredible healing powers. This? This makes me a little afraid of the flower girl... her disheveled look, wild hair, and obvious hatred for Sephiroth makes her out to be this being of unmatched rage and power. As for the One Winged Angel himself? I dunno what to say... I always think of him as overrated until I see a piece of fanart like this or i watch Advent Children again. Excellent work on the whole piece!

Eric-3 In reply to StormieBreaksToys [2017-12-19 22:10:55 +0000 UTC]

I never saw Aerith as a badass either, but then that's why I wanted to do this. I like showing characters in different ways, even if (or especially because) it's not canon or reasonable.
Maybe it's kind of like how J Jonah Jameson sees Spider-Man, causing accidents and problems and then cleaning them up to look like a hero; Aerith goes around beating the hell out of people, but then patches them up to look like a healer.

I kinda feel Sephiroth is overrated too. I still love the game and think the characters are cool though.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate your thoughts.

Oh man... that's a helluva head canon... and brilliant! It's always cool seeing someone's interpretation of a character or seeing them in a new light. This is making me like her even more than I already do. Now I just need a full comic of video of her bashing Sephiroth's face in... over and over and over...

He really is. There were more compelling villains in other games, but its that he killed such an innocent and beloved character that made him infamous.Β

You're very welcome!

To add to that: why does she grow and sell flowers? To sell them to her victims' family and friends so that they can lay them on their graves. She's totally hustling Midgar.

I think this guy has some of the most creative customs I've seen. There's a Nemesis and Tyrant too. It's near the bottom of the list though.

Yeah...yeah, let's go with that. That's much less incriminating of an explanation than what I had in mind.

That's one of the things I like about creation systems. Working within the limitations of what you're given forces you to improvise and find clever solutions.
