Description
Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI.I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VI, but I had no intention of drawing anything for it. This was inspired by Poets of the Fall's music video for their song "Daze". I never heard of this band before, but the video just popped up as a recommendation on Youtube and I clicked it because the thumbnail looked cool.
I immediately loved the song itself. Heck, I wanted to buy the album on disc after hearing some of the other songs too, but it's an import for me and I couldn't find a decent price for it.
In addition to the song though, I also loved the jester(?) character of the singer. The design was cool and, combined with the design, the personality conveyed from the body language and facial expressions totally made me think of Kefka. He came off as pompous, arrogant, sinister, maniacal, destructive...it was perfect.
As if that wasn't enough, some of the lyrics were really fitting (like "Set the world on fire"). It was practically screaming at me to do something with this.
As this was done solely because I saw that video, I based Kefka off of the lead singer Marko Saaresto/the jester. I'm horrible with likenesses though, so it probably doesn't look much like him. I did purposely alter some things, but other inaccuracies to his likeness were not intentional.
I didn't want to use the more recent Dissidia Kefka designs and wanted to go to the original Yoshitaka Amano work instead. The problem with trying to draw from Amano's designs though is that the design isn't consistent between the pictures. So if one picture doesn't have all the reference I need (like if the angle doesn't show something) and I need another picture, the designs in those those multiple pictures aren't going to match up. Heck, even in-game, his design wasn't consistent.
So I mostly based this design off a single Amano work. I just chose the one I liked most. I did take little elements from other designs though, and made up a bit myself.

Thanks for the fave.
I had to use reference for the face shading. I think it would've turned out quite a bit worse if I did it on my own.

Reference is a wonderful thing. I sometimes use Senshistock for pose ideas.

Reference can help a lot. It's just a personal preference of mine that I want to do things myself as much as possible and only use reference when I'm really stuck. Though that also explains why I make so many mistakes.
Senshistock? Oh, yeah, I've seen those. I've saved a few of their things over the years.

JericaWinters In reply to Eric-3 [2018-05-29 10:43:48 +0000 UTC]
That's a good idea; to use it as a last resort. When I do use reference, I try and make small changes (and often big changes) to the pose so that it will look different from the work of others who reference the pose.

Eric-3 In reply to JericaWinters [2018-05-30 20:55:02 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's a part of why I try to avoid reference when I can. I value originality more than technical skill (though I think both are important), so an easy way to be more original is to just do as much as I can by myself.
Are you referencing poses for the ideas, or for the demonstration of how it's supposed to look? Like anatomy and proportion and stuff?
If it's for the ideas, have you tried using things like poseable figures?
π: 0 β©: 1
JericaWinters In reply to Eric-3 [2018-06-01 13:49:25 +0000 UTC]
I reference for ideas mostly. I'll take some elements of the pose and change things about it. I study the anatomy and proportions. I had a poseable wooden figure but I don't know what I did with it (it's only good for proportions though, not much help for anatomy).

I remember playing a chunk of it as Final Fantasy III on SNES, but I didn't beat it then since I wasn't experienced with RPGs. I didn't finish it until I came back several years later on the PS1 version.

Cool.
Yeah, when I went back to it with more experience with the genre, I just crushed it because I got so overpowered.
Actually, it was the same with Final Fantasy VII. I didn't beat it the first time I played through. Then I revisited it years later and just demolished the final boss because I got overpowered. Still never beat Ruby or Emerald Weapon though.

It is an alternative and I'm sure most people would be good with it. I guess I'm just one of those old-fashioned weirdos that usually prefers physical over digital though.

It can be a bother sometimes, yeah. For one, I've long since run out of space on my shelf for more CDs.
Still, I overall prefer having a physical copy or it feels like I don't really have it. And for games, my connection isn't very fast and it's a pain to download large games.
I didn't notice before; is that Sephiroth in your avatar?

I see. I still have lot of cds, but most of their content I have on my laptop as well.Β
As for games, I really prefer ones that come with a physical cartridge, even if they cost a pretty penny,Β
but I really like those old school games for my Nintendo DS. Sadly, those are a thing of the past mostly.Β
Yeah, that's Sephiroth.

Eric-3 In reply to Miarath [2017-11-13 16:11:21 +0000 UTC]
While I prefer having physical copies of games, it was nice getting some digital PS1 games on my PS3. It is more convenient in some ways and definitely cheaper. It was a nice way to play some old favourites or discover great games I missed when they first came out.
I'd like to have a DS partly for playing old games like that, but I don't have the time for more than one system at a time.
Aha. I didn't notice before because it didn't occur to me that the character's back was turned. I thought it was some faceless creature.
I currently happen to be working on a picture with Sephiroth. Weird, Final Fantasy VII is one of my favourite games, but this is the first time I've really drawn him. The only other time was like 18 years ago and it was only half his face.

I know it is great being able to play old games, again in some cases for me -- and some, I had never the chance to play, just say Final fantasy VIII.
Back than I had bought the game after seeing that the demo worked fine on my PC but the game itself would not work.
Which is one reason I stopped playing PC games other than small things like board games that come with the OS.
Was great to play Final Fantasy VII on my PSP after what felt like twenty+ years ago.
π: 0 β©: 1
Eric-3 In reply to Miarath [2017-11-15 23:10:15 +0000 UTC]
That's exactly why I stopped playing PC games too! It was always a hassle trying to get things to work. It would seem like nothing wanted to run properly or easily.
I played Final Fantasy VIII back then, on PS1, but didn't beat it since I wasn't too experienced with RPGs at the time. I played VII before that and didn't beat that the first time either.
I only revisited VII a few years ago, and that's when I finally beat it (I demolished Sephiroth because I got so overpowered while doing all the side stuff that I could ).
Some people will say things like VII is just nostalgia and it's not really that great, but I actually got more of an appreciation for it after revisiting it a few years ago. Now that I understand the systems more, I enjoyed it even more than the first time. It has flaws, but it's a lot of fun.
It's also funnier than I remember.

Well, I've played lots of FF Vii back then, but never finished, because I got bored of it right before the final fight. ;/
I've spend many hours just breeding and racing chocobos I think.Β
To be honest I'm a really on- and off gamer when it comes to these things, meaning I play either for several hours a day or not at all.
I get excited quickly but tend to get bored all that often too, tend to switch games, too.
π: 0 β©: 1
Eric-3 In reply to Miarath [2017-11-18 15:46:12 +0000 UTC]
Wait, you mean you haven't beaten Final Fantasy VII even to this day?
I aim to finish games if I paid for them, and one at a time. If I switch before I'm done, I think I might lose momentum or interest.
That's just me though. As long as you're having fun however you're playing, I think that's the important part.

Well, as I say if I play I play all day long for weeks, months etc -.-Β
and than I get bored and put it away for a while, or pick up another one.
I suppose it has something to do with trying out all the things and finding all the treasure you can --
and well, I sadly tend to play till my hands hurt.

Dude! Just... damn! This is epic. The detail is incredible (which I've come to expect from you, sorry ) but its not just that, it's that you made Kefka even more imposing and villainous. The song is truly fitting for the clown too. I think you captured the lead singer just right, especially that psychotic look he kept flashing through the video. The lines in his face and detail in his eyes is a dead ringer. Absolutely epic work!

That psychotic look was definitely the thing that tied the inspiration together. I don't think I would've been so compelled to do the picture if the video didn't have that.

I actually had a few clown ideas floating around. Others were Needles Kane (often referred to as Sweet Tooth, from Twisted Metal) combined with Joker, and another was Pennywise as he came up in that DA mashup event thing. I settled on Kefka because of that video though, and now I think another clown would be too much too soon.

Hmm... well it might be too soon, right this second, but maybe in a week or two? I think it would be a cool series. Terrifying, but cool nonetheless hahaha! The Sweet Tooth/Joker mashup would be really interesting. Honestly, I have no opinion on Pennywise, but that's apparently just me

I still might consider the Sweet Tooth/Joker one, but I'm working on some other stuff right now that I'd like to finish first.
I never read or watched It; I have no opinion on Pennywise either.
I was only considering it because he came up in that mash-up thing as I was spinning that generator over and over.

I never saw the new one. It just doesn't appeal to me. I did the generator thing a few times, but I've yet to actually draw anything from it. Maybe I will, I did get some funny ideas.

I have multiple projects that are almost done being sculpted, Kain Highwind, a Splatoon Inkling, Mega Charizard Y, and Snorlax. Natsu Dragneel is in mid-sculpt, but on hold because I'm not pleased with his pants, they need more definition. The wife's Christmas present has a basic body with details being sculpted over and smoothed off. There's only 3 weeks left for me to finish three projects and I know I can do it, especially once my classes end for the semester.
Yeah, that was my problem too. That and the fact that I kept getting Pennywise... I did get a couple funny ones, but not sure if I'll ever get around to actually doing them.Β
