Description An herbivorous species from the setting's rift lowlands, the species rarely has contact with the indigenous humans of the setting who inhabit the highlands. When erosion causes highland territory to collapse in such a way that the difference in elevation becomes more gradual is about the only time that high land inhabitants and lowland inhabitants encounter each other. The animals of the lowlands are highly dangerous but their remains are valued for materials for armor and weapons.
Shelled Diggers have some affiliation with earth magic, which aids them in digging hiding holes at night. The sand that collects on their crystalline back structures can serve a defensive purpose. As a last resort the creature can superheat its gems for a moment, heating and expanding the sand and soil deposits remaining and creating a small volcanic explosion, burning enemies and creating a smokescreen. In spite of their heavy defenses, they are shy creatures and slow to provoke into attack.

Anyone out there want to suggest a better name? I'd appreciate it.

It's not bad, but there are a number of things in the setting that could hold that name just as easily - though I haven't designed any others yet - it also feels just a bit weird to use a scientific name in a fantasy setting.
I may play with trying to figure out how to fuse crystal with ankylosaurus though...
