Hi Eric,

I'm looking for bloop creature related art for a web series about acoustical science mysteries - specifically for an episode about the bloop.Β

I really liked your image and would like toΒ get your permission to use it in the episode.Β

If so, could I get you to sign a material release?Β

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Brett JoffeΒ

The general consensus among the NOAA is that the sound is an Ice Quake, since it produces similar signals to theΒ A53a Calving. The theory that it came from an animal was theorized by David Wolman, and it is based on the fact that the sound produces aΒ rapid variation frequency, which at the time in 1997, was mostly found in animals. Many years have passed though, and we do find rapid variation frequencies in geological phenomena. It's origins are still debated, but the organism theory doesn't really hold much weight anymore.

The Bloop is an ultra low frequency sound, so it was sped up 16 times to make it more audible to human ears, which is why it sounds like a big bubble popping. The real sound is almost inaudible to humans. Many of the videos on YouTube claiming to be versions of the sound in real time are faulty, since they slow down the sped up sound, but fail reduce the pitch back to normal, so the frequency is about 16 times higher than it should be.

That is so not good at all. I think no one should go into the ocean EVER again simply because of THAT.

Sometimes I imagine if there is something like that in the Devil's Triangle or the Bermuda. Although scientists say it's most likely electromagnetic whatever, we haven't explored that area "too" much. In fact, we've barely explored our oceans. We know more about the moon.

Oh! Now I get the name! I watched a documentary on that sound a year ago. Maybe it's the long lost relative of the world's most loneliest whale?

:3 The sound was much larger than a whale could ever be

Some scientists suspect it's from icebergs....but what kind of iceberg goes "bloop"?Β
