More notes about the unimaginatively named "Magicostumes" brand Halloween costumes:
Because magic makes anything possible, you can find a Magicostume(TM) that alters your apparent shape in any way you like, no matter how extreme. Instead of looking "realistic", the costumes are designed to blatantly violate the laws of physics.
The snake costume comes out of the box as a 9-foot-long sleeve of fabric. You step into it and pull it up to your waist, and you'll see that it's already made your lower half skinnier than your upper half. (You may need someone to finish buttoning it up for you the first few times you put it on; with practice, you can do it from the inside.) The costume is no wider than your head anywhere along its length, but somehow your whole body is contained within it. The costume bends in ways that your body doesn't. You may need practice slithering around, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. If for any reason you need to use your hands, just unbutton one button and slip your arm out. There are also pockets on the inside of the costume, for your house keys, smart phone, and anything else you might need if you're going trick-or-treating. Filling those pockets won't give the costume any noticeable extra bulges; remember, the costume's shape on the outside doesn't conform to what's inside.
The mermaid costume is made of shiny green fabric, and can be worn like a pair of overalls. Mylie wasn't sure how she could go trick-or-treating around the neighborhood in a costume with no legs, but the instructions on the box assured her that magic would take care of any and all logistical problems. "Besides, mermaids don't walk, they swim."
Sure enough, she has no problem getting around in the mermaid costume. Inside the costume, she's standing on her legs, like always. But outside the costume, her legs are completely undetectable. This makes her appear to be impossibly balanced on the tips of those skinny tail fins. If she stands on her tiptoes, the costume doesn't reach the ground at all. When she walks, the tail sways from side to side in time with her invisible footsteps, as if she were swimming through the air. You can pass a hoop around her from head to tail, and you'd be convinced she's hovering in midair without any support.
She can't explain how it works; it just does. Imagine seeing her floating outside your front door on Halloween night! It certainly seems to be blowing the minds of the boys in the snake and faun costumes.
