Description My muse as been on Angelus Dei lately, thanks to callisto-chan trying to marathon finish Aspera Virtus.  As such, I've been thinking a lot about interactions between her characters and mine, and how her characters would react to meeting some of mine.    It's reminded me of characters I generally don't think about, like the dragon Metallica and the unicorn Tiana, but today I reminded myself of this character, the fairy Ruby.

Ruby has a somewhat minor role in the first book, and probably in the overall story, unless I find a place for her.  She's a fairy the group meets when Aria has her mind controlled fairies attack the capital, except she wasn't under the mind control.  She took a liking to Buttercup, sort of, since I tended to forget I even had her while I was writing.  Good job, right?

I knew she was supposed to be in the subsequent books as well, but I didn't have a real role for her until now.  Much like Metallica becomes Ignatius' Sacred Dragon (as it's spoiled in the current epilogue), Ruby becomes Aria's Sacred Fairy.  A Sacred Fairy is extremely rare, mostly because they're hand chosen by Aria herself, and most of the time, the Temples just focus on Sacred Hummingbirds, as they are a dime a dozen.  She's basically Aria's constant companion, although Aria allows her to roam as she wants, as well as send her out on her own missions, so to speak.

In the story, Ruby is described as wearing leaves, but when I initially drew her clothes like that, I didn't like it.  The idea here is that, as the Sacred Fairy, she's given really tiny cloth clothes, and I have to say, the dress looks adorable on her.    Maybe not very medieval, but it works, since Aria gave them to her.

I tried to stick close to her original coloration, which I thought had more red in it.  Go figure.  I have her an olive complexion just to add to the variety already there, and fairies do actually have pointed ears, although not as longated as elves.  They're just hidden in her hair.  And yesh, they have antenna.  Its actually something I had in the original design that I rather liked.

But, um, yeah,  Random little Ruby that turned out entirely too adorable.

This was pleasantly unexpected. When you say your muse is on AD (because of AV), I don’t usually expect random character pictures. Truth be told, I kind of forgot about Ruby as well, since she was so minor, but I can’t really speak when it comes to introducing minor characters pretty late in the game. >.< For some reason when she was first introduced, I was picturing her like…a fairy Buttercup, same sort of wavy red hair and pale skin (not necessarily kohl). I don’t know why, and the fact that she didn’t have much of a role didn’t help.So to see her with olive skin, and less of a stereotypical redheaded look is a surprise. A nice one, though, I like it. I like the way you managed to make her into a Sacred Fairy though! That’s a nice touch.

Her design is really cute too! I could see how it would be hard to design something out of leaves (I’m tempted to try, but I think it would be hard to design something to accommodate the wings too!) so I can’t blame you for not liking how it turned out. This looks cute! I can’t imagine how difficult it would be for someone to make such a teeny-tiny dress, but people have done it before. Also, they’re doing it for the Sacred Fairy, probably the first one in many generations, so it’s totally worth it. >.>

I also like how her wings look like leaves, and the little antennae! I’m not sure what you mean by “original design”, unless I’m drastically forgetting something, but hey, if it works, it works. She definitely looks super cute, which is important for a fairy, don’t you know? >.> It’s great to see more AD/MD art, even if it’s minor. Nothing wrong with that!

While I realize you mean Ruby is unexpected, I don’t think you should be all that surprised that I did something AD related.  My muse tends towards it whenever there’s a new AV chapter, and I get to thinking about our little crossover in one of the books, and then I start thinking about Coral’s reactions to my characters, and then I’m reminded of characters like Ruby here.  But yeah, sadly, Ruby is sort of a forgettable character, since she was so minor in the first book.  But yeah, I knew she wasn’t a ‘fairy Buttercup’, since I knew her hair was more on the actual red side, but I wasn’t sure what she looked like beyond that.  It was as I was working on this that I came up with the ideas, other than her hair color, and I like them.  And yeah, I figure if Metallica would (eventually) become a Sacred Dragon, then Ruby could become a Sacred Fairy.

She did turn out adorable, though!  I think I was trying to do something similar to what they did with Tinker Bell in her new movies, since her dress is made of leaves, but I couldn’t master it without outright copying that.  I don’t think it’d necessarily be difficult for anyone to make her a teeny tiny dress, considering she got it from Aria, and Aria would just will the dress into existence.  But yeah, if it came down to it, no one would mind trying to make it, since, yeah, she’s the first Sacred Fairy in hundreds of years.

I didn’t mean to make the wings look like leaves, but it just happened.  They’re supposed to just have veins within them, and then I saw I had made them green, and…yeah.  The original design I’m referring to is the picture I had done of her in 2002, which I guess I should scan in and show off.   But yeah, this turned out so much better than expected.    Yay for cute fairies!
