Wow Erin. This is really good and useful. But I wish you made a video about it... It would be more helpful.

This is the only good tutorial for digital painting scars. Thank you so much for making this.
Do you happen to have any experience drawing large scars? Or burn scars?

Thank you -- I'm glad you've found it helpful!
I'm afraid I don't have specific experience with that. I imagine that larger scars would be similar and I think that burn scars leave an area of skin that is a different tone and shinier, but in both cases, I would definitely recommend looking for reference. Art is above all teaching yourself to see.
Sorry that wasn't much help!

I ended up just doing a few thin scars instead in the area. They look pretty nice.
Again, your tutorial is the most helpful out of all the ones I found on dA. lol

What about flat burn scars that are more than just a line?

First, sorry for the super late reply!
I am afraid I will not be of much help with that. The key will be to look at plenty of reference and then find a way to recreate that. Sorry, I know that is vague, but that is all that I did here, looking both at photo reference and especially in person to see how light interacts with the different skin.
Good luck!

I don't in my paintings. Nothing against doing so, but I am determined to learn how to actually paint things and not rely on textures or anything else as a crutch.

Yeah, exactly, and also if one's style is painterly textures seem sort of jarring and out of place with everything else.
