Please let me explain.I know Javert is a 52-years old, UGLY guy.
But he's my favourite character in Les Mis. Therefore, I idealize. A lot. I did the same with Snape.
Besides, why can't he have been a young, rather attractive (IMO) person, some years ago?
Now that I think of it, my favourite chars in the Harry Potter series were Snape and Luna and, in Les MisΓ©rables, Javert and Eponine. I can see a pattern...
By the way, my Javert has no ponytail because I read the book before even knowing a musical -with a ponytail- existed.
...Oh well, excusatio non petita, accusatio manifesta, isn't it?

Who says Javert is ugly?! For instance, Perkins!Javert and Quast!Javert aren't half bad-looking (and they have lovely eyes). But seriously, I never found his description in Hugo's novel ugly, in fact, it has its charm.

i have to agree, i mean...even the way hugo describes him...it's not IDEAL but he never goes out and says he's ugly. Brutish yes. Compares him to an animal a lot. Plus Javert is so darn cute, the way he goes around trying to be all professional, with so much fail. Very cute

Maybe I'm a naive reader, but the way he spoke and behaved at the Gorbeau house and at the barricade made me think "what a waste it is to kill this guy". I mean, he's not just a blind servant of the law. He's got a damn personality! ...I adopted him. I'm in love

It would most likely depend on who the OC is and what they're like.
Weell, I'd say that, if the author hasn't been around for a really long time, and if you credit their work with at least a link, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't really think there's anyone who'd WANT you to take one of your deviations down. ^-^
