Description Helpless
There is only one way to go to heaven.
And just like everything else in life, it is not fair.
Out of all 8 billion people on the planet,
There is only one who can send you there.

An illustration for the prologue.

A very well done example of sadness and helplessness. Also great work on the wings.

I love the emotional aspect of this piece. You've captured despair and helplessness very well. The way she's folded in on herself yet holding her head in her hands is nicely done, with the open wings being an interesting counterpoint. Pointed down as they are, though, they certainly illustrate the hopelessness she must feel. (I'm assuming it's a she from the shape of the legs - apologies if that's incorrect.)

The separate effects for creating ripples in the water are an interesting touch, though I personally find them a bit distracting from the message of the piece. The alternating zig-zag pattern combined with the circular ripples makes me focus more on the reflection, and I don't think that was the intent. That's mostly a personal preference though. As far as the technical aspect of the ripples, the only thing I would point out there is to question what's causing them. Ripples move outward from the point of origin, so if her toes are causing the ripples, I would expect to see some a little closer to her feet, and with the pattern moving away from her feet rather than toward them. Still, that could be why she's doubled over this way - perhaps something that went into the water in front of her created the ripples, and its (their?) loss is something she finds difficult to bear. If it was meant to create  questions in the viewer, then it has definitely achieved that!

I do like the storybook feel of this illustration as well - the "sketchy" aspect to it that gives it an energy. It's almost as though the softer lines of the piece are caused by the character's shaking and her distraught emotional state. It's definitely an interesting way to convey emotion, and I think it works well here.

Overall, thanks so much for sharing! (I found your work through ProjectComment .)

I love how dramatic this is. I can almost feel her pain through my computer screen. I like how her reflection is rippled, it looks cool for one. For another I think it really helps drive home her state of mind.

I suppose, something that I think could be improved on is her wings. I only really notice when I get up close but the shading on her feathers could be smoother. It'd make her feathers look more realistic and potentially prettier. I do enjoy the high contrast shading on them, and look forward to seeing more from you

Also this story looks really interesting.

First off, I would like to say the colors here are absolutely spot-on. All very subtle tones, but all of them create a mood that's just right for this piece. The details in this piece are impressive. From the reflection, to the feather and even the little strands of hair cascading from her face. Each little detail seems well thought-out and carefully placed.
If I had to critique something about this piece, I would probably focus on the lighting and the text. The lighting, for one, because your light source seems to be coming from behind her and lightly above, hence the lighter spot around the text, yet the front of her body seems just a little too bright for that. I think, for your purpose, it would make the piece a a little more dramatic if the brightness and contrast were toned down a little more on the legs. Now, the second critique just comes from personal preference, so feel free to ignore it, but I think it would look lovely if you hand-painted the text or made it look more hand-painted. There's just something to be said for brush strokes/calligraphy text in paintings like this, and I think something that looks more hand-written would make the lettering seem less generic/printed.
Overall, Helpless is an amazing painting. Your proportions are spot on and the coloring is lovely. I look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you so much for the thorough feedback!!

I can see how the lighting may be off. I was considering that the light bounced off of the watery surface and reflected back onto her body, but it does seem too bright to be a mere reflection. Thank you very much!

I really appreciate it
