And here I was getting my hopes up thinking you were a starfighter...The expression fits the bill

Heh, For a while the idea for the movie was to do "The Old Man and the Sea" but in space.

That seems a bit uncomfortable We finally get to see mysterious Ken's face
Your backyard seems strange; filled with lots of peculiar things

Ha ha, yep, it was.

It is always filled with peculiar things. We even have our microwave out there. heh.

Well, anything for the film

What? your microwave? that is peculiar hehehehehe ^_^

ErnestAbacus In reply to Sir-Pumpkinhead [2008-01-31 23:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Studio lights have weakened our circuit breakers, so the microwave kept overloading the kitchen circuit. Our solution: use the outside outlets. It works out ok. he he. (We just don't use it in the rain.)

Heehee, your backyard looks fun. The man is almost hidden in the machine, the subject is almost obscured by the picture. Nifty picture.

Yep, I like the fuzzy camera and the distracting wallspace to the left. This picture was one of my favorites because it showed the chaos and clutter as well as the reason why.

This was months ago... the backyard has only just recovered.

I will post pictures of some of the models made for the effects shots later. Couch Chris might not want to do that before the film is done though. Actually he might put that on dA. He just got into dA film.

haha...this shot is like pulling back from the movie scene, reminding us that no matter how intense it is on film, in reality, it was held together with duct tape.

looks like you guys had an awesome time on set

ErnestAbacus In reply to smoldering075 [2008-01-29 18:58:53 +0000 UTC]

We did. The backyard was never messier. heh. It was cool to have a set that wasn't just a room with the right props. The whole contraption was supported by pieces of a broken fooseball table. The trashcan that made the hull of the ship was not good for the tape to stick too and it was damp out, so we used up two roles of tape a day even after it was first put together.

smoldering075 In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-30 01:07:35 +0000 UTC]

haha...Duct Tape should go to you when looking for its next spokesperson....assuming they had a first one already...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to smoldering075 [2008-01-30 02:44:15 +0000 UTC]

... I think that the idea of a duct tape spokesperson has come up before... Frankly, for someone who is not in the duct tape industry having that come up more than once is strange.

Have you ever seen duct tape advertised? Are there competing brands? Is the term a trademark?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

smoldering075 In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-30 14:40:06 +0000 UTC]

It's fate then.

I've never seen a duct tape advertisement...maybe it's one of those things that are so ubiquious it doesn't need an advertisement...I think it's a brand name. at least, the one manufacturer I do see around acts like it's the only Duct Tape around...hmmm...I would think there would be more competition....at least a Staples or Sam's Club generic brand somewhere...

Me being dorkish and all...I just Wiki-ed it and here's the result [link]

Kind of funny article It was first patented by the military, and named for use in air ducts, which apparently is the only time you can't use duct tape...

ErnestAbacus In reply to smoldering075 [2008-01-30 17:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Uh-oh!

I think you are correct. It is odd though. Dozens of companies make screws and nails that are all basically the same... who pattented duct-tape?

Seems like you have all sorts of fun there. I'd really love to shoot a film once - not necessarily in front of the camera, though.

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-26 23:44:38 +0000 UTC]

I am usually a behind the scenes type. I do a lot of last minute fill-ins for student projects. I am not much of an actor, but for most of what is required in a student film I am indistinguishable from the professionals. (the proffesionals in student films, I mean.) Which just goes to show how little student films depend upon acting.

We do have fun here, but the chaos leaves long, tired, messy weeks in it's wake.

This is a local film school? Shouldn't convey surprise, I just want to know what to imagine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-27 00:07:23 +0000 UTC]

It's nearby. Actually I think it is the biggest California State School. They teach just about everything. Steven Spielberg dropped out of the film school there. Here we have Cal State Universities, and Universities of California. UC's are slightly more prestigious than CSU's... (I'm confused just typing this.) Cal State Long Beach is currently changing in to UC Long Beach. So, it is local, but it is also big. Makes sense?

Oh, and for your imagination, it has a big blue pyramid in the middle. Actually [link]

charonferryman In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-27 00:10:02 +0000 UTC]

Makes no sense (my brain is looping), but the pyramid is great

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-27 00:45:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it makes much sense either. Universities are a big part of California politics, and therefore the wording is not allowed to be easily understandable.

They play basketball in that pyramid, and when there is lightning (shich is rare) a club holds seances.

charonferryman In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-27 01:01:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, our bureaucracy drove Kafka to write his stories. You can still see traces of that whenever you enter offices and a university campus somewhere in Austria. I know everything about not-understandable (except how to understand it, of course).

Seances? An Occultist Club?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-27 01:09:51 +0000 UTC]

... being near the bureaucracy that drove Kafka souns terrifying. It probably isn't, but I choose to believe that it is a purely horrific place.

Yep. Actually it's mostly a scryer's club, but they meet with a spiritist group. For a while that scryer's club was a class at the university.... but only for a little while. (It sounds like a sit-com doesn't it?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

charonferryman In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-27 01:17:06 +0000 UTC]

I saw an office-type person at the main railway station in Delhi that looked like he was taken straight out of Kafka (the Indian Kafka, of course) - hawk nose, sly and quick eyes, the placative and quick smile that so many Indians who want to cheat you have, black moustache, round glasses, big head on a scrawny neck...

Austrian bureaucrats are mostly lazy and incapable nowadays - I suppose the old Austro-Hungarian bureaucracy was a little worse.

What happens if you wanted to graduate with a degree in scrying?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-27 01:29:18 +0000 UTC]

See... that's creepier than it should be thanks to Franz Kafka.

I doubt that a degree in scrying was offered, just a class and a club for continued study. Like the Kung Fu class.

charonferryman In reply to ErnestAbacus [2008-01-27 01:37:28 +0000 UTC]

Then I should probably never invite you to come for a visit to see the lovely grey corridors, closed doors and phlegmatic bureaucrats of Austrian offices, should I? They might be wearing grey and dark suits and then again they might not.

I was thinking it was something like that, but one can always hope for a little bit of absurdity.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErnestAbacus In reply to charonferryman [2008-01-27 16:56:42 +0000 UTC]

I hope for that quite often. I think the last parapaychology degree ever awarded from an accredited University in the US was in the late seventies... actually it might have been the only one, it was an intermural degree awarded from Berkely.... so it almost doesn't count.

Oh Well.

haha that's cute, you look like such a crazy scientist/engineer Ken
i wonder how can that be that you are not certainly sure who took the photo was a camera migrating from one hands to another or something, or are those two alternate versions of events depending on who's asking

ErnestAbacus In reply to barbarasobczynska [2008-01-26 20:06:05 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha.. yeah, the camera was being passed about. Ha ha.. I wish it were the latter option though. That would be good.

I have found that I play crazy more than anything else when I act...

It's a closeup shot for a one man submarine movie. It's a silent-soviet-propaganda-anti-war-comedy. I play an undersea explorer that is forced into naval combat. The hokey special effects are being shot this weekend. (It's going to be awesome.)
