Description --Madara Uchiha--

Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara), who posed as Tobi[1] (トビ) when first introduced, is a founder of Konohagakure and Akatsuki, and the former leader of the Uchiha clan. When he joined Akatsuki as Tobi (replacing Sasori), he was partnered with Deidara, revealing himself as Madara after Deidara's death. He was once the Mizukage of Kirigakure, although it is unknown when.

Background
Decades before the start of the series, Madara grew up in constant competition with his younger brother, Izuna Uchiha, who were both known as the most gifted members of their clan. Their competition led to both gaining the Mangekyo Sharingan, and, with it, they were able to take control of the Uchiha clan, Madara acting as its leader. Even by his clan's standards, Madara's chakra was unusually strong. Under his leadership, the clan conquered all they came across, but, over time, he began to lose his sight because of the Mangekyo Sharingan. To regain his vision, he took his brother's eyes (an act Madara said his brother had consented to), allowing him to continue to lead the Uchiha to prosperity.

In the years that followed, the Uchiha constantly clashed with the equally powerful Senju clan. To bring an end to the constant fighting, the leader of the Senju, Hashirama Senju, approached Madara with an offering of peace. Although Madara never wanted peace with the Senju, the rest of the Uchiha wanted to end the fighting, and Madara had no choice but to go along with their decision. The Senju, the Uchiha, and all the clans they had conquered came together to form the village of Konohagakure. Against Madara's wishes, the villagers selected Hashirama as the village's First Hokage. Madara feared that Hashirama would oppress the Uchiha, and tried to rally support for challenging his leadership. Rather than help him, however, the Uchiha turned their backs on him, believing his only motive was greed.

Abandoned by his clan, Madara left the village so that he could return to challenge Hashirama in battle. They fought at the site that would someday be called the Valley of the End, where, although Madara called upon the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, he was defeated, and was believed to have died. Madara faded into memory, and, in time, would found Akatsuki and become Kirigakure's Mizukage.

Twelve years before the start of the series, the demon fox attacked Konoha. Although Madara denied having had any involvement in the attack, Itachi Uchiha and Minato Namikaze said that the demon fox was under Madara's control at the time. A few years later, he infiltrated Konoha to try and rekindle the flames of war. He was found by Itachi first, who convinced Madara to spare the village in exchange for helping to wipe out the Uchiha clan for deserting him decades earlier. Madara complied, training Itachi and providing assistance. Itachi never truly trusted Madara, however, and kept an eye on him for the rest of his life.

Tobi
To keep in Akatsuki's shadow, Madara eventually took on the disguise of Tobi,[1] giving orders to Pain in secret. He wears an orange, swirl-patterned mask that reveals only his right eye. When he trained Itachi, he wore a slightly different mask with black swirl-like patterns on it, and his hair was cut a little shorter. His hair is cut down completely from the days of Konoha's founding, and he wears a uniform consisting of a number of bolts and pins, which is usually concealed by his Akatsuki cloak.

While acting as Tobi, he is carefree and goofy, something that annoys most of the other members. Deidara, who believed all within Akatsuki should be serious and calm, was not pleased with Tobi's childish personality, and frequently attacked the latter in a comedic fashion when annoyed. Apparently, Madara is very committed to keeping his identity secret, as he has been seen keeping up his goofy appearance even when no-one was around (at least during the anime's filler arc). Kisame and Zetsu, on the other hand, somewhat appreciate Tobi's ability to brighten up a gloomy organization such as theirs.

Personality
Madara exhibits a very calm and serious personality. He speaks with less formal diction, such as not using honorifics, and shows typically "villainous" arrogance. He spoke down to Pain (going so far as to refer to him as a "minion") and has great faith in his own abilities, only acting polite to Sasuke Uchiha. He will abandon his normal personality in favor of the Tobi personality when the situation calls for it, as he did when distracting a group of Konoha ninja.

Madara has shown great ability in manipulating others to do his work for him. Minato believed that he was using Pain's ideology against him in order to control him. He similarly befriended Sasuke in order to get him to join Akatsuki by telling him about Itachi's past, even though he has an apparent interest in Sasuke and his abilities. While Akatsuki's goal to gain the tailed beasts is believed by most of the members to be a step in gaining control over the world, Madara implied that the real reason is to restore his Sharingan's power.

Tobi is somewhere in my solid top 3 fav ninja in Naruto. I love the mystery of who he was, despite many of us figured it out already. I love to imagine just how powerful this one man could really be and how swift and awesome he was in fighting knowing that he is holding back.

I was perusing through you gallery and I LOVE your work, but this one just caught my eye, I think it's 'cause of the splattered orange spraying out from his mask - it just looks awesome! Really lovely work!

I really dig this piece!! Love the splashy watercolor look! I think it reflects his personality very well.
To comment seriously though, I have to say I'm not in love with that shadow. It isn't consistent with the rest of the drawing, especially in terms of it's neat, clean edge. And as a result I find it distracting. If you want to keep it, I recommend you rough up that edge and bring it farther down his left shoulder. But honestly, with the wonderful rough and immediate nature of this drawing, I don't think you need it at all. If it were my drawing I'd get rid of it entirely. The way you applied that bold orange and the darks of his coat gives enough sense of a light source and makes Tobi's image sit heavily on the picture already. And the two-toned background is distracting in a non-effective way as well. I'd leave it stark white to push the drama of the colors. But these are all just my opinions! I just wanted to leave some honest feedback!!

wow, so to comment seriously, after giving some ‘un-serious’ compliments is it?.... Haha, I know I know! well, thanks for your time and the lengthy comment. So this shadow is distracting for you,. this ‘shadow’ isn’t really a shadow, as far as consciously putting a shadow in is concerned…actually this was the product of process…, yes process. it was the bi-product of the multiplied, outline layer(if you are familiar with Photoshop jargon), so this was me hacking out a big ugly grey patch from the scanned outline layer. And it just so happens that this crudely cut section turned into a shadow like feature. No plan no thought behind this. You know, any other day I might have erased it completely,, but I didn’t here. You must know that with my work, and this series of work in particular, I aim for a loose, unpolished, messy kind of aesthetic. meaning I don’t care if something isn’t quite right,… and I don’t have to,.. as I am the creator. Sometimes,(and this is a personal creed here; I work by it often) I like to sit the ‘core’ or quality element of a piece within messy(or not so polished) surrounding or just a section you know. I leave working lines, I like to have imperfections(id go as far as to add some on occasions) and if something isn’t perfect, I may or may not change it. it’s what I like, and it’s what I like my work to look like. So this ‘shadow’ was left, as I wasn’t aiming for a shiny polished final, and it is evident in a lot of my work. As for the “two-tone background”, I don’t see what you are referring to…if anything it could be that your computers contrast/brightness is a tuned up a little.. so its picking up the details and things in the outline layer,,,,,,I don’t know. But yes, just a left element and not the focus a all…it seems to have taken yours.
Thanks for the honest feedback, it was good to think about my processes a little closer actually…and was quite fun writing this too.

also I’d like to add that some people find delight in imperfection, I being one of them. If anything I should have cut it more poorly, as to not give the impression of the shadow. A long time ago now, that’s hind sight for you.

Heehee I guess I just love to complement art I enjoy! And apparently talk about it!
After reading about your process, I definitely feel like I understand this piece so much better!! I didn't realize the shadow I was seeing was actually a bi-product of your creative process, like an underdrawing! That makes a lot of since now in terms of wanting to keep the "footprints" of the picture's development. Which, btw I also really enjoy art that does that! I think work like that comes across as very honest, you can tell there is a mind at work, and it's always fun to see how an artist began a piece. And sometimes it's more enjoyable to view a piece when it carries its imperfections with pride. I recently just did an ink drawing of a couple models and in the process dropped two big ink blots. But I like it still because as my processor put it, "it looks like a human made it." It was probably due to my limited experience in digital art that I simply didn't recognize the shadowy thing as an underdrawing. But I may not be the only one!! So I'm going to channel my art professor here and just say, sometimes it's good to ask yourself what is best for your drawing. I know, I know, WE are the artists and WE get to decide what the heck we want, when we want. But our relationship with our art should have a back-and-forth sometimes I think. Maybe in this case looking back, an extra moment to reflect on dear Tobi and consciously decide whether the "multiplied outline layer" is going to ultimately communicate "creative process" vs (in my case at least) "added shadow". As an artist, it's your prerogative to consider your viewer's interpretation however much or little you want. But I guess what I'd like to say is just be aware that there are dum dums out there like me who may not get it, haha. But then again you have every right not to care!! I think it's good advice to keep in mind though, if only to toss out. In the end, it is your style and your creation so ultimately as the artists that means you know best.
I hope I haven't come across in this discussion as making a big deal out of this minor thing (cuz really, it's NOT a big deal. Look at all the favs! ) But I WAS trying to use it as a (hopefully!!) fun departure point to talk about art in general. I only hope I didn't bore you!

Woah cool, its kinda... abstract. And I just have to say that has to be the longest artist note I've ever seen.
