what is the design in the middle?
what would it look like erased in the shape of a heart? or cross?

There is really no design in the middle--the idea was that the tally marks were "sins" that were "blotted" out or erased. Had to leave enough of the tally marks intact so that one could make out what the marks were. I think your suggestion is great and will investigate it. Maybe I will resubmit the picture. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

they represent the number of times sins have been committed. The white circles are forgiveness spreading out and obliterating the sins so they can neither be found or remembered.
