What's the cultural/linguistic/ethnic makeup of the Commonwealth?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Escodrion In reply to Smartguy725 [2019-04-24 14:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Fairly similar to that of the Russian empire. The biggest differences would be in Siberia, Buryatia, Jaxa and Green Ruthenia - more ethnic Poles, Ruthenians (Belarusian and Ukrainians), other Eastern Europeans and indigenous populations. That and the colonies in America and Africa.

I am in the process of making an ethnolinguistic map at the moment, although that will still take some time.

Not sure how such thinly populated areas as Perm, Kazan and Siberia don't fill up with Russians migrating east over time, but aside from that quibble, lovely map and scenario.

They are definitely populated quite a bit by people migrating from the west, but the idea was that Perm would be a haven for Uralic peoples and Kazan for Turkic peoples so quite a lot of them moved from over areas populated by these peoples. Siberia is mostly populated by settlers (Crown Lands of Siberia).

So just to recap, Poland ends up as a major european power instead of Russia, does the Polish elected King end up personally as autocratic as the Russian Tsars or do the various regions have their own local Polish style Senate running things sort of like a federalised Polish super-republic?

During the Time of Troubles Poland invades Russia, just as it did in our timeline. Polish king Władysław IV gets elected Tsar of All Rus' by the seven boyars and Russia becomes part of the Commonwealth with a similar status to that of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, it then gets split up into three separate Grand Duchies - Muscovy (dominated by the Russian population), Karelia (still mostly populated by Ugro-Finnic peoples) and Perm (Uralic peoples). From there on they follow a similar path as Russia, expanding into Siberia and subjugating all the lands as far as Alaska (not quite as far as the Russians got there, but still quite close).

Ducal Prussia and Livonia were fully incorporated into the Commonwealth, mostly to stop the territories from being absorbed by the Holy Roman Empire (which later collapsed under its own weight). The mostly German-speaking merchant classes have a large say in the running of these two duchies and they have quite a lot of liberties when it comes to trade with a functioning reborn Hanseatic League. Ducal Prussia is self-governed and Livonia is officially governed equally by the Crown of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, although in actual fact is more self-governed than it at first appears. The southern lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were later reorganised into the Grand Duchy of Ruthenia with the same powers as the other Grand Duchies. The southern parts of Ruthenia are mostly run by the Zaporozhian Cossacks as a semi-military state. They retain their stanitsa's  and their steppe lifestyle. They are often called upon to serve in military campaigns as they are very skilled fighters. There is also the Duchy of White Ruthenia which is jointly administered by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Grand Duchy of Muscovy. It was created after the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Tsardom of Russia ended as a compromise over the contested territories between the two Grand Duchies. To the east of Ruthenia is the Don Hetmanate - essentially a state run entirely by the Cossack military, similar to the Zaporozhian Cossacks. They are also called up to serve in military campaigns and a lot of the upper echelon of the Commonwealth's military gets trained there. Parts of it function as large-scale military testing ranges and training grounds, apart from the eastern parts which are inhabited by the Tatars and Kalmyks.

Then we have the two Khanates - Crimea and Kazan - remnants of the Golden Horde, they function similarly to the Duchies but are more traditionally Muslim in nature. Crimea retains a lot of the inner workings of the Ottoman Empire in its style of government, whereas Kazan is ruled more similarly to the post-Mongol Empire Khanates. The King retains the title of Khan in both these states, however he usually doesn't participate in government and religious meetings, due mostly to the difference in faiths. Crimea is actually ruled by a Grand Vizier and Kazan is ruled by a Tatar council.

Central Siberia is incorporated under the Crown Lands of Siberia, basically the entire territory is owned and administered by the Crown of Poland and the peoples there (mostly because there are so few of them) get little real say in how the Commonwealth is run, Siberia is also home to vast private noble estates. To the east of the Crown Lands of Siberia we have the Far Eastern states of Yakutia and Luoravetia (Kamchatka) - these are administered as Crown Colonies with a higher degree of autonomy than Siberia, but with even less say in the inner workings of the rest of the Commonwealth.

To the south of those there are the three autonomous states of Jaxa , Buryatia and Green Ruthienia (also known as Zielony Klin - literally 'the Green Wedge). Jaxa is a state created by Polish noble Nicefor Czernichowski  initially centred around the fortress of Albazino (renamed to Jaxa after the name of Czernichowski's coat of arms) it later expanded eastwards to the Amur River. It is populated mostly by pardoned renegades and local Manchu peoples and is almost entirely autonomous, but still nominally part of the Commonwealth - because of this, it also doesn't get much say in how the Commonwealth is run, but neither does the Crown get much say in how Jaxa is run. The real life story of the State of Jaxa is quite an interesting read too, certainly something quite unusual. Buryatia is an autonomous state centred around Lake Baikal and populated mostly by Buryats - a people related to the Mongols. They function similarly to Jaxa when it comes to outside interference and are ruled in a more traditionally Mongol-like fashion. Green Ruthenia is a state with a territory more or less the same as today's Primorsky Krai in Russia. It is populated mostly by Ruthenians (Ukrainians), Cossacks and Buryats, as well as local Manchu and Korean peoples. They function much the same as Jaxa, retaining a high degree of autonomy. The real-life story of Green Ruthenia is also quite interesting.

Then we have the overseas territories. The largest of these is Alaska which is subject to the Crown, much like Yakutia and Luoravetia. Alaska (as well as Luoravetia) is much more developed than in our timeline and the two states are connected by rail through a network of tunnels and bridges that cross the Bering Strait. It is also fairly rich, due to the large amount of natural resources that the country offers. Madagascar was purchased off the French in the 19th century and is also a Crown Colony. Cameroon is the Commonwealth's share in the Scramble for Africa (I chose it because it was explored by Polish explorers during the Scramble for Africa). The final Crown Colony is the state of Morska Wola (Polish Brazil) - purchased off the Portuguese, it covers a small territory in the state of Parana in Brazil (in this timeline - the Portuguese Colony of Rio de Janeiro). The Colonies don't get much say in the running of the Commonwealth, however they are fairly autonomous. The African colonies and Morska Wola are administered by the so called Maritime and Colonial League .

Then we come to the two remaining colonies that are administered by the Duchy of Livonia - as the successor state to the Duchy of Courland that originally colonised these two areas - i.e. the Gambia and Iera and New Courland (Trinidad and Tobago). These states are governed by the Hanseatic League and the Crown has little say in how they are governed.

Last of all is the Concession of Dalian - the Commonwealth's treaty port (similar to Hong Kong for the UK and Macau for Portugal) in China.

Now for the style of government - the King is still elected by the nobles in the Election Sejm, held in Warsaw in which nobles (so-called envoys) from the Grand Duchies participate. Each of the Grand Duchies is administered separately and the King has a mostly representative role - more or less the same as he had in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). Each part of the Commonwealth has its own Sejm - which functions as the parliament made up of the King (or his representative), the Chamber of Envoys (lower house) and the Senate (upper house), except for the parts of the Commonwealth which use a slightly different system as mentioned above. To that end, the Commonwealth functions similar to how the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth functioned in our timeline. However, there is no liberum veto which is quite a significant difference as things actually get done.

so no divisions of Poland, the Russian Bear has been neutered like a cat and I presume the Polish laws protecting religious freedoms have now spread across the whole Commonwealth? it looks like an optimistic world
