Description "At any given time today in America, there are about half a million people who are "homeless" -- they don't have a permanent, safe, decent, affordable place to live.” Around the world there are about 100 million homeless people, and many of them are women and children.
-- Robert Alan

"When we bear witness, when we become the situation — homelessness, poverty, illness, violence, death — the right action arises by itself. We don’t have to worry about what to do. We don't have to figure out solutions ahead of time. Peacemaking is the functioning of bearing witness. Once we listen with our entire body and mind, loving action arises."

Where did you shoot this? I hate homelessness (not the people that are homeless, but the fact that they are homeless). Of course, some of them - in fact, from what I hear, many of them, aren't as "homeless" as they appear.

When *alberah and I were at Georgia Tech the first time, we stayed in a high end convention complex. You know how I am...can't sleep....so I was up and outside taking photos at 2 or 3 am. This fellow was across the street on the steps of another multimillion dollar building.
Thank you for the .

That's really...interesting and cool in a sad sort of way (for the person in the photo - sad, for you a good photographic opportunity). It's a really nice photo. This is the kind of subject I think we should do a book about together - I can write things and we can both do photographs. That would fun. Of course, finding the time is an issue... We should collect photographs over a period of time concerning this issue and consider a book in the future. I think it would be a touching way to reach people. Maybe we could do some sort of charity thing with it, with proceeds going to shelters or centers in our area for homeless folks.

It is sad for the man on the steps.

A book like that would be fun and hopefully helpful to people. Its an issue we both care about too. Sometime we should get together and talk about it and develop some ideas. A loose framework would be helpful in getting the shots. I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find homeless people in B'ham.

This is one of the things that burn me up! One of the richest countries in the world and so many with so little! We give to all those other countries but withhold from our own!

Thanks so much for bringing this out and here for everyone to see... Too often we get too comfortable in our own little worlds and forget what is happening outside. I have families at my school who face this off and on all year... whole families sleeping in cars and in alleyways...

sincerly, I thought in USA ,this problem of homeless , of street lodgers, is allmost resolved ,or not so cruelly. in your country , the government offers social-protection measures ( I repeat, I just think that). In my country, the unemployed help is 200$/month . After a year , "see U later, aligator" . the streets becames brimful with homeless peoples. sad, like "streets of Philadelphia" song

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eskimoblueboy In reply to dancingwithpoison [2008-08-29 23:21:28 +0000 UTC]

It isn't resolved here. The life is just less harsh than other places. If you get money from the government, you have to have an address other than a street corner.
In terms of unemployment pay, I think it last 18 months here. Then it stops. There is also a cut off date for our general social well fair. That may be a year unless there are extenuating circumstances.

I totally agree. As a country, we throw away more than enough to help them. We have huge empty buildings, that will rot to the ground sitting empty. Schools have unused training facilities every weekend. I don't get it either.
Thank you for adding the shot to your favorites Evey.
