Great photo and great story. There is more than mere play to it, it's a real life story. Excellent lighting, contrast and DOF btw. Again your excellent work evokes very, very strong emotions. One can only admire your creativity and inspiration.

i worked to make it as aesthetically pleasing as i could, with all the lights, and shadows and DOF. but it's the story that i really wanted to show here. i wanted people to feel the drama of combat (though imagined). so i'm very happy you saw it and commented on it. thanks also for the kind words and the favorite 
btw, it's amazing how creativity and inspiration can come from the smallest things (e.g. plastic soldiers).

I really like very strong and emotive style of conveying your feelings and stories through your photos and ability to invoke strong emotions in others through it. That is what is art all about. Your photos show very much about you. I was really touched by this photo and I am amazed how you have managed to tell such a grave real-life story with a moral, with small toys and lighting. actually i was shooting my brother playing with his toys. and then the crazy kid had this morbid idea. he bunched all the little plastic soldiers together so they looked like a pile of dead soldiers. i noticed the sunlight reflected so strongly on the marble floor that the soldiers that were still standing made this dramatic, life-like silhouette. The 'dead' soldiers looked like soil and rock and ruble when they weren't in focus. but they looked really detailed and alive when they were in focus as compared to the ones that are still standing.
it was really fun to make a story out of it
