Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-02 07:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Heheh I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that we're ahead. It does mean dates can be confusing (for example the 9/11 attacks happened for us on 9/12. To be even more confusing we write our date the other way round eg 12/9)

Ooh, Chinese school? Is any of your family chinese? Or do you just learn? Ah I remember when I used to go to youth group.. we did some neat things

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-09 00:37:57 +0000 UTC]

Yush, that's true. 12/9?! That's so weird! I go year, then month, then day Wowsers, that's so odd! I guess I'm just not used to it though Well, I guess being ahead does make it that you're talking from the future to me

Mmm my entire family is Chinese I love being azn! It's so kewl But I can't do azn get up T_T

Heh heh I enjoy my Youth Group a lot, so I still go We do fun stuff and serious stuff, but it all appeals to me

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-09 09:02:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha well 12/9 was just an example of us doing dates day/month/year, we do actually say 9/11; following America's lead
That's neat that you're chinese and learning the language, I'm quite a decent amount Maori and Indian (although you couldn't tell by looking at me - I'm so white and pink ) So what actually is an azn? I've heard the word thrown around before but I'm not really sure. Is it like an asian who's grown up in an english speaking country or something

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-12 14:18:55 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. But it must be confusing for you guys sometimes, mm? Like most days you go month then day, but then for 9/11 you go day then month

Wooah! That's intense! You know 3 languages! I only know English and Canto, so it's not much to brag about Wowsers, that's pretty neat ^_^ Actually, I am sometimes surprised when white peoplez speak Chinese to me Most of them only know swears in Canto though

Well, in my school azn is just short hand of asian, but it mainly only refers to Chinese, Japanese, Phillipine, Malaysian, and Korean people. It's also the cool way to spell "asian" When we talk about fancy stuff that asians do, we say "Azn food" or "Azn get up" or "Azn Skillz" instead of using Asian. We just use it to be special and look cooler "Asian" just doesn't seem as special as "Azn" So that's why the peoplez in my school use it, but I don't know about anywhere else

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-13 09:32:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the date thing can be a bit confusing when I'm online like on dA - they do the date month/day/year
I don't actually speak Indian and Maori, (although I do know a decent amount of Maori) Those are just the people I'm decended from, if you get what I'm saying
Heheh so teach me a swear word in Canto (is that short for Cantonese?)
Oh I see about the Azn thing, I think. Although I've seen it used on the internet a bit. Well then we have heaps of Asians (or Azns) in NZ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-14 03:43:56 +0000 UTC]

They do? Well, but it's writeen in words, so you can tell But if they did it all in numbers, then it would be confusing

Ah, I see. Well, still, that's pretty kewl I'm all Chinese! Whewt!

Yeah, Canto is short for Cantonese There are a lot of dialects of Chinese And sometimes when peoplez from a certain area speak canto, it's so accented, it sounds like another dialect

Uhh I don't like teaching bad words Buut I can teach you to say "Hello" and "How are you?" ^_^ Sooo if you're talking to someone in real life, you use the English word "Hello" but you make it sound Chinesey We don't really have a word for hello when it comes to speaking in real life (but if you learn mandarin, they like using "Ni how" which literally translated means "you good" ), but if you're talking on the phone, you say "Wai?" instead of "Hello?" It's kinda confusing Aaand for "How are you?", you would say "Lay ho ma?" Mandarin peoplez say "Ni how ma?".

Really? I didn't think NZ would be a place with lots of azns! That's kewl ^_^ Yeah, Azn is used on the internet quite a lot because it's short hand for "Asain" and of course, everyone luffles using shorthand and just because it looks so kewl

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-14 04:41:32 +0000 UTC]

*fake chinese accent* Hello!
Lay ho ma?
Ok I know some Chinese words now! Only problem is I don't know how to pronounce them is it similar to pronouncing Japanese? That I can do since it's so close to Maori in pronunciation.
Yep we definitely have lots of Asians here, it's like a second Japan! (Or china or Korea or India etc. Although from the people I've met and are friends with most are Japanese) But some places have lots of Asians, while others don't have many.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-14 04:53:32 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha ha! No, it's not very similar Cantonese is a tonal language, so then you have to learn how to say it with the right high or low tone It's quite complicated If you take Mandarin, it's slightly better, but it still has enough tones to make things confusing

Ooo Maori is close to Japanese? That's so cool!

Wowsers, that's so cool! My friendsers and I call Vancouver (in B.C., Canada, in case you don't know) "Azn City" because whenever any of us visit there, there are soooo many azns

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-14 05:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Ok the tonal thing sounds like what you have to do when speaking Thai. My Dad's tried to teach me some before (He lived in Thailand for a while) and I had trouble getting the hang of it. But it's quite neat They have this saying (I can't remember what it is) That is just the same word repeated 5 times but it actually has a proper meaning since each word has a different tone to it.

Yep, the Maori vowels and consonants are pretty much exactly the same as Japanese ones to pronounce, except Japanese has a few extra letters in its alphabet.

It's funky how the cities work out like that with some having heaps of Azns () What's B.C. A province?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-15 02:58:07 +0000 UTC]

Lawlz, yeah, Canot is basically the same thing. Like, you know how English has those words that sound the same but mean different things? (ex. bow and bow; one for bow in a bow tie and one for bow which you shoot arrows with) Well, with Cantonese, even though we have different tones, one pronunciation can still mean a looot of things And then if you even vary the tone a little bit, the meaning of the word changes, and sometimes with a very bad effect

Ah, I see. That's so kewl! Actually, Japanese stole their writing system from the Chinese and then simplified some of our words I can read and understand some Japanese because of that, but can't pronounce it since their spoken language is reeaallly different from Canto

Maybe because New Zeland is kinda close to China, so lots of Azns like moving there And B.C. is one of the closest provinces we have to China, so that's why Vancouver, the biggest city in that province, is so populated with azns B.C. is a province, yuppers. Short for British Columbia

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-15 07:04:37 +0000 UTC]

It's neat how some languages are like that, maybe I should look into taking Cantonese when I get to Uni

Oh yeah, I've heard that the Japanese got their writing system from the Chinese, that's very useful then that you can understand some Japanese because of it What about Korean? Do you know if their characters are similar? I'm just well and truely lost when it comes to characters

That could be it, it's probably also because we're not overcrowded population-wise compared to some of the countries that the asians come from. Much like Canada, I imagine

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-22 05:23:14 +0000 UTC]

If you have a lot of spare time, yeah, but otherwise... My parents were looking at an online thing on Chinese cuz they were bored, and they found that Cantonese has 9 different tones for the same word thing! Like for the bow thing, there'd be 9 different ways to say it So yeeaah, if you're gonna take it, it's gonna get very complicated

Mm I've seen some Korean, and I can't recognize very much of it Yeah, characters are really confuzzling! I like the nice, simple English alphabet Just a small 26 letters to memorize, and then you're good!

Yeah, that's true; whenever I go back to Hong Kong to visit my relative there, it feels like it's waaay too crowded, because I'm used to the not-so-crowded ness in Canada. NZ isn't too crowded too? That's good Is it really hot in NZ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-22 09:15:35 +0000 UTC]

9 different tones?! It really does sound complicated :s

Haha yes, 26 letters are good Except I can never remember which comes first - J or K unless I sing the alphabet song

Na NZ's not crowded, only in our few big cities. And nope it's not very hot, only in the summer time does it get over 30 degrees C and that's a bit rare. And only in the South island does it get very cold in winter. Except when you're up mountains in the North island. There it's cold We just don't really get the extremes here. What about in Canada? I know you get some freezing weather!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-10-22 23:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, yush

I knoes! I always have to sing the song

Really? I always thought of NZ as a hot place Hmm your summers are pretty similar to mine then; depending on which city you're in though, the climate can vary quite a bit. In my city, it's very well known for it's frequently changing weather; I think the craziest weather I've ever experienced in this city was when it rained, snowed, hailed, was sunny, cloudy, and extremely windy all in one day Rather crazy, but it makes for fun climate In the winter, our temperatures are usually below -5 degress Celcius for the most part. Farenheit confuses me If you go to the states in the Eastern side of Canada, those seem to get worse weather than the western side. I know there was one Christmas day where in the newspaper, they had a photograph of this one dude jogging around in a sweatshirt and sweatpants with absolutely no snow on the ground, and then in a different province, there were pictures of cars buried in piles of snow It's amazing how different the weather can be in the same country. You're kinda lucky not to get extremes; in Canda, summers are super hot, but our winters can get to be pretty cold! You miss out on snow though since you don't have extreme weather

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Estherpester In reply to Mojofooka [2007-10-23 09:24:48 +0000 UTC]

Nope it's not hot since we're close to the South pole. Similar to how you're close to the North pole, I imagine Although some places, like Auckland seem so hot because it's really humid. Palmerston North (where I live) gets the same temps but it seems colder since it's super windy in the spring and summer times. (Gale-force winds aren't unusual)
I didn't know you guys used Celsius... Yay! Farenheit(sp?) is too illogical for me
Sounds like you get some weird weather there in your city! The weirdest weather I remember is one day the sky was completely clear and sunny above but it was raining since the wind carried it so far from the clouds
Wow that really is amazing about the differences in weather in different parts of the country
Well we get heaps of snow in NZ just not where I live since we're so close to sea level. The snow just melts and becomes rain by the time it gets to us. But at night in the winter we'll get about -5 degrees celsius, but that'll be the coldest we get I wish it would snow here. We have to drive a three or so hours to get the the ski fields at Mount Ruapehu. (Every time we go I think we're nuts to go skiing on an active volcano which erupts regularly)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mojofooka In reply to Estherpester [2007-11-03 02:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, we're not too close, but yush, closer than most other countries, yuppers. Ah, I see. Wowsers, Gale-force winds?! That's insane It's not too windy here, but yeah, the weather is very, very unpredictable And it can also be different depending on what part of town you're in. It's not uncommon to have rain on part of the city, snow on another section, and just a beautiful, sunny day on yet another part

Hooray! Yeah, Fareinheit's numbers get too big for me My brother says the guy who invented it lived in Germany, and he made the numbers according to the highest and lowest recorded temperature in his own country. That's why Farenheit (sp? I dunno how to spell it either ) doesn't really work well with my brain

Yuppers Ooo I luffles sunny rain! Cuz I like how nice rain feels, but it makes me cold if it's not sunny, so sunny rain is probably one of my favourite weather types ^_^

Indeed

Ah, I see. Aw, that's too bad for you At least you get to visit other places with snow! Zomg, you guys ski on an active volcano?! That is quite intense! I ski on nice little mountains/ski hills. Some of them are man made, and some of them are natural. The natural ones can be kinda painful to ski on But they're funner and more exciting to ski on

Only -5 at night? Wowsers, that's not bad. But I checked your location on this map at our house (Lawlz, I'm stalking you! Jk ), and I'm slightly farther away from the equator than you are, so it makes sense that my winters are slightly colder.
