Description In about a week it will be the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. One of the most intact Civil War battlefields in Arkansas, the battle is quite interesting to read about, with some colorful characters and unique and plucky regiments who fought in it.

One of the regiments was the rookie 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. They had been in the service for about three months when they were marched into Northwest Arkansas and led the U.S. attacks up the hill towards the Confederate positions around the Borden House. The banner they bore forth into battle was the company flag of F Company, which is fortunately still preserved in Iowa. The Iowans advanced up the hill and into the apple orchard owned by the Bordens, where they came under fire from three directions from Arkansans under James Fagan. Suffering heavy casualties, the 19th was eventually driven back down the hill to the prairie below. They would later go on to serve in the Vicksburg Campaign and Fort Blakely Mississippi.
