Too spooky for me. Ok, but really. This episode had a much better final act than the rest of it let on. I think some of the stuff I said in the Discord episode can apply here, but Fluttershy was played up to such a degree that it was kind of insufferable. I get that she was scared and overly cautious of everything, but to completely miss the spirit of the holiday was a buzzkill. I was kind of in Rainbow's camp for much of this episode. That said, I was amused by the others not really trying to play along. They were just confused and underwhelmed, which I felt was a more believable response.But then we get to the corn maze act, and wow did things get better. The execution was impressive, the shots and mood was on point. There were a few great references, and an overall sense of expertise. The overall ending was ok, a bit of a grinding halt from the rest of that greatness, but it made sense. If it the corn maze hadn't been there, I would have liked little and less about this episode. But it was, and it really turned the slog of the first two acts into a buildup for a solid payoff.
Alright, a few closing notes: 1) Fuck Angel. Irredeemable little shit. 2) Fluttershy's scary tea party was about social anxiety and being a disappointment to people that you care. While it failed on a spooky level, and was played as a weak attempt at being scary, that got real. 3) Rainbow with a helmet full of candy was adorable. 4) What was Pinkie's costume? I feel like it was a reference, but I can't place it.

I saw this episode when it first leaked and I didn't think much of it back then. Now that I've seen it a second time, my opinion hasn't changed much. Okay, it wasn't terrible like Tanks for the Memories and MNFBKD, but Fluttershy was completely unrealistic in it. She was a total killjoy and I couldn't take her seriously at all when she kept thinking of new and increasingly ridiculous reasons for why she wouldn't enjoy Nightmare Night. I don't think she's been this timid since season one and even in season one, she didn't act quite like she did in this episode. In Dragonshy, she had a good reason to be afraid of that huge dragon and her panic attacks were completely justified. This time, she made lame excuses to get out of fricking FUN AND GAMES! What happened to all her character development, if she ever even had any in the first place?Β I hoped we would eventually start getting Fluttershy episodes that weren't only about her being scared of something and trying to get overΒ it, but I guess not.Β Don't get me wrong, I actually like Fluttershy, but sometimes she's written very poorly, possibly even worse than Pinkie Pie or Rainbow Dash. I think I finally get why there are so few episodes with her as the main character - the writers simply can't think of anything new to do with her.
Moving on from the episode's main flaw, I quite liked everything else. Everyone's costumes looked pretty great (yes, even Derpy's) and I suppose it was cool to see Flutterbat sorta return. I just hope they won't start bringing her back every time there's a convenient excuse for her to appear, because that would get old fast. I think it's hilarious how Equestria's greatest heroes were outsmarted and scared shitless by a bunny, a spider, a few birds and a bear (well, okay, I would have ran from the bear too). Why Fluttershy named her diabolical rabbit Angel, I'll never know.
That's pretty much all I have to say about the episode. Sure, there were apparently also some references to anime and other stuff, but I didn't get any of them. My final score: 6.5/10.

Hmm ok. Yes, I chose to remove Spike for reasons of composition and time. Believe it or not, there are other things I have to get to in a day. He was, and I was going to offer that as a counter point, but he was helpful because he had the chance to be a jerk to someone else. It wasn't really him being good or altruistic.

In that sense, it was like his helpfulness in "Ponyville Confidential," where he turned away the CMCs for making Fluttershy cry. So far, his best moment has been in "Hurricane Fluttershy" as her coach of sorts. I could hardly believe it was him, in his first appearance since "Putting Your Hoof Down."
